Explore one of the most stunning lakes in Colorado on this guided stand-up paddleboard (SUP) tour of Electra Lake. Surrounded by high alpine views and dotted with small islands, this large, privately owned lake is a peaceful and scenic setting perfect for a relaxing half-day on the water. Whether you're new to SUP or a seasoned paddler, our guides will help you feel confident and safe while exploring hidden coves and taking in the mountain scenery.

This mixed group tour is perfect for solo travelers, couples, or small groups who want to share the experience with others. We'll pack a fresh, organic picnic lunch from our local natural foods co-op, with plenty of dietary options available. Your guide will handle all the logistics—from board setup to paddle instruction—so you can focus on soaking up the sunshine, snapping unforgettable photos, and enjoying the peaceful rhythm of the lake. With the option to convert your SUP into kayak mode, there's flexibility to suit every comfort level.

Duration

Tour Length: 4–5 hours total

This includes paddle time on the lake, lunch, and transportation to and from the lake (approximately 30 minutes each way from Durango).

Please Note - Mandatory Boat Cleaning: Electra Lake is a privately owned, pristine body of water that requires mandatory cleaning of all paddleboards, paddles, and PFDs at the entrance. Depending on the size of your group and the queue ahead of you, this process may take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour. While this may extend the trip, we believe the incredible views, peaceful setting, and paddling experience are more than worth the wait.

Location / Where to Meet

We'll provide transportation to and from your lodging (within 5 miles of Durango’s city center). If you are staying farther outside of town we will establish a spot to meet and transport you from there, or we can meet at the lake. We'll be in touch in advance of the tour to establish a meeting point.

As this is a group tour, please recognize your guide will be making multiple stops to pick up and drop off other guests. Please be on time with your set pick-up time to avoid delaying the entire tour.

Ages & Requirements

No minimum age required – Because we're on a lake, this SUP tour has no minimum age! If you are planning to bring your little ones who may need more time or paddle a little slower than your average adult, please book a private paddleboard tour and your guide will be happy to move at the pace of your family’s needs. If you are not booking a private tour we ask that all guests be able to paddle upstream at a moderate pace for approximately 1-1.5 hours.
Guests must be able to swim up to 30 feet while wearing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).
Children under 8 years old must ride on the same board as an adult and be supervised by a parent or legal guardian at all times.
Life jackets (PFDs) are required and provided for all participants.
All guests should be comfortable listening to and following guide directions on and off the water.
Weight capacity per SUP – Most boards can hold up to 250–300 lbs; some tandem-friendly boards are available—please request in advance if needed.

What to bring

Rain Jacket (even if the weather calls for pure sunshine, that isn’t always accurate and it can change quickly here)
A swimsuit or clothing you don’t mind swimming in, if you fall off your board
A variety of clothing layers to adjust to speed of movement and varying weather conditions that will likely occur. Athletic clothing is preferred.
A hat to protect from the intense Colorado sun
Sunglasses
Long sleeve sunshirt (not required, but definitely recommended for this environment)

Your all-time favorite snacks
1-2 liters of water (We will have a large water jug in the vehicle to top up water bottles at the trailhead.)
Appropriate footwear: We find that most clients prefer to wear a sandal or some form of a water shoe when SUPing

FAQs

Do I need prior experience to go paddleboarding on Electra Lake?

No experience necessary! This tour is beginner-friendly, and our guides will provide instruction on how to paddle, stand up, kneel, remount your board, and convert it to kayak-mode.

What if I don’t want to stand up on the board?

Totally fine! You’re welcome to paddle kneeling, sit cross-legged, or convert your SUP to kayak-mode for more back support and easier paddling.

Are bathrooms available at the lake?

Yes, there are bathrooms and changing rooms at Electra Lake.

Where is Electra Lake?

The tour takes place on Electra Lake approximately 20 miles (~30 minutes) North of Durango, with transportation to and from town. Lake Electra is at 8,400ft in elevation, which for many traveling from out of town is great for acclimatization compared to the high elevation trails around 10,000ft! This makes for a great adventure day earlier on in your trip before you go exploring in the big mountains nearby.

Why does Electra Lake require boat cleaning?

Electra Lake requires all watercraft to be cleaned before entry to prevent the introduction of invasive species, like zebra mussels, which can harm the lake’s delicate ecosystem. This helps keep the water clean, the environment healthy, and ensures the lake stays beautiful and usable for years to come.
