FAQs
Do I need prior yoga experience?
Not at all. The yoga session is led by a certified instructor who tailors the flow to the group and welcomes complete beginners. If you've never done yoga before, this is a wonderful, pressure-free way to experience it — barefoot on a warm Florida beach.
Do I need prior kayaking experience?
No prior kayaking experience is needed. Participants should have upper-body mobility and the ability to paddle a kayak independently. You should also be able to lower yourself to the ground and stand back up for the yoga portion. Your guide will cover paddling basics before launching.
Do I have to participate in the yoga portion?
Participation in the yoga session is entirely optional. If you prefer not to join, you're very welcome to relax on the beach, collect shells, or simply enjoy the surroundings while the session takes place.
Is this experience suitable for a bachelorette party or group celebration?
Absolutely — this experience is a popular choice for bachelorette weekends, birthday celebrations, and wellness-focused group getaways. The combination of paddling, wildlife, and guided yoga creates a uniquely memorable and photogenic experience.
Is swimming part of the experience?
No — this experience includes kayaking and beach yoga only. Any swimming before or after the tour would be separate and at your own discretion and risk.
Who leads the yoga session?
The yoga session is led by a certified yoga instructor who is also a trained naturalist guide. The instructor blends scientific knowledge of the coastal ecosystem with a mindful, grounding approach to movement — creating a seamless flow between the paddling and yoga portions of the experience.
What are the kayak weight limits?
The weight limit is 250 lbs (113 kg) per person and no more than 425 lbs (193 kg) per boat (two paddlers combined). These limits are set by the kayak manufacturer and cannot be exceeded for safety reasons.
Are the kayaks tandem or solo?
All kayaks are tandem (two paddlers). Seats are removable, so solo paddling can be accommodated for groups with an odd number of participants — the same 250 lb (113 kg) per-person limit still applies.
Are pets allowed?
Pets are prohibited throughout Shell Key Preserve by order of Pinellas County Government. Guests traveling with a service animal should contact the team directly prior to booking.
What is the group size?
Tours are capped at 10 paddlers (5 kayaks), keeping the experience intimate and exclusive. Larger private parties may be available upon request.
What items are prohibited on tour?
Prohibited items include disposable containers (cans, plastic, glass, foam, paper), alcoholic beverages, oil-based sunscreens and lotions, tobacco products, and audio speakers.
Are waivers required?
Yes. You will receive a separate email with a link to complete your waiver (subject: 'Action required for your kayak tour'). Please sign before arriving to save time on the day of your tour.
What wildlife might I see on the water?
Shell Key Preserve is home to a remarkable variety of coastal wildlife. Year-round, you may encounter dolphins, cormorants, brown pelicans, and a range of fish and marine invertebrates. In summer, look out for manatees and the striking pink Roseate Spoonbill. Winter brings White Pelicans to the sandbars. Stingrays, crabs, and sea turtles are also spotted regularly. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but guides are trained to spot and identify as much as possible on every tour.
When is the best time to kayak at Shell Key Preserve?
Shell Key Preserve is beautiful year-round! Summer tours offer the best chance of spotting manatees and Roseate Spoonbills, while winter brings White Pelicans. Dolphins and cormorants are present throughout the year.
