Description
Guided Bike Tour of Golden Gate Park
Golden Gate Park is one of the great urban parks in the world — 1,017 acres (411 hectares) of gardens, trails, meadows, museums, and hidden history running from the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It's also easy to spend hours there and still miss most of it. This guided bike tour fixes that.
The route starts in the Haight-Ashbury district, the epicenter of the 1960s counterculture movement — birthplace of the Summer of Love, home to the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin — before heading into the park itself. Inside, you'll weave through the Victorian glass Conservatory of Flowers, the fragrant Rose Garden, the Shakespeare Garden, and the AIDS Memorial Grove. The route then opens up past the California Academy of Sciences and the de Young Museum — two world-class institutions sitting side by side — before reaching Ocean Beach, where the park spills out onto the sand dunes and the city's oceanfront bike path stretches out with surfers dotting the waves below the Great Highway. On the return leg, you'll pass the Bison Paddock (yes, there's a real herd of bison in the park), Spreckels Lake, and the Sutro Overlook with glimpses of Lands End and the historic Cliff House.
Guides bring the park's layered history — natural, cultural, and a little bit haunted — to life throughout. At just 6 miles (9.7 km), this is a leisurely, detail-rich ride rather than a workout.
Both standard and electric (pedal-assist) bikes are available. The park is mostly flat, making this one of the more accessible rides in the lineup — great for families and less experienced riders.

FAQs
Where will the tour go and what will I see?
The tour starts in Haight-Ashbury and heads into Golden Gate Park, covering the Conservatory of Flowers, the Shakespeare Garden, Rose Garden, and AIDS Memorial Grove, then past the California Academy of Sciences and the de Young Museum. From there you'll ride out to Ocean Beach for sweeping Pacific views and surfer-dotted waves before looping back through the Bison Paddock, Spreckels Lake, and the Sutro Overlook. The tour ends back at the Haight-Ashbury starting point.
How far is the tour and is it difficult?
The guided route is 6 miles (9.7 km). Golden Gate Park is largely flat with gentle paths, making this one of the most accessible rides in the lineup and an excellent option for families, less experienced riders, or anyone who prefers a more leisurely pace.
Does this tour go to the Golden Gate Bridge?
The Golden Gate Bridge is not in Golden Gate Park — it's a cross-town ride along the coast. However, with your bonus all-day rental after the tour, you can absolutely ride there on your own. Your guide can recommend the best route from the park to the bridge.
Do I need prior biking experience?
Guests should be comfortable riding a bike independently. The park terrain is gentle and forgiving, making this tour a great choice for first-time riders or anyone returning to cycling after a long break.
Will the tour run in the rain?
Yes — tours operate rain or shine unless there are dangerous weather conditions. San Francisco's famously moody weather rarely reaches the point of cancellation; if it does, you will be notified up to 30 minutes before departure. Ponchos are available for purchase at the shop if needed.
