Description
Engineer Mountain Alpine Mountain Bike Tour in Durango, CO
This is Durango best mountain bike ride - and locals will tell you that without hesitation. The Engineer Mountain Trail delivers what Durango Biking Adventures calls free vert: a shuttle-assisted tour that trades a 2-mile climb for a breathtaking 6-mile descent through the San Juan Mountain alpine. Think big mountain views, wildflower meadows, rushing creeks, and singletrack that rewards every pedal stroke on the way up with pure flow on the way down.
Your group is shuttled from Durango up into the high country, where a local guide leads you through the Engineer Mountain area. The tour begins with a pedal up to Engineer Mountain Meadow - a spot that earns its own stop for views and a snack break. Then comes the descent: minimal pedaling, maximum grinning, with a few must-see overlooks built right into the route. The shuttle driver meets you at the bottom with snacks and cold drinks before the drive back to Durango.
This tour is ideal for intermediate to expert riders. Difficult sections are part of the ride, but your guide will coach the group through them to keep the adventure moving and fun.

FAQs
How difficult is this tour?
Intermediate to expert. The trail includes challenging sections, but your guide will support the group through them. This is not recommended for beginners or those who have never ridden singletrack.
What exactly is free vert?
The shuttle drops you at elevation so you earn a descent you did not have to fully climb yourself. On Engineer Mountain, that means approximately 2 miles of climbing for 6 miles of descending.
What is the trail like?
The Engineer Mountain Trail is an alpine singletrack route through the San Juan Mountains - meadows, creek crossings, sweeping views, and a long flowing descent. It is a local favorite for a reason.
Can we ride a different trail?
Yes. After booking, your guide will reach out before the tour. If you have already ridden Engineer Mountain Trail or want something different, Coal Creek Trail or other nearby options may be available.
What is the maximum group size?
Up to 5 people per tour.
Is a bike rental guaranteed for last-minute bookings?
Rentals cannot be guaranteed for bookings made within 24 hours. If unavailable, you will receive a full refund for the rental portion.
Why should we start early?
Alpine weather in the San Juans typically brings afternoon thunderstorms. An early start keeps the group in the clear and makes for the best riding conditions.
What is the weather policy?
If the operator cancels due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, guests receive a full refund or credit.
Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes. All participants must complete and sign a waiver and pre-trip briefing before the tour. Details are provided in your booking confirmation.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations made with at least 2 weeks notice will receive a refund minus a $20 fee. Cancellations made less than 2 weeks before the tour are non-refundable. No-shows will be charged the full amount. If Durango Biking Adventures cancels due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, guests receive a full refund or credit.
