Guided Going-to-the-Sun Road Educational Day Tour in Glacier National Park

Experience Glacier National Park’s iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road like never before on this full-day educational tour. This guided program is more than a scenic drive—it’s a journey through time, geology, and ecology, connecting visitors to the park’s landscapes, wildlife, and human history. Traveling from the west side to the east side of the park and back, participants will explore how glaciers carved valleys, how fire and water continually shape the land, and how human engineering intersects with natural systems.
The tour includes short hop-on/hop-off mini excursions, allowing you to stretch your legs on light walks, take photos, and engage with the park’s stories at key viewpoints. Your Glacier Institute guide provides interactive interpretation, highlighting the interconnectedness of geology, climate, ecosystems, and human history along this living timeline.

FAQs

Can I order lunch in advance?

Yes. Guests have the option to add a trail lunch at checkout for themselves and/or their group. Lunch options include turkey pesto, deli beef, caprese, and vegan falafel selections, with gluten-free options available. Trail lunches are designed to be easy to carry and enjoy on the trail during your hike.

What does the difficulty rating mean?

We rate Hiking Difficulty from Easy to Strenuous, with the below types of hikes.

Easy. A leisurely walk totaling no more than 3 miles throughout the day. Minimal elevation change, less than 1000 feet.

Moderate. A hike on consistent trail conditions with no more than 8 miles throughout the day. Total elevation change, less than 2,000 feet.

Strenuous. A hike on variable trail conditions totaling more than 8 miles throughout the day. Total elevation change, greater than 2,000 feet.

Is a park entrance pass required?

Yes. Each participant must have a Glacier National Park vehicle pass, which should be purchased in advance at recreation.gov.

Is this an interpretive educational tour?

Absolutely. Your guide provides interpretation on the geology and ecology of the landscape.

Primary Educational Theme:  Everything Is Connected — Change Is the Only Constant This program uses Going-to-the-Sun Road as a living timeline to explore how geology, water, life, climate, and people are deeply interconnected. From ancient microscopic life to massive glaciers, from fire to wind to human engineering, educators will experience how landscapes are always changing and how every place along the road holds layered stories of time, resilience, and connection

What happens if the minimum number of participants isn’t met?

A minimum of 3 participants is required for the program. If the number isn’t met, guests are notified in advance and offered an alternative date or a full refund.

Will I get to walk or hike during the tour?

Minimal walking is involved—less than a mile total—but there are short, easy mini excursions at viewpoints to stretch, explore, and photograph the park’s geology, wildlife, and ecosystems. This makes the tour accessible for non-hikers, families with young children, and visitors with mobility considerations.

What unique sights will I see along the road?

The tour highlights glacially carved valleys, alpine lakes, fire-affected forests, and high mountain peaks. Stops include overlooks, historic points of interest, and interpretive stops to observe how water, ice, and fire continually shape the landscape. You may also spot wildlife like mountain goats, marmots, or eagles in their natural habitats.

Will I have opportunities for photography or wildlife viewing?

Absolutely. Short excursions at scenic overlooks allow for photo opportunities, observation, and field note-taking. Guides can help identify plants, animals, and geological features to make your photos and observations more meaningful.

The Glacier Institute will give a full refund if the cancelation is 7 days prior to the program. Customers can cancel bookings online.
