Description

Exit Glacier Ice Hiking Adventure – Seward, Alaska

This isn't a viewpoint stroll — it's genuine glacier travel deep inside Kenai Fjords National Park. You'll hike up to Exit Glacier, gear up at the lateral moraine, and step onto a living, shifting landscape of crevasses, sculpted blue ice, and meltwater features found nowhere else on Earth.

Exit Glacier is one of nearly 40 glaciers flowing from the massive Harding Icefield — a 700-square-mile (1,813 sq km) remnant of the last ice age that dominates the interior of the Kenai Peninsula. Getting on the ice requires a strenuous uphill hike of 1.3 miles (2.1 km) with roughly 1,300 ft (396 m) of elevation gain along the Harding Icefield Trail, which keeps groups well away from the crowds at the lower viewing area. The effort is absolutely worth it: once on the ice, your professional guide leads a route tailored to current conditions, explaining glacier dynamics, ice features, and the ecology of this rapidly changing environment.

Groups are kept deliberately small at a 5:1 guest-to-guide ratio, which means better pacing on the approach, more time on the ice, and photos that actually capture the scale of where you are. All glacier equipment — crampons, helmet, harness, trekking poles, and a small backpack — is provided. A deli-style lunch is included and typically enjoyed right on the glacier (conditions permitting), making this a true full-day Alaskan adventure.

This tour is ideal for physically fit adventurers who want a genuine backcountry experience without the crowds. No prior glacier or mountaineering experience is required — your guide handles all instruction on the ice.

FAQs

What is special about hiking on Exit Glacier?

Exit Glacier is one of nearly 40 glaciers flowing from the Harding Icefield, a 700-square-mile (1,813 sq km) remnant of the last ice age. Unlike viewpoint-only glacier experiences, this tour puts you directly on the ice to explore crevasses, meltwater channels, and blue glacial formations that most visitors never see. The strenuous approach along the Harding Icefield Trail keeps your group well away from crowded lower-trail areas, making for a truly immersive backcountry experience.

What is the best time to hike on Exit Glacier?

The glacier hiking season typically runs from late spring through early fall. Summer (June–August) offers the longest daylight hours and most stable conditions. Early season trips may encounter snow-covered terrain in addition to glacial ice. Your guide will always plan the route based on current conditions.

Do I need prior glacier or mountaineering experience?

No prior glacier or mountaineering experience is needed. Your guide will teach you everything you need to know — how to fit and use crampons, basic glacier safety, and how to move on the ice — before you step onto the glacier. That said, this is a strenuous adventure that requires solid physical fitness due to the steep 1.3-mile (2.1 km) uphill approach with approximately 1,300 ft (396 m) of elevation gain.

How physically demanding is this hike?

This tour is rated Strenuous. The approach involves 1.3 miles (2.1 km) of uphill hiking with roughly 1,300 ft (396 m) of elevation gain on steep, uneven terrain. Your guide sets a steady pace with breaks, but participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable with sustained hiking before booking. If you're unsure whether this trip is the right fit, reach out before booking and the team can help point you in the right direction.

How big are the groups on this tour?

Groups are kept small with a 5:1 guest-to-guide ratio. The maximum group size is 20 guests, supported by multiple guides so the group can be split by pace — no one gets left behind or rushed.

Can I bring my camera on the glacier?

Absolutely — and you'll want to. A waterproof case for your phone or camera is strongly recommended, as conditions on the glacier can be wet. The company is not responsible for damaged or lost equipment.

Are there any insects or wildlife concerns on this hike?

Mosquitoes and other biting insects can be present on the approach trail, particularly in summer — bug spray is recommended. On the glacier itself, insects are generally not a concern. Bears are present in Kenai Fjords National Park; your guides are trained in wilderness safety and bear-aware practices.

Do you practice Leave No Trace?

Yes — Leave No Trace principles are followed throughout all tours. There are no restroom facilities in the backcountry; guides explain field bathroom etiquette before departure in accordance with LNT practices.
