MEETING PLACE AND TIME

St. George, UT This tour will begin at 7:30 AM MST at the Holiday Inn St. George Convention Center, 1808 South, Crosby Way, St. George, UT 84790. You will need to spend the night in St. George because none of the shuttle services from Las Vegas or Salt Lake run early enough. See more details in “Lodging Before Your Trip”.

ENDING TIME

We will return to St. George between 4:00-5:00 PM on the last day. You will have time to catch a shuttle back to Las Vegas, but not to Salt Lake.

Ages & Requirements

This trip is designed for teenagers (typically ages 13–17) who already have experience riding singletrack trails and are ready for a fun challenge. Riders should be comfortable on varied terrain—including dirt roads and non-technical singletrack—and able to ride 10–25 miles per day. Good physical fitness is important, as the trip takes place at elevations ranging from 7,500 to 8,900 feet. While the technical difficulty is moderate, participants should be able to ride for multiple days in a row, manage their own bikes with basic handling skills, and be excited to camp, hike, and ride in a group setting.

Itinerary

DAY 1

After our meeting in St. George, we will shuttle to the Kaibab National Forest, about three hours. Our ride begins south of Jacob Lake where we will start out with a good warm up on forest service roads. The van will meet us in a beautiful meadow along the way for lunch. After lunch we will pick up the Arizona Trail for an afternoon of fine singletrack riding. This trail covers 800 miles from the northern to southern state lines and was completed on December 16, 2011. This section winds up and down through the Ponderosa Pine forest, finally popping out right along the East Rim Viewpoint. From this point, we will get a dramatic view of the upper sedimentary rock layers of the canyon: the Kaibab and Toroweap limestones, Coconino Sandstone, Hermit Shale, the Supai Group and Redwall Limestone. These layers are exposed because of millions of years of erosion. Our camp for tonight and tomorrow night includes a natural terrace which is a great sunset viewing spot. TOTAL MILEAGE: 16 miles

DAY 2

Today we will do an out and back ride from camp on the Arizona Trail. After a short warm up on the dirt road, we pick up the fun singletrack and start pedaling through both aspens and ponderosas. There are lots of short climbs and descents in and out of beautiful meadows as we make our way north. There is a shorter option today where you can turn around at “the meadow” and a longer option where you can ride all the way to the corral. We pack a lunch today so you have the flexibility to fuel when necessary! Back at camp we relax with views of Marble Canyon far below us. John Wesley Powell, the first person to run the length of the Colorado River, named this part of the canyon for the polished rock exposed at river level which reminded him of marble. It is actually Redwall Limestone. This limestone is about 360 million years old and it was deposited when most of the continent was under marine waters. TOTAL MILEAGE: 21-28 miles

DAY 3

After packing up camp, we will shuttle into Grand Canyon National Park. We will spend the morning hiking on one of the park trails which will give us a chance to really explore the incredible sedimentary rock layers which make up the canyon walls. We will find many fossils along the way, evidence of the 250 million year old seabed. The trail follows the rim with expansive views of the canyon. Next we will visit the historic Grand Canyon Lodge. The lodge is one of two remaining historic lodges from the Grand Circle tourist route of the 1930s. Constructed from giant timbers, the porch suspends visitors over the walls of the canyon. We will shuttle back to the Kaibab Forest and ride a series of aspen lined dirt roads to our camp at Locust or Fence Point. This evening’s views are classic Grand Canyon and give us a great look at its vast complexity. Below us lies almost two billion years of geology, from the younger Permian layers to the metamorphic and igneous basement rocks that comprise the Inner Gorge of the Grand Canyon. These are some of the oldest rocks exposed in the world. TOTAL MILEAGE: 8 miles riding, 1.5 miles hiking

DAY 4

The singletrack we ride today, the Rainbow Rim Trail, is one of the highlights of our trip. It was designed and flagged by Ranger John Kneeling of the North Kaibab Ranger District. It took him three months to flag out the route and he made sure the trail never rose or fell by more than nine degrees. This means that the climbs are all very ridable and the descents are some of the most fun on any trip we do. The trail is 18 miles in length and we are camped at about the middle. Today we ride it as an out and back to the north, planning to have lunch at the northern most point, called Parissawampitts. We will pack a lunch and enjoy it trailside studying the amazing strata of the canyon. Of course you have the option for a shorter day and can turn around at any time. No matter what, we know you will love riding the Rainbow Rim Trail. TOTAL MILEAGE: 23 miles, shorter or longer options available

DAY 5

Today we will ride more of the Rainbow Rim Trail, through the Ponderosa Pines to the south. This part of the trail is fast and smooth and still continues to wow with stunning views of the canyon. There are a few good climbs to wear out your legs on the last day, and an equal amount of swooping downhill to bring out a giggle or two. After our ride we will have a final lunch near the rim and load up for the shuttle back to St. George. TOTAL MILEAGE: 9 miles

Packing List

Be sure to bring everything on this list. We have carefully developed this list to ensure your comfort on the tour regardless of the weather. If you are prepared for extreme weather, it is an adventure. If you are not prepared it can be a serious problem. We recommend the layering system, including a wicking or long underwear layer, an insulating layer and a weather barrier for wind and rain. This list reflects that philosophy. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable so be sure to bring all the warm clothing and rain gear listed!

HOW TO PACK: The bulk of your gear and clothing will ride in the Western Spirit support vehicle (preferably in a large duffle bag) and will not be accessible during the day.

