Description

Full Moon Kayak Tour | Broad Creek Wildlife Area

Explore the Lowcountry waters by the light of the moon! Tidal creeks come alive with the sounds of the nocturnal animals that inhabit the salt marsh on this one of a kind kayak excursion. See Hilton Head’s natural waterways from a perspective that few get to experience – by the light of the full moon!

Available March through December, this full moon kayak paddle is a 2 hour kayak tour led by an interpretive naturalist guide, who is also a kayak expert. They will meet you at the start of your trip, and after getting to know the group, the fun begins! First, your guide will lead you through a brief paddling clinic to make sure everyone is on the same page as to how to hold the paddle, execute effective strokes, sit in the boat and stay safe and comfortable. Then, your guide will help you to launch into the water from our state-of-the-art kayak launch. You can choose either single or double kayaks – all of which are comfortable, safe, clean and in good working condition. Once the whole group is launched, you will head out into the Broad Creek Wildlife Area.

As you paddle out, you will see the spectacular sunset over the water to the west as the majestic moon rises to the east. Your guide will interpret the wind and the tides, and lead you to different stops, looking for wildlife, while explaining the natural, historical and cultural significance of what you are seeing. In addition, your guide will discuss the significance of the full moon in our area, it’s effect on the tides, and the subsequent historical importance. When the sun has completely set, the strong glow of the moon will illuminate the creeks and inlets of the striking marsh, devoid of the influence of man made light. The light is so strong, you will see your own shadow on the water! At the close of your trip, your guide will help you to land and recover back at the marina. This Full Moon Kayak Paddle is an experience not to be missed for locals and visitors alike. These popular trips fill up quickly, so be sure to book early!

FAQs

What if the weather is bad?

If the weather will make a program unsafe or not enjoyable (heavy rain or very high winds) we may decide not to go. The weather in the South Carolina Lowcountry changes often. We usually make decisions about possible inclement weather one hour prior to the scheduled departure time.

Do I need experience to go on a two-hour guided kayak tour?

Kayaking in the South Carolina Lowcountry is just like a relaxing nature “hike” on the water. The kayaks are big, stable, and safe. No experience is necessary to enjoy this two-hour guided kayak tours. We begin all of our Hilton Head kayak tours with a paddling clinic before heading out on the water.

Do you offer single or double kayaks?

We offer single and double kayaks for you to use. Both options are very stable.

Will I seee dolphins?

The dolphins in our area are wild, and their behavior is often unpredictable. While we are fortunate to have a large, year-round population of dolphins on Hilton Head, we are unable to guarantee that they will be seen on absolutely every trip. However, it is a rare exception that we do not see them.

What is the best time of day to look for dolphins?

Wild Atlantic bottlenose dolphin are active in our local waters throughout the day, regardless of time or tide.

How far in advance do I need to make a reservation?

The maximum group size is 12 guests. We recommend reserving as soon as you are certain of the dates you are interested in to guarantee availability for your preferred date and time.

Cancellation Policy

Reservations may be cancelled up to 48 hours before departure for a full refund. If the weather will make a program unsafe or not enjoyable, our team will make the decision about one hour prior to the scheduled departure time. Reservations that are cancelled due to weather will be offered to reschedule or a full refund.
