Description

2-hour Guided Full Moon & Sunset Kayak Tours on Lake Pleasant, Arizona

There's no better seat in the house for an Arizona sunset than from the water. This guided evening kayak tour on Lake Pleasant departs as the desert sky begins its nightly show — layers of purple, pink, orange, and red igniting across the Bradshaw Mountains — and ends with the soft glow of moonlight rippling across 10,000 acres (4,047 hectares) of open water.
The tour launches from Pleasant Harbor Marina and paddles at a relaxed, unhurried pace to a quiet nearby cove — no experience required and no racing to keep up. This is an intentionally laid-back evening on the water: bring your own beverages and snacks, grab a glow stick if you're feeling festive, and settle in for one of the most memorable things to do near Phoenix. Solar lanterns are provided to keep your kayak illuminated as daylight fades.
A minimum of two guides leads every tour, and brief paddle instruction is given before departure for anyone who needs it. The tour wraps back at the marina after the sun has fully set and the moon has risen — and if you're visiting on a Friday or Saturday, live music at Dillon's Bayou Restaurant and Bar at the marina makes for a perfect way to cap off the night.
Tours run seasonally on select dates tied to the sunset and full moon calendar. Reservations are required — these sell out. Check the current schedule and book online to secure your spot.

FAQs

Do I need experience to join a Lake Pleasant kayaking tour?

No prior paddling experience is needed. The tour departs at a leisurely pace suitable for all levels, and brief paddle instruction is given to everyone before you launch. Your guides will be with you throughout and will make sure you feel comfortable on the water.

What's the difference between a sunset tour and a full moon tour?

Both tours follow the same format — a relaxed guided paddle to a nearby cove and back — but the timing and atmosphere differ. Sunset tours depart in time to watch the sun sink behind the Bradshaw Mountains, with the sky at its most colorful. Full moon tours are timed around the full moon calendar and run later into the evening, so you experience both the last light of sunset and the rising of the full moon over the lake. Both are unforgettable; the full moon tours tend to feel a bit more magical and otherworldly once you're out on the dark water.

Is a headlamp or flashlight really required?

Yes — a headlamp or flashlight is mandatory for participation, no exceptions. As the sun sets and the tour continues after dark, personal lighting ensures your safety and visibility on the water. Solar lanterns are provided for your kayak, but you must bring your own personal light source.

Can I bring drinks or snacks on the tour?

Yes! You're welcome and encouraged to bring your own beverages and snacks to enjoy on the water. The tour has a relaxed, social atmosphere, so settle in and enjoy yourself.

How far do we paddle? What cove do we go to?

The tour departs from Pleasant Harbor Marina and paddles to a nearby quiet cove at a leisurely pace. The exact route may vary slightly by date and conditions. The focus is on the experience — the sunset, the scenery, the wildlife — rather than covering distance.

What wildlife might I see on an evening paddle?

Evening is one of the best times for wildlife at Lake Pleasant. As the temperature drops, great blue herons, ospreys, and other birds become more active along the shoreline. In winter months, the lake hosts one of Arizona's largest bald eagle populations, and sightings around dusk are not uncommon. Along the desert shore, you may also spot wild burros, deer, javelina, and coyotes coming down to drink as night falls.

What should I wear? Will it be cold on the water at night?

Desert temperatures drop noticeably after sunset, especially on the water. Even in summer, evenings can be breezy and cool compared to the daytime heat. Bring a light jacket, fleece, or extra layer — you can always take it off if you're warm, but you'll be grateful to have it once the sun goes down. Quick-dry clothing is recommended. Closed-toe water shoes or sandals with straps are ideal footwear.

Is there anything to do after the tour?

Yes! On Friday and Saturday evenings, Dillon's Bayou Restaurant and Bar at Pleasant Harbor Marina features live music — it's a great way to extend the evening after your paddle. The restaurant and bar are located right next door to the marina.

Can I bring a camera?

Absolutely — and we'd strongly recommend it. Arizona sunsets are legendary, and the views from the water are unobstructed in every direction. A waterproof case or bag for your phone is a good idea in case of water splashes. Note that the staff are not responsible for lost or damaged items.
