Description
Emerald Cut Sunset & Glow Kayak Tour on Rock Springs Run – Apopka, FL
Watch the Emerald Cut transform from golden hour to full darkness — and then light it back up from below. The Sunset & Glow Tour is a one-of-a-kind after-hours kayak experience on Rock Springs Run, combining the warm glow of a Florida sunset with the magic of paddling clear-bottom kayaks equipped with color-changing LED underglow lights that illuminate the crystal-clear riverbed beneath you as night falls.
The tour launches from King's Landing at sunset and paddles upstream through the Emerald Cut for just under a mile as daylight fades. Once the group reaches the top, it's time to turn around and float back downstream in the dark — each kayak lit from below with color-changing LEDs casting a glow through the transparent hull and into the spring water beneath. It's an entirely different side of a river that's already one of Central Florida's most beautiful, and unlike anything else available in the region.
Two experienced guides lead every tour to ensure safety and navigation after dark. This is a guided, after-hours event available exclusively on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with start times that vary based on sunset. Only rental clear-bottom kayaks are permitted on this tour — no personal vessels.
Please note: due to the nature of paddling in the dark, some prior kayaking experience is required. If paddling after dark doesn't sound enjoyable to you, this tour may not be the right fit. The outfitter reserves the right to remove any guest from the tour who is unable to properly navigate and steer their kayak.

FAQs
What is a Rock Springs Run Glow Kayak Tour?
This is a 2-hour guided kayak event on the Emerald Cut of Rock Springs Run, available on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays only. The tour launches at sunset and paddles upstream through the Emerald Cut as daylight fades. Once the group reaches the top, everyone floats back downstream in the dark in clear-bottom kayaks equipped with color-changing LED underglow lights that illuminate the riverbed below. Two guides lead every tour for safety and navigation after dark.
What makes the clear bottom kayaks special on this tour?
The transparent hulls combined with the LED underglow lights create a stunning effect — the lights shine through the clear insert and into the spring water below, illuminating the riverbed, fish, and plant life as you float downstream in the dark. It's a completely different visual experience from anything you'd get in a standard kayak, and particularly striking on the crystal-clear water of the Emerald Cut.
Why can't I wear shoes, sunscreen, or bug spray?
The clear insert in the bottom of the kayak is a delicate material that can be scratched by footwear and chemically degraded by sunscreen and bug spray. To protect the equipment and ensure a clear, glowing view for every guest, these items are strictly not permitted. Wear UV-protective clothing during the sunset portion instead of sunscreen, and arrive without any product applied to your skin.
Do I need prior kayaking experience for this tour?
Some prior kayaking experience is required. You need to be able to independently navigate and steer a kayak — this is non-negotiable for after-dark paddling on a moving river. First-time kayakers are not suited to this tour and are encouraged to try the Emerald Cut Kayak Adventure or Sunrise/Sunset Paddle first. If paddling in the dark doesn't sound enjoyable, please do not book this tour.
What days and times is this tour offered?
The Sunset & Glow Tour runs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays only. Start times vary by season based on the actual time of sunset. Check the booking page for current availability and scheduled start times.
Is this tour good for kids?
The minimum age is 13 years old. All guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in a double kayak. Given the after-dark nature of the tour and the experience requirement, it is not appropriate for younger children or inexperienced young paddlers.
How far is the paddle and how difficult is it?
The tour covers approximately 2 miles / 3.2 km — just under one mile upstream at sunset, then the same stretch back downstream after dark with the current. It is not physically strenuous, but navigating in the dark requires attentiveness and some prior paddling ability.
What if I arrive late?
There is no grace period for late arrivals on this event. Guests who arrive late will not be permitted to launch once the tour has begun, and no refund or eGift Certificate will be provided. Please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled start time.
Can I bring my own kayak?
No — only rental clear-bottom kayaks equipped with LED lights are permitted on this tour. Personal vessels are not allowed.
Can I bring my phone or camera?
Yes, but bring a dry bag or waterproof case. There is a chance of getting wet, and you will be paddling in the dark. The outfitter is not responsible for damaged or lost items. Note that any camera or phone must not come into contact with the clear kayak insert.
What is Rock Springs Run and what makes it special?
Rock Springs Run is one of only two designated Wild and Scenic Rivers in Florida, flowing through the heart of the Wekiva River Basin. It is spring-fed, which means the water maintains a constant, crystal-clear quality year-round at a refreshing temperature. The Emerald Cut section is particularly famous for its brilliant green water, overhanging jungle-like canopy, and sandy riverbed. It is a genuine natural oasis only 30 minutes from Orlando.
What wildlife can I expect to see?
Rock Springs Run is rich with Florida wildlife. Commonly spotted animals include river otters, turtles, white-tailed deer, alligators, black bears, and a wide variety of bird species including great egrets, herons, and bald eagles. The spring-fed water also supports diverse fish species visible through the clear water. The river corridor is home to the largest colony of Florida Black Bear in one area and has been featured in National Geographic documentaries.
Are pets allowed?
No — for safety reasons, dogs and all other pets are not permitted at King's Landing. Service animals are permitted but must remain under the handler's control at all times.
Can I bring a cooler?
Yes, coolers are welcome. However, no glass, no Styrofoam, and no alcohol are permitted. All coolers will be checked before launching.
Are speakers or music allowed on the water?
Speakers are not allowed on any vessel launching from King's Landing. This policy is in place to preserve the natural experience for all guests on the water.
Is parking available?
Free street parking is available along the road outside the property. Locker rentals and luggage storage are also available on-site for a fee.
What is the weather policy? Will the tour run if it rains?
Tours run rain or shine in most conditions. Tours will only be canceled by a staff member in the event of severe weather or a safety concern. In that case, a full refund is provided. Light rain, overcast skies, or cool temperatures are not grounds for cancellation. If you have concerns about weather on your booking date, contact the team in advance.
What are the restroom and facility amenities on site?
King's Landing has restrooms, locker rentals, luggage storage at the office, and a small general store on-site. At the end of this tour, guests arrive at Wekiva Island, which has a café, craft beer and wine bar, and a boardwalk overlooking the river.
