FAQs
Can I leave my personal belongings at the shop?
No secure customer storage is available at any of the locations. Bring only the essentials — anything that fits in a small backpack or straps to the rear rack on your bike.
What pedals are available for high-performance road bikes?
For road bike rentals, you're welcome to bring your own pedals and the team will attach them. The shop carries SPD, SPD-SL, Look Original, and Look Keo clipless pedals, plus flat pedals and cages. A limited inventory of bike shoes is also available to rent — call ahead to check availability in your size.
Is there a minimum age to rent an electric bike?
There's no specific minimum age stated, but riders must be at least 5 feet (152 cm) tall and comfortable on a bike. The shop conducts a test ride at the store before any rider heads out. Kids' electric bike options (Woom, Specialized Turbo Levo SL) are available for shorter riders — see individual listings for height ranges.
What are my options if I'm traveling with young children?
There are several family configurations available.
- Very young children (up to 43 lbs / 19.5 kg) can ride in a baby seat or enclosed trailer attached to an adult comfort or electric bike. The trailer fits up to two small children.
- For slightly older kids ready to join in but not ready to ride solo, a tag-a-long attachment or the Kidz Tandem (child steers from the front) works well.
- Older kids who can ride but might not make the full round-trip solo can use a Comfort Tandem or the Electric Bike + Passenger configuration. Kids' bikes in 20" and 24" wheel sizes are also available.
Not sure what size to reserve? Just book your best guess — it can be swapped at the shop.
How safe is the ride to Golden Gate Park?
The Golden Gate Park route is recommended for riders already comfortable with city traffic. All suggested routes follow official numbered San Francisco bike routes, which may include a mix of dedicated bike lanes, shared lanes, and separated paths. It's a great urban ride but does involve more city riding than the bridge route.
What do I do with my bike once I'm in Sausalito?
There's no rental return location on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge. You can lock your bike at Joinery Restaurant (300 Turney Street, Sausalito) while you explore the town. Most riders take the ferry back to enjoy the bay views, but riding back is always an option. A paid bike drop-off service is available if you prefer to leave the bike in Sausalito — call the shop for assistance.
Where does the ferry drop off in San Francisco?
The Sausalito Blue & Gold Fleet ferries drop off at Pier 41, right at Fisherman's Wharf — convenient if that's where you picked up. Check ferry schedules and current options at the shop, as service routes can vary by season.
Do I have to take the ferry back? What are my options?
The ferry is completely optional. You can ride back over the bridge both ways. Ferry tickets are available for purchase at the shop at a discounted rate — and if you decide to ride back instead, unused tickets are refunded. A private charter ferry option (Blazing Saddles exclusive) is available seasonally from Sausalito directly to Pier 39.
Is the Golden Gate Bridge route safe for beginners and families?
Yes — it's rated beginner to intermediate and follows a mostly flat, mostly car-free bike path. Families with kids of various ages do this ride regularly. An electric bike is a great option if you'd like a little extra assistance on any inclines.
Do I have to ride the Golden Gate Bridge route?
Not at all. You're welcome to take your bike anywhere you'd like in the city. Other popular recommended routes include Fisherman's Wharf to Golden Gate Park, Union Square to the Golden Gate Bridge via Golden Gate Park, the Marin Headlands Loop, Tennessee Valley, and Angel Island. Maps for all are available in the shop.
Are private group rentals available?
Yes — private group activities can be arranged. Contact the shop directly for group pricing and availability.
Is there parking at the shop?
Street parking is available in Fisherman's Wharf but can be limited. Public transit or rideshare is recommended. The Hyde Street location is directly at the Powell/Hyde Cable Car turnaround.
What if something goes wrong with my bike during the ride?
Call the shop — the phone number is printed on both your map and on the bike itself. The team always answers and will do their best to get you back on the road. In an emergency, call 911 first.
Is delivery available?
Bike delivery to most San Francisco hotels and addresses can be arranged. Contact the shop directly for a quote.
Is there a mobile app?
Yes — a free mobile app with sightseeing tips and route recommendations is available to download with all rentals.
Can I pick up at one location and drop off at another?
Yes, one-way rentals between the four Fisherman's Wharf locations are possible for an extra relocation fee per bike. You'll need to return to the same location you started from if you'd prefer to avoid this fee.
What if I don't make it back before the shop closes?
No problem — all locations have 24-hour drop-off facilities. If you need instructions on the after-hours return process, call the shop before closing.
Can I pick up early or drop off late?
All locations offer after-hours drop-off, so you can ride as long as you like. High-performance road bike rentals can be picked up the evening before for early-morning riders — the rental counts as a full 24-hour period from pickup.
Can I change my bike type when I arrive?
Absolutely. Reservations are fully transferable and changeable. If you reserved one type and want something different when you show up, the team can sort that out at the shop. This is especially helpful for families unsure about kids' sizing.
Do I need to make a reservation, or can I walk in?
Walk-ins are always welcome. That said, booking online in advance saves 20% on all-day rentals and helps the team prepare for the day. Reservations never expire and can be transferred to any future date or time if your plans change — no need to call ahead to reschedule.
How long has this bike rental operation been running in San Francisco?
This is a family-owned-and-operated business that has been sharing the Fisherman's Wharf bike experience for over 40 years. They're locally rooted with deep knowledge of the city's best routes.
