Join one of Kona's most celebrated surf schools for a group surf lesson at the beautiful Kahalu'u Beach on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Kona Mike's Surf Adventures has been teaching visitors to surf for over 18 years, and their friendly, certified instructors make every lesson safe, fun, and memorable — whether it's your first time on a board or you're looking to sharpen your skills.
Group lessons pair you with other enthusiastic surfers in a social, energetic setting. Instructors cover ocean safety, paddling technique, and the fundamentals of catching and riding waves. Small group sizes mean you still get personalized attention on the water. It's a great option for solo travelers and friends who want to experience the thrill of surfing together.
All lessons take place at Kahalu'u Beach Park, one of Kona's most iconic spots — calm, warm, and ideal for learning. All equipment is provided; just bring your swimwear, sunscreen, and a sense of adventure.
Duration
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours on the water. Check-in is at 8:00 AM for the morning session (surfing 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM) or 11:00 AM for the midday session (surfing 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM).

Do I need surfing experience?
No experience needed. Group lessons are designed for beginners and intermediate surfers alike. Instructors cover all the basics from paddling to standing up on the board.
What is the minimum age for the group lesson?
Participants must be 11 years of age or older. For younger children, the semi-private family lesson is a better fit.
How big are the groups?
This is a mixed-group setting with approximately one instructor for every 3–4 students. A minimum of 2 people is required to book; solo travelers may be added to an existing group.
What equipment is provided?
Surfboard, rash guard, and safety gear are all included. Just bring your swimwear and sunscreen.
Are instructors certified?
Yes. All Kona Mike's instructors are CPR and First Aid certified, trained in professional rescue, and Hawaii Lifeguard certified, with at least 10 years of surfing experience.
Cancellation Policy
Customers will receive a full refund with 24 hours notice of cancellation. Customers will also receive a full refund in case of operator cancellation due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Contact us by phone to cancel or inquire about a cancellation. No-shows will be charged the full price.
