Premium E-Bike Full Day Rental — Explore the NCR Trail, Monkton, Maryland

The shop sits at Monkton Station — a landmark rest stop at Mile 7.2 of the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail, better known as the NCR Trail — and you're on one of the Mid-Atlantic's most celebrated rail trails the moment you roll out the door. The trail follows the former Northern Central Railway through 19.7 miles (31.7 km) of northern Baltimore County, running alongside Gunpowder Falls through a continuous canopy of hardwood forest, past historic mill communities, through a beloved gnome village tucked into the trailside trees, and all the way to the Pennsylvania state line — where it connects seamlessly with the York County Heritage Trail for another 20+ miles (32+ km) north toward York, PA.

This is the trail President Lincoln traveled on his way to deliver the Gettysburg Address in 1863, and where his funeral train passed south the following year. Today it's one of the most scenic and peaceful multi-use trails on the East Coast — and an electric bike from Monkton Station is the finest way to experience it.

Choose from three bike styles at checkout — a comfort cruiser in small or medium/large, or a mountain-style fat tire bike — and select the one best suited to your height and riding preference. Staff will have you fitted and on the trail quickly.

FAQs

Which bike style should I choose — Comfort or Mountain?

Both bikes are well-suited to the NCR Trail's crushed limestone surface. The Comfort E-Bike has a step-thru frame, an upright riding position, and a wide padded saddle — ideal for a relaxed, leisurely ride at any pace. Choose the small (4'11"–5'4") or medium/large (5'4"–6'2") based on your height. The Mountain Style E-Bike has fat tires and a more active geometry, giving more grip and stability on the limestone surface — especially on the narrower sections and where the trail is damp after rain. It's the better choice for riders who want a more planted, confident feel, or who plan to ride aggressively. Both are suitable for all skill levels on this trail.

Where can I ride on a full day rental?

The shop is at Mile 7.2 of the NCR Trail, giving you two excellent directions:

North toward Pennsylvania (12 miles / 19 km to the state line): Head north through Monkton's wooded corridor, past the beloved gnome village tucked into the trailside trees near White Hall (~5 miles / 8 km), through the historic communities of Bentley Springs (~8 miles / 13 km) and Freeland (~12 miles / 19 km), and across the Mason-Dixon Line into Pennsylvania. The York County Heritage Trail continues north from there for another 20+ miles (32+ km) to New Freedom, PA, and ultimately York, PA. A popular full-day ride is north to New Freedom, PA (~15 miles / 24 km from the shop) for a total round trip of about 30 miles (48 km).

South toward Cockeysville (7 miles / 11 km): Head south through Phoenix and Sparks to the Ashland trailhead in Cockeysville — a 14-mile (23 km) round trip through beautiful wooded sections with the Gunpowder Falls visible at multiple points.

A full day from the shop comfortably covers 25–35 miles (40–56 km) at a relaxed e-bike pace with stops.

What is the gnome village?

The gnome village is an unofficial but beloved landmark on the NCR Trail — a collection of small gnome and fairy-tale figurines placed among the roots and rocks along the trailside trees, maintained by trail regulars over many years. It's located approximately 5 miles (8 km) north of Monkton near White Hall. Look carefully as you ride through — it's easy to miss if you're moving fast.

Can I continue into Pennsylvania?

Yes — the NCR Trail connects directly at the Maryland state line to the York County Heritage Trail, which continues north approximately 20 miles (32 km) to New Freedom, PA, and then on to York, PA. The surface and character are similar to the Maryland section. Riders who continue into Pennsylvania should be mindful of return time — all bikes must be back at the shop by 4:00 PM.

What wildlife can I see on the trail?

The NCR Trail runs alongside Gunpowder Falls through a mature hardwood forest — excellent habitat for a wide range of wildlife. Riders regularly spot white-tailed deer, red foxes, Great Blue Herons fishing in the stream, kingfishers, and a variety of woodland birds. The stream provides access for fishing as well.

Is there anywhere to eat along the trail?

The Monkton Hotel café and general store are right next to the shop at the start of your ride — a great option for coffee and a bite before heading out. There are additional food and drink options in the White Hall and Bentley Springs communities further north, and in New Freedom, PA, for riders who cross the state line.

Are restrooms available on the trail?

Yes — portable restrooms are located at Monkton (next to the shop), Sparks, White Hall, Bentley Springs, and Freeland along the trail. Permanent facilities are available at the Monkton Hotel and in New Freedom, PA.

What is a Pedego electric bike and how does it work?

Pedego electric bikes use a pedal-assist system — as you pedal, the motor kicks in to amplify your effort. You can dial the assist level up or down depending on how much help you want. On the NCR Trail's gentle grades and crushed limestone surface, the pedal-assist makes the riding effortless — you can cover the full length of the trail in Maryland and into Pennsylvania without any significant effort, and still feel like you actually went on a ride.

How far can I go on a single charge?

Most Pedego bikes are rated for 20–60 miles (32–97 km) per charge. The NCR Trail in Maryland runs 19.7 miles (31.7 km) one way from the shop to the Pennsylvania state line — a 39-mile (63 km) round trip that sits well within range on a single charge. Riders who continue into Pennsylvania on the York County Heritage Trail can push another 20+ miles (32+ km) north toward York, PA.

Do I need experience riding a bicycle to rent an e-bike?

You must be able to ride a bicycle independently before renting. Staff will walk you through the controls and get you comfortable before you head out onto the trail.

Are helmets required?

Maryland state law requires riders under 16 to wear a helmet on e-bikes. Helmets are strongly recommended for all riders and are available at the shop.

Do I need to be physically fit?

The NCR Trail follows a former railroad bed and is gently graded throughout — easy to moderate riding with no significant climbs. The pedal-assist makes the experience accessible to all fitness levels. Reviewers of all ages consistently describe the trail as effortless on e-bikes.

Are Class 1 e-bikes allowed on the NCR Trail?

Yes — the Maryland Department of Natural Resources explicitly permits Class 1 e-bikes (pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph / 32 km/h) on the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail. Class 2 (throttle-only) and Class 3 (above 20 mph) are not permitted on the trail. All rental bikes are operated in Class 1 mode on the trail.

What is the trail surface like?

The NCR Trail is surfaced with crushed limestone (stone dust) throughout its Maryland length — compact, well-maintained, and comfortable on both the comfort and mountain-style bikes. It is 10 feet (3 m) wide with clear mile markers the entire length.

What is the weather policy?

The NCR Trail is open year-round and is beautiful in all seasons. Rentals go forward in all but severe weather. The trail's heavy tree canopy provides significant shade in summer; layers are recommended in fall and winter. Contact the shop if severe weather is expected on your rental day.

Do I need to book in advance?

Booking in advance is recommended, especially on weekends and during peak season (April through November). The shop is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM; closed Monday and Tuesday.

What time does the shop open and close?

Wednesday through Sunday, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM. Closed Monday and Tuesday. All bikes must be returned by closing time.