For this trip, you will need a riding pack and optional day bag:

  •  Your riding pack may be a hydration pack, but needs to carry 2-3 liters of water, rain gear, other warm clothing, and food for the day. You may be away from camp and the support vehicle all day and need to be self-sufficient.
  • A small day bag is optional and may be used to store things you’d rather not ride with, but would like to have access to during the day. This day-pack will remain with the support vehicle and may not be accessible, depending on the day.

What's included in the trip price?

The trip price includes food and drinks for the trip, guides, support vehicle, campsites, permits, and any entry fees into national parks and public lands.

Not included are: rental fees (bikes and camping gear), alcoholic beverages, gratuities for your guides, and applicable sales tax. If you would like to bring alcoholic beverages we will store them for you at the appropriate temperature.

Your total tour cost will include your trip fee, appropriate rental fees and applicable sales tax

Are drinks included?

We provide water, coffee, teas, electrolyte drinks, and assorted soft drinks. We cannot provide alcohol. You are welcome to bring your favorite alcoholic beverages and our guides will store them at the appropriate temperature. We’ll keep the beer cold while you’re out riding!

Is food included?

Yes! From lunch on the first day to lunch on the last day, we’ve got healthy and delicious food to fuel your fun. Food is one thing we take pretty seriously and we get rave reviews from our guests.

Our guides are amazing backcountry chefs and will prepare all your meals. All snacks are included. We’re sponsored by Clif Bar, and provide you with plentiful bars, snacks and electrolyte drinks. If you have specific favorite riding snacks, however, please bring them with you.

Can you accommodate my dietary restrictions?

Yes, no problem! We are happy to accommodate dietary restrictions, and we do it frequently. Our guides are masters at making sure everyone is satisfied. Please let us know when you fill out your forms so our guides can accommodate you and your needs. It is good to be specific (e.g., vegetarian but prefer tempeh over tofu) to help the guides with meal planning.

What will the weather be like?

We wish we could tell you exactly, but Mother Nature is quite unpredictable as you may know. Our trips are designed with the best weather in mind, and follow the seasons—desert trips in spring and fall, and mountain trips in the summer. By sticking to our packing list that we’ve designed for you, you’ll be prepared for whatever comes our way (bringing rain gear almost assures it won’t rain, right?).

How many people are on a trip?

Most of our permits allow us to take 13 guests and 2 guides, although many trips are smaller than our maximum allowed. Our Maze permit in Canyonlands National Park is more limited with only 7 guests and 2 guides to maintain the remote wilderness experience.

What type of bikes do you rent? What do I need to know about renting bikes?

For mountain bikes, we use the Specialized Stumpjumper ST 29ers. For road bikes, we use the Specialized Diverge E5 Elite. All our rental bikes come with flat pedals, a helmet, and one water bottle cage. We provide the water bottle and all the bike repair gear.

If you’re renting a bike from us, you do not need to show up early. Please meet at the scheduled time and we will fit you to your rented bike then.

What pedals come on your rental bikes?

All Western Spirit rental bikes come with flat pedals. If you have clipless pedals (e.g., SPD, Crank Brothers, etc.), you’re welcome to bring them along with your shoes. We swap out pedals all the time!

How should I pack my things?

The packing list will tell you how to pack, since it depends on which trip you are on. Overall, we use a 3-bag system:

Camping gear and personal items for camp (gets packed away in the morning and is inaccessible throughout the day), Small daypack (stays in vehicle and is accessible throughout the day, e.g., extra layers, prescription medications, extra snacks, etc.), Hydration pack you wear (all things you readily need, right there on your back). We recommend a 2-liter hydration system (e.g., Camelbak) to carry the things needed during the day (water, snacks, lunch, rain gear, extra layer, sunscreen, camera, etc.), and to easily hydrate without stopping.

Do I need to bring bike repair gear?

Nope! We provide spare tubes (for 26”, 27.5” and 29” wheels), lube, tool kits, and pumps.

Can I bring my own bike and camping gear?

Certainly! If you bring camping gear, please bring a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. We’ll provide everything else you need. Don’t worry about the camp chairs—we bring those too!

Please make sure all your gear is in excellent, working condition before you head out on your trip. If you’re bringing your own bike, please make sure it has been tuned up and is in excellent riding condition before the trip.

Do you rent camping gear?

Yes! We rent tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads. Sleeping bags are thoroughly washed between trips. The following prices are for the whole trip:

2-person tent – $40 Sleeping bag – $35 Sleeping pad – $15 Total $90

Will I be able to take a shower?

We offer solar showers which are a nice way to rinse off and refresh yourself, but it is not enough water to take a full-fledge shower. The showers are not private, so please bring a swimsuit and your own towel. Showers are dependent on water resources, which may be restricted if it’s a hot desert trip. Some campsites have streams and lakes available for swimming. We also recommend wet-wipes to refresh after a fun day on the bike.

When I'm camping, where will I go to the bathroom?

It’s not a glamorous topic, and we know this can be a subject of concern and embarrassment for some. We make it as easy and sanitary as possible! If we’re camping in designated campsites, we use the pit toilets available in the campgrounds. If we’re camping in the backcountry, we obey by the pack-it-in-pack-it-out rule. We set up a portable toilet lovingly called “the groover,” and put it in a private location with a stunning view. We provide a hand wash system for clean up.

What if I'm traveling by myself?

Please join us! We get solo travelers all the time and going on a bike trip is a great way to meet like-minded people. Many of our guests end up as lifelong friends after a Western Spirit trip.
