Description
Emerald Cut Clear Bottom Kayak Tour on Rock Springs Run – Apopka, FL
See Rock Springs Run like never before — from the inside out. The Clear Bottom Kayak Adventure puts you in a fully transparent kayak on the world-famous Emerald Cut, giving you an unobstructed window into the crystal-clear spring waters below. Watch fish dart beneath your hull, spot turtles gliding along the sandy riverbed, and glide over emerald-green depths that seem to glow from within. It's the most immersive way to experience one of Central Florida's most stunning natural waterways — only 30 minutes from Orlando.
The Emerald Cut section of Rock Springs Run winds through a lush, jungle-like canopy of overhanging trees, sandy-bottomed shallows, and tangled riverside vegetation. Rock Springs Run is one of only two designated Wild and Scenic Rivers in Florida, part of the Wekiva River Basin ecosystem — a place where alligators, river otters, white-tailed deer, great egrets, herons, and even bald eagles share the banks alongside you.
The tour begins paddling upstream against a gentle current, weaving through the twists, turns, and natural obstacles of the river until reaching the bridge at Kelly Park. Your guide will point out wildlife, share local knowledge of the ecosystem, and show you the best spots to stop and swim along the way. The return trip is the reward — sit back, stow your paddle, and drift gently downstream with the current, watching the world pass by through the floor of your kayak.
Please note: during the rainy season in August and September, rising water levels in the Emerald Cut can cause the normally clear blue waters to turn a tannic, tea-brown color until you reach the top of the run. This is a natural process as rainfall moves through Wekiwa State Park and into the river, leaching tannins from fallen leaves. The water clarity typically returns as conditions normalize.

FAQs
What is the Clear Bottom Kayak Adventure?
This is a 2-hour guided kayak tour on the Emerald Cut of Rock Springs Run using fully transparent clear-bottom kayaks — approximately 2 miles / 3.2 km total. The clear hull gives you an unobstructed view of the spring waters, sandy riverbed, fish, and aquatic life below you as you paddle. The first half is a guided paddle upstream against a gentle current; the second half is a relaxing drift back downstream with the current.
What makes a clear bottom kayak different from a regular kayak?
The kayaks are fully transparent, giving you a 360-degree view — including directly below the waterline. Rather than looking over the side at the water, you're essentially floating on top of a window into the spring. This makes it far easier to spot fish, turtles, and the sandy riverbed, and creates a truly unique visual experience on water this clear.
Why can't I wear shoes, sunscreen, or bug spray?
The clear insert in the bottom of the kayak is a delicate material that can be scratched by footwear and chemically degraded by sunscreen and bug spray. To protect the equipment and ensure a clear view for every guest, these items are strictly not permitted on this tour. Wear UV-protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat in place of sunscreen, and arrive without any product applied to your skin.
How far is the paddle and how difficult is it?
The tour covers approximately 2 miles / 3.2 km. The upstream portion involves paddling against a gentle 2–3 mph current through the Emerald Cut, which provides a light workout. The return trip is a gentle drift with the current. The tour is suitable for all skill levels, including beginners, as long as you are a confident swimmer.
Is this tour good for kids?
Yes, the tour is family-friendly. Children ages 2–12 are welcome and must paddle in a tandem kayak with an adult. Children under 2 are not permitted. There is no upper age limit, but all participants must be mobile and in good physical condition.
Are there swimming opportunities on the tour?
Yes — your guide will point out the best spots to stop and swim. The spring water maintains a consistent refreshing temperature year-round. A swimsuit is recommended.
What if the water isn't clear on the day of my tour?
During the rainy season in August and September, rising water levels can cause the Emerald Cut to turn a tannic, tea-brown color. This is a natural and temporary process. While the water is less visually dramatic during this period, the tour still runs and wildlife viewing remains excellent. If you have concerns, reach out to the team before your booking date.
Can I bring my phone or camera?
Yes, but bring a dry bag or waterproof case. There is a real chance of getting wet. The outfitter is not responsible for damaged or lost items.
What is Rock Springs Run and what makes it special?
Rock Springs Run is one of only two designated Wild and Scenic Rivers in Florida, flowing through the heart of the Wekiva River Basin. It is spring-fed, which means the water maintains a constant, crystal-clear quality year-round at a refreshing temperature. The Emerald Cut section is particularly famous for its brilliant green water, overhanging jungle-like canopy, and sandy riverbed. It is a genuine natural oasis only 30 minutes from Orlando.
What wildlife can I expect to see?
Rock Springs Run is rich with Florida wildlife. Commonly spotted animals include river otters, turtles, white-tailed deer, alligators, black bears, and a wide variety of bird species including great egrets, herons, and bald eagles. The spring-fed water also supports diverse fish species visible through the clear water. The river corridor is home to the largest colony of Florida Black Bear in one area and has been featured in National Geographic documentaries.
Are pets allowed?
No — for safety reasons, dogs and all other pets are not permitted at King's Landing. Service animals are permitted but must remain under the handler's control at all times.
Can I bring a cooler?
Yes, coolers are welcome. However, no glass, no Styrofoam, and no alcohol are permitted. All coolers will be checked before launching.
Are speakers or music allowed on the water?
Speakers are not allowed on any vessel launching from King's Landing. This policy is in place to preserve the natural experience for all guests on the water.
Is parking available?
Free street parking is available along the road outside the property. Locker rentals and luggage storage are also available on-site for a fee.
What is the weather policy? Will the tour run if it rains?
Tours run rain or shine in most conditions. Tours will only be canceled by a staff member in the event of severe weather or a safety concern. In that case, a full refund is provided. Light rain, overcast skies, or cool temperatures are not grounds for cancellation. If you have concerns about weather on your booking date, contact the team in advance.
What are the restroom and facility amenities on site?
King's Landing has restrooms, locker rentals, luggage storage at the office, and a small general store on-site. At the end of this tour, guests arrive at Wekiva Island, which has a café, craft beer and wine bar, and a boardwalk overlooking the river.
