Durango Bike Rentals for River Trail Cruises and World-Class Singletrack

Use coupon code tripoutside20 to save 20% on your rental during checkout!

Pedal the Peaks has been putting riders on bikes in Durango since 1992, and its Main Avenue shop is an easy place to grab a bike and go. You might want a relaxed spin along the Animas River Trail or a big day on Durango's world-class singletrack. Either way, the shop has a bike for it, from comfy townie cruisers to carbon full-suspension mountain bikes and pedal-assist e-MTBs. Every rental comes with a helmet.

Choose from four types of rental bikes:

  • Townie bikes: comfortable hybrid cruisers in step-through and unisex frames, sized XS to XL. They're the shop's most popular rental and a great way to explore town and the Animas River Trail.
  • Townie e-bikes: pedal-assist cruisers, including the Orbea Optima and electric step-through townies. There's also an Aventon Abound LR cargo e-bike with a child carrier for families.
  • Full-suspension mountain bikes: aluminum bikes from Ibis, Transition, and Orbea in sizes XS to XL. You can also step up to carbon bikes from Orbea, Intense, Transition, and Ibis, which come from the shop's demo fleet and are subject to availability.
  • Full-suspension e-MTBs: Orbea Rise or Urrun pedal-assist mountain bikes, sizes S to XL, built to take the sting out of Durango's big climbs.

Rentals are self-guided, so you set the route. The crew is happy to share their favorite rides. Options run from the flowy trails at Overend Park and the rocky, technical terrain of Horse Gulch to seasonal high-country singletrack above 10,000 feet.

TripOutside Prices: 20% Off Every Rental

Duration

Choose the rental length that fits your plans:

  • Half day: any 4 hours within shop hours
  • Full day: shop open to close
  • 24 hour: an overnight rental, returned the next day at the time you picked it up

Townie e-bikes and e-MTBs can also be rented for up to five days. Pickup times are booked by the hour during shop hours: Monday to Saturday 9am to 6pm, and Sunday 10am to 5pm. Online booking closes ahead of the rental day, so reserve in advance.

Location of Rental Pickup

Pedal the Peaks, 598 Main Avenue, Suite B, Durango, CO 81301. Open in Google Maps

The shop is on Main Avenue in downtown Durango, and townie riders can head out right from the shop to explore town and the Animas River Trail.

Ages

There's no minimum age, and families are welcome. Pedal the Peaks rents kids' bikes and baby trailers for all ages, plus trail-a-bike tag-alongs, all reserved separately. Trailers and tag-alongs can't be used with e-bikes, so families who want pedal assist can reserve the Aventon Abound LR cargo e-bike with a child carrier instead. Adult rental bikes range from XS, for riders about 5'2" and under, to XL, for riders 6' and up.

Difficulty / Skill Level

Townies and townie e-bikes are the easygoing, beginner-friendly choice for cruising around town and along the Animas River Trail.

The mountain bikes and e-MTBs are built for Durango's singletrack. Because rentals are self-guided, choose trails that match your skills. The shop's favorite local rides range from flowy intermediate (blue) trails at Overend Park to double-black descents like Haflin Creek. Pedal assist on the e-MTBs makes long climbs much more manageable.

FAQs

How do I choose the right bike size?

As a general guide: XS fits riders up to about 5'2", Small fits 5'0" to 5'5", Medium fits 5'5" to 5'10", Large fits 5'9" to 6'1", and XL fits riders 6' and up. The townie e-bikes have a forgiving fit, so going up or down a size usually works if your first choice is booked.

What's the difference between a half-day, full-day, and 24-hour rental?

A half-day rental is any 4 hours within shop hours. A full-day rental runs from shop open to close. A 24-hour rental is an overnight rental, returned the next day at the time you picked it up. Townie e-bikes and e-MTBs can also be rented for up to five days.

Where can I ride?

Check out our Durango Mountain Biking post. Townies and townie e-bikes are made for cruising town and the Animas River Trail. For mountain bikers, the shop's favorites start with Overend Park (the Test Tracks), which has flowy blue trails like Star Wars and Brown's Ridge. Horse Gulch offers blue-to-black terrain and connects to the new Durango Mesa Park flow trails. Haflin Creek is a double-black descent of about 3,500 feet in under 3.5 miles. Seasonal high-country trails like Coal Creek and Engineer Mountain sit above 10,000 feet. Check Durango Trails for current conditions. E-MTB riders should confirm a trail is open to e-bikes before heading out.

What do I need for pickup?

Bring an ID. No deposit is required. Every rider must also complete the shop's online waiver before a bike can leave the store, and filling it out after you reserve keeps pickup quick.

Is damage protection available?

Yes. Optional damage insurance can be added to your rental and covers up to $350 in damage to the bike. It's a smart add-on for mountain bike rentals.

Can I bring the kids?

Absolutely. There's no minimum age, and the shop rents kids' bikes and baby trailers for all ages, plus trail-a-bike tag-alongs. Trailers and tag-alongs can't be used with e-bikes, so families who want pedal assist can reserve the Aventon Abound LR cargo e-bike with a child carrier.

How do I get 20% off on the rentals?

Use coupon code tripoutside20 to save 20% on your rental during checkout!
