Description
Emerald Cut Guided Kayak Adventure on Rock Springs Run – Apopka, FL
Paddle one of Central Florida's most iconic waterways with a knowledgeable guide by your side. The Emerald Cut Kayak Adventure takes you deep into Rock Springs Run on a 2-hour guided tour through the world-famous Emerald Cut — a spring-fed stretch of river so clear you can see straight to the sandy bottom, framed by a lush, jungle-like canopy and the sounds of Wild Florida all around you. Just 30 minutes from Orlando, this is the classic King's Landing experience.
Named for its brilliant green waters, the Emerald Cut section of Rock Springs Run winds through overhanging trees, tangled riverside vegetation, and sandy-bottomed shallows as it flows through the heart of the Wekiva River Basin. Rock Springs Run is one of only two designated Wild and Scenic Rivers in the state of Florida, and every bend in the river holds the possibility of spotting alligators, river otters, white-tailed deer, turtles, black bears, and a remarkable array of birds — great egrets, herons, and bald eagles among them.
The first half of the tour is a guided paddle upstream against the gentle current, weaving over and under fallen trees and through the twists and turns of the Emerald Cut until reaching the bridge at Kelly Park. Your guide will stop at their favorite spots along the way for swimming and wildlife watching. The second half is all reward — sit back, stow your paddle, and let the current carry you gently back to the launch point.
Please note: during the rainy season in August and September, rising water levels can cause the Emerald Cut's clear blue waters to turn a tannic, tea-brown color until you reach the top of the run. This is a natural process as rainfall moves through Wekiwa State Park and into the river, leaching tannins from fallen leaves. The water clarity typically returns as conditions normalize.

FAQs
What is the Emerald Cut Kayak Adventure?
This is a 2-hour guided kayak tour on the Emerald Cut of Rock Springs Run — approximately 2 miles / 3.2 km total. Your guide leads you upstream through the heart of the Emerald Cut, stopping at the best swimming spots and pointing out wildlife along the way. The second half of the tour is a relaxing downstream drift back to the launch point with the current. All skill levels are welcome.
How does this tour differ from the sunrise and sunset guided paddles?
The route and format are the same — upstream paddle, downstream drift, same stretch of the Emerald Cut. The Emerald Cut Kayak Adventure runs during daytime hours, giving you the best visibility for spotting wildlife and appreciating the color of the water. The sunrise and sunset tours offer a more atmospheric, quieter experience at the edges of the day. If you're prioritizing wildlife viewing and water clarity, the daytime tour is an excellent choice.
How does this tour compare to the Clear Bottom Kayak Adventure?
Both tours cover the same stretch of the Emerald Cut. The key difference is the kayak itself — this tour uses standard kayaks, while the Clear Bottom Kayak Adventure uses fully transparent kayaks with a window into the riverbed below. If you want the most immersive underwater viewing experience, the clear kayak tour is worth the upgrade. If you'd prefer a traditional paddle without gear restrictions, this is the tour for you.
How far is the paddle and how difficult is it?
The tour covers approximately 2 miles / 3.2 km. The upstream portion involves paddling against a gentle 2–3 mph current, which provides a light workout. The return trip is a gentle drift with the current. The tour is suitable for all skill levels, including beginners, as long as you are a confident swimmer.
Is this tour good for kids?
Yes, the tour is family-friendly. Children ages 2–12 are welcome and must paddle in a double kayak with an adult. Children under 2 are not permitted. There is no upper age limit, but all participants must be mobile and in good physical condition.
Are there swimming opportunities on the tour?
Yes — your guide will point out the best spots to stop and swim. The spring water maintains a consistent refreshing temperature year-round. Wearing a swimsuit under your clothing is recommended.
What if the water isn't clear on the day of my tour?
During the rainy season in August and September, rising water levels can cause the Emerald Cut to turn a tannic, tea-brown color. This is a natural and temporary process. While the water is less visually dramatic during this period, the tour still runs and wildlife viewing remains excellent. If you have concerns, reach out to the team before your booking date.
Can I bring my phone or camera?
Yes, but bring a dry bag or waterproof case. There is a real chance of getting wet. The outfitter is not responsible for damaged or lost items.
What is Rock Springs Run and what makes it special?
Rock Springs Run is one of only two designated Wild and Scenic Rivers in Florida, flowing through the heart of the Wekiva River Basin. It is spring-fed, which means the water maintains a constant, crystal-clear quality year-round at a refreshing temperature. The Emerald Cut section is particularly famous for its brilliant green water, overhanging jungle-like canopy, and sandy riverbed. It is a genuine natural oasis only 30 minutes from Orlando.
What wildlife can I expect to see?
Rock Springs Run is rich with Florida wildlife. Commonly spotted animals include river otters, turtles, white-tailed deer, alligators, black bears, and a wide variety of bird species including great egrets, herons, and bald eagles. The spring-fed water also supports diverse fish species visible through the clear water. The river corridor is home to the largest colony of Florida Black Bear in one area and has been featured in National Geographic documentaries.
Are pets allowed?
No — for safety reasons, dogs and all other pets are not permitted at King's Landing. Service animals are permitted but must remain under the handler's control at all times.
Can I bring a cooler?
Yes, coolers are welcome. However, no glass, no Styrofoam, and no alcohol are permitted. All coolers will be checked before launching.
Are speakers or music allowed on the water?
Speakers are not allowed on any vessel launching from King's Landing. This policy is in place to preserve the natural experience for all guests on the water.
Is parking available?
Free street parking is available along the road outside the property. Locker rentals and luggage storage are also available on-site for a fee.
What is the weather policy? Will the tour run if it rains?
Tours run rain or shine in most conditions. Tours will only be canceled by a staff member in the event of severe weather or a safety concern. In that case, a full refund is provided. Light rain, overcast skies, or cool temperatures are not grounds for cancellation. If you have concerns about weather on your booking date, contact the team in advance.
What are the restroom and facility amenities on site?
King's Landing has restrooms, locker rentals, luggage storage at the office, and a small general store on-site. At the end of this tour, guests arrive at Wekiva Island, which has a café, craft beer and wine bar, and a boardwalk overlooking the river.
