Description

Gold Creek Sea Kayak Day Tour

Explore Gold Creek State Park—one of Valdez’s hidden gems, on this full-day coastal paddling and hiking adventure. This tour combines the best of Alaska’s marine and forest environments, offering a scenic sea kayak journey, a peaceful picnic, and a guided hike through a spectacular coastal rainforest.
Your day begins with gearing up and on-land instruction from your expert guides. Once you're comfortable in your sea kayak, we’ll launch from the Valdez small boat harbor and paddle along the coastline, weaving past rocky outcrops, lush greenery, and secluded beaches. Along the way, keep watch for harbor seals, sea lions, and playful sea otters—commonly sighted in this area. You may even spot bald eagles perched along the shoreline or soaring overhead.
Upon reaching Gold Creek, we’ll land on a quiet beach to enjoy a well-earned picnic lunch with stunning views of Prince William Sound. Then, we’ll swap paddles for hiking shoes and venture into the coastal rainforest. This hour-long hike follows a lush trail beneath towering Sitka spruce and hemlock trees, winding past vibrant mosses and ferns. We’ll stop at cascading waterfalls and spawning streams—perfect spots for photos and a chance to witness jumping salmon during the season. Black bears are occasionally spotted in this area, so bring your sense of adventure!
After exploring the forest and soaking in the tranquility of this wild Alaskan setting, we’ll return to the beach and paddle back to Valdez, retracing our scenic route along the coast. This tour is ideal for active adventurers and families seeking a diverse and immersive Alaska day trip that blends marine wildlife viewing, coastal paddling, and forest hiking into one unforgettable experience.

How much time do we spend kayaking?

The time spent paddling can vary depending on how much wildlife we encounter and slow down while on board the water taxi.

Do I need previous experience?

No prior experience is necessary, but this tour is moderately active. Participants should be comfortable paddling for a couple of hours and hiking for about an hour. The terrain may be uneven or muddy in places.

What kind of kayaks will we use?

We use stable, double (tandem) sea kayaks for this trip. These are ideal for long distances, variable conditions, and accommodating paddlers of all experience levels.

What kind of wildlife might I see?

Common sightings include sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, bald eagles, and various seabirds. During the hike, we may also see salmon in the streams and—on rare occasions—black bears in the area.

What if the weather is bad?

Tours operate rain or shine, and Alaska’s coastal weather can be unpredictable. Your guides will assess conditions for safety and adjust the itinerary if needed. In rare cases of severe weather, the trip may be rescheduled or refunded.
