Description

Full-Day Rocky Mountain National Park Guided Hike with Picnic Lunch

A full day in Rocky Mountain National Park means time to really wander — through alpine forest, past mountain streams, and into landscapes that reward the extra effort to reach them.

Midway through the day, settle in for a picnic lunch surrounded by the park's scenery before continuing on. Your guide threads together the best of the park's trails, sharing stories about its wildlife, geology, and history the whole way, and keeping an eye out for elk, moose, marmots, and other wildlife along the route.

This is the longest of the group hikes, built for guests who want to see as much of the park as possible in a single outing and don't mind putting in the miles to get there.

Duration

  1. On-trail time: 5–6 hours
  2. Distance: 4 to 7 miles (6.4 to 11.3 km)

Location / Where to Meet

  1. Meet at the Estes Park Mountain Shop, 2050 Big Thompson Ave, Estes Park, CO 80517
  2. From the meeting point, guests caravan in their own vehicles to the trailhead your guide selects for the day
  3. Trailhead location varies by hike and conditions, so exact drive time from the shop is not fixed

Ages & Requirements

  1. Minimum age: 8+
  2. Terrain: Natural, unpaved trail through varied alpine landscapes — grade and footing vary by the trailhead selected
  3. Fitness: Covers up to 7 miles (11.3 km) over 5–6 hours at elevations above 7,500 ft (2,286 m); this is the longest of the group hikes and requires comfort with a full day of sustained walking at altitude
  4. Group minimum: A 2-person minimum is required for this tour to run

What's Included

  1. Timed entry & national park entrance fee
  2. CPR/First Aid-certified hiking guide
  3. Water
  4. Picnic lunch (dietary needs accommodated — share them when you book)
  5. Scenic hike ranging from 4–7 miles (6.4–11.3 km)

Not Included

  1. Transportation to and from the trailhead — guests provide their own vehicle for the caravan from the meeting point
  2. Gratuity — never expected, but always appreciated for a great experience

What to Bring / Wear

  1. Comfortable, broken-in hiking or walking shoes
  2. Layered clothing, since temperatures shift quickly at elevation
  3. Hat and sunscreen
  4. Backpack with water, your phone, and any personal medications
  5. Light, hooded rain jacket
  6. Walking poles, if you use them
  7. Winter/spring only: crampons or another traction device are strongly recommended

FAQs

What are the benefits of a guided hike in the park?

Guided hikes take the guesswork out of planning a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park. Your CPR/First Aid-certified guide handles park permits, timed-entry reservations, trail selection, and safety, so you can simply enjoy the scenery. Guides also share local knowledge of the park's wildlife, geology, and history along the way, and hikes are kept to small group sizes so the pace and focus can be tailored to your group.

Do I need to make my own Rocky Mountain National Park reservations?

No. Park entrance fees and timed-entry reservations are handled for you as part of the tour package.

I have a Rocky Mountain National Park pass. Should I bring it?

Yes. If you hold an annual, senior, or lifetime park pass, bring it along — your guide will use it when possible to help support the National Park Service.

Will there be snow on the trails?

Snow is possible on higher-elevation trails until early June. If you're hiking in winter or spring, plan to bring traction devices if you have them, along with a bag to carry out muddy or snowy boots afterward.

Do hikes still run in the rain?

Yes — hikes run rain or shine, and your guide will choose the best trail for the day's conditions. In rare cases of dangerous weather, a hike may be canceled for safety, and you'll be notified and offered the option to reschedule.

How long is the Full Day Hike, and how far do we go?

This hike covers 4 to 7 miles (6.4 to 11.3 km) of trail over roughly 5 to 6 hours, depending on the trailhead your guide selects for the day.

Is lunch included?

Yes — a picnic lunch inside the park is included midway through the hike. Let your guide know about any dietary needs when you book.

Is there a minimum number of guests for this tour to run?

Yes, a 2-person minimum is required for this group tour to run.

Is this hike suitable for beginners?

This is the longest of the group hikes, covering more distance and time at elevation than the Half Day or Hiking Light options — it's best suited for guests comfortable spending a full day on the trail.
