Description
Full Day Across Resurrection Bay – Guided Sea Kayaking in Resurrection Bay
After a 20–30 minute water taxi crossing, your guide leads the group through approximately 5 miles (8 km) of paddling across the east side of the bay — from Fox Island to Thumb Cove, or Thumb Cove to Fox Island, depending on conditions, tides, and wind. The route is planned so you're paddling with the wind wherever possible, keeping the day comfortable and enjoyable for all ability levels.
- Humpy Cove sits near the mouth of Resurrection Bay, sheltered beneath dramatic sheer cliffs that erupt with waterfalls after rain. The water here is crystal-clear, the rock gardens rich with sea urchins, sea stars, and migrating sea jellies. In fall, salmon fill the cove's stream as bald eagles gather in the trees above.
- Fox Island is one of three barrier islands in Resurrection Bay — a beautiful, diverse destination with temperate rainforest, sea stacks, pebbled beaches, and a fascinating history your guide can bring to life. Watch for sea otters drifting in the kelp, oystercatchers working the rocky shoreline, and sea lions hauled out nearby.
- Thumb Cove is sheltered and calm, tucked beneath three breathtaking alpine glaciers. Bald eagles perch in the tall Sitka spruce above, sea otters float nearby, and the cove's tranquility makes it one of the most peaceful paddling destinations in the area. If time permits, the guide may lead a short hike to a hidden waterfall in Thumb or out to a lagoon at Fox Island while you wait for the water taxi pickup.
The water taxi ride back keeps the wildlife experience going — watch for humpback whales, Dall's porpoises, sea otters, and Steller sea lions on the crossing back to Lowell Point.

FAQs
What route will we paddle — Fox Island to Thumb Cove, or the reverse?
Your guide selects the route on the day based on weather, tides, wind, and wildlife conditions. The trip is always planned so you're paddling with the wind where possible, making both directions comfortable and enjoyable. Either way, you'll visit the same stunning destinations — Humpy Cove, Fox Island, and Thumb Cove — across the full day.
How far will we paddle?
Expect approximately 5 miles (8 km) of paddling across the east side of Resurrection Bay, moving between destinations at a comfortable, guided pace with breaks along the way. Time permitting, the guide may lead a short optional hike to a hidden waterfall in Thumb Cove or out to a lagoon at Fox Island while waiting for the water taxi pickup.
How long is the water taxi ride?
The water taxi crossing takes approximately 20–30 minutes each way, depending on conditions and any stops to drop off or pick up other groups along the route. Keep your eyes open — wildlife sightings on the crossing are common.
What wildlife can I expect to see?
Resurrection Bay's east side is one of the richest wildlife areas in the region. Sea otters, harbor seals, Steller sea lions, Dall's porpoises, bald eagles, and various coastal seabirds are all regularly spotted. In Humpy Cove, look for sea urchins, sea stars, and sea jellies in the crystal-clear water. In season, spawning salmon fill the streams. Humpback whales and orca are occasionally seen on the water taxi crossings.
Is food provided on this trip?
Meals are not included but can be added at checkout. The on-site café is open before and after your trip. Please bring your own lunch and snacks, or purchase a meal package when booking.
Is this trip suitable for beginners?
This trip is rated moderate — it involves approximately 5 miles (8 km) of paddling across a full afternoon, which is more than the shorter half-day tours but less demanding than the full fjord day trips. A pre-trip orientation is provided before every departure. If you're newer to kayaking and want something shorter, the Humpy Cove Paddle or Bridal Veil and Tonsina Point Paddle are great starting points.
Can I do a short hike during the trip?
Possibly — if time permits at Thumb Cove or Fox Island, your guide may lead a short optional hike to a hidden waterfall or lagoon while the group waits for the water taxi pickup. This is guide-dependent and not guaranteed, but it's a wonderful bonus when conditions allow.
