Description

Family-Friendly Private Winter Snowshoe Hike – Rocky Mountain National Park

A blanket of fresh snow changes a familiar trail into something new — quieter, brighter, and full of small clues the rest of the year hides. This hike is built for exploring that winter version of the park at an easy, family-friendly pace, with plenty of time to stop and look around.

Your guide keeps the group moving and engaged, pointing out animal tracks in the snow and sharing details about how the park's wildlife gets through the winter months. It's an easy way to introduce kids — and anyone new to snowshoeing — to the sport, and the trip typically wraps up with hot chocolate to warm everyone back up.

Duration

  1. Total trip length: approximately 5.5 hours, including check-in, the drive to the trailhead, breaks, and snowshoeing time

Location / Where to Meet

  1. Guests are picked up directly for groups of fewer than 4 — pickup location entered at checkout, must be within Estes Park
  2. For groups of 4 or more, your guide establishes a meeting point in Estes Park or at the trailhead instead

  1. Minimum age: all ages welcome
  2. A legal parent or guardian must accompany any participant under 18
  3. This hike is well suited to families and first-time snowshoers — no prior snowshoeing experience is needed, and your guide fits everyone with gear before setting out
  4. Group size: 1–5 people per trip (winter group sizes are capped lower than summer/fall trips); every trip is a private, custom booking for your party only
  5. Guests should be able to walk on snow-covered, uneven trail terrain with minimal assistance

FAQs

What is this hike about?

This is a family-friendly winter snowshoe hike, paced for kids and first-timers, with your guide pointing out animal tracks in the snow and sharing how the park's wildlife makes it through winter. Hot chocolate typically caps off the trip.

Is this hike suitable for young children?

Yes — this hike is specifically designed as an easier, family-oriented route, with a guide setting the pace and fitting everyone with gear beforehand.

Will we see animal tracks or wildlife?

Animal tracks in the snow are commonly spotted and a highlight your guide looks for with the group; live wildlife sightings vary and aren't guaranteed.

Do we need prior snowshoeing experience?

No — your guide fits you with gear and walks you through the basics before setting out.

What can I expect to see and do on a guided hike?

Beyond the hiking itself, your guide shares knowledge of the local history, geology, flowers, and trees, and keeps an eye out for wildlife along the way. If animals are spotted while driving and it's safe to stop, your guide will pull over so the group can observe from a safe distance. Elk, mule deer, marmots, pikas, and bighorn sheep are commonly seen, with moose and other wildlife possible as well.

Are your guides certified?

Yes. Guides are professional, trained, and Wilderness First Aid/CPR-certified.

How big are the groups, and will I be with strangers?

Every trip is a private, custom trip booked exclusively for your party — you won't be combined with other travelers. Group sizes run from 1 to 9 people, based on Rocky Mountain National Park's group-size regulations for a single certified guide.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, advance booking is recommended, especially during the busy summer season, to ensure guide and date availability.

Do I need a park pass?

You'll need a valid park pass or to pay the park entrance fee, but since you're on a guided trip, a timed-entry permit is not required — your guide handles that reservation for your group. Credit or debit is required at the park entrance; cash is not accepted.
