Description
Ride Haleakalā & Explore Makawao by Bike!
Trade the early-morning alarm for a full day exploring one of Maui's most famous adventures. This guided Haleakalā bike tour combines an unforgettable downhill ride with time to experience Maui's charming Upcountry communities, making it as much an island sightseeing experience as it is a cycling adventure.
Your day begins with a scenic drive through Upcountry Maui as your guide shares stories about Haleakalā's volcanic history, unique ecosystems, paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) heritage, and the communities that call these mountain slopes home. After arriving at approximately 6,500 feet (1,981 m), you'll begin your descent through the famous 29 Haleakalā switchbacks, surrounded by cool mountain air, sweeping views across Central Maui, and rolling ranchlands stretching toward the Pacific Ocean.
As the ride continues, you'll pass through the agricultural community of Kula before stopping in the historic town of Makawao, where you'll have time to browse local boutiques, enjoy lunch or coffee, and soak up the atmosphere of one of Maui's most beloved Upcountry towns. The final miles carry you past pineapple fields, towering rainbow shower trees, and scenic countryside before arriving in the North Shore town of Pāʻia, completing an approximately 26-mile (42 km) journey from the slopes of Haleakalā nearly to the sea.
Although the ride is almost entirely downhill, riders will be traveling on public roads shared with vehicle traffic while descending grades averaging 5–6% through winding mountain roads. Confident bike handling and comfort using hand brakes are recommended. The combination of guided interpretation, scenic riding, and time to experience Upcountry Maui makes this much more than just a downhill bike ride—it's one of the island's classic day adventures.

FAQs
Why are there so many restrictions? Is it a safe bike tour?
We want to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone – and for years to come. We realize we have a long list of restrictions, but they are there for your own safety. Please make sure that you adhere to these restrictions so that everyone remains safe.
How do I know if the Maui Haleakala Day Bike Tour is the right tour for me?
Are you into adventure? Are you into seeing some breathtaking views? Are you checking off your bucket list? Then this Maui bike tour could be the ride of your life.
This bike tour is for those serious about fun, adventure and memory-making. But, it is also for those who know how to handle their bike. The saying, you never forget how to ride a bike, does not apply here. You need to actively ride a bike and be competent in doing so. You also need to be comfortable riding alongside motor vehicle traffic while going downhill at 15-25 miles per hour at a 5-6% gradient.
Riders must meet all restrictions, including age, height, and weight, as well as be able to have strong control in their bike handling and riding skills.
Do I need previous biking experience to join this tour?
Yes. Riders should have prior experience riding a bicycle downhill, since the ride includes an average grade of 5–6% along with switchbacks, winding roads, and stretches with no bike lane or shoulder. You'll need to feel confident controlling your bike alongside other vehicles.
Is lunch included?
Lunch itself is no-host (pay on your own) during the Makawao stop, but granola bars and bottled water are provided by your guides throughout the tour.
What do I wear for the bike tour?
You can wear anything that will make you feel comfortable. However, closed-toed shoes and helmets are the only mandatory attire. Gloves, windbreakers, and windproof pants are highly recommended. Keep in mind that the temperatures in the early morning can be quite brisk and, when combined with the downhill speeds, you may find it chilly.
Jackets, sweatshirts, jeans, leggings, long-sleeved shirts, and the like are all safe options. Dressing in layers is always a good idea.
Check the weather before your tour and dress accordingly.
