FAQs

How many people fit on a giant paddleboard?

Our giant 15-foot paddleboards are built for group adventures and comfortably fit 3–5 adults on one board. With a total weight capacity of around 1,050 lbs, the boards are extremely stable and perfect for friends, families, or small groups who want to paddle together.

Depending on the size of the group, a maximum of 6–7 people can fit on a single board, though we typically keep groups smaller so the board remains easy and fun to paddle. Paddling as a group also makes the experience more social as everyone works together to glide across the lake.

If you’re booking with a smaller group, you may be paired with other guests to help balance the board and create a more interactive experience on the water. No paddleboarding experience is required—our guides will show you everything you need to know before the tour begins.

What time do the bats come out in Austin?

The bats typically emerge from beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge around sunset. The exact timing changes throughout the season, but most evenings the flight begins 20–40 minutes after the sun goes down. On peak summer nights, the emergence can last up to 45 minutes as waves of bats spiral into the sky to begin their nightly hunt.

How many bats are in Austin?

Austin is home to the largest urban bat colony in the world. The colony under the Congress Avenue Bridge is made up of approximately 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats during peak season. Watching them take flight in massive swirling clouds across the evening sky is one of the city’s most iconic wildlife experiences.

When is the best time to see the bats in Austin?

Bat viewing is best from late spring through early fall, when the colony is at its largest. The most dramatic flights usually occur from June through August, when warm weather and baby bats increase the size of the nightly emergence. During this time, the bat flight can be especially large and active.

Where can you see the bats in Austin?

The most famous place to see the bats is the Congress Avenue Bridge over Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin. Visitors watch from several vantage points, including the bridge itself, the viewing areas along the lake, nearby trails, or from the water by kayak or paddleboard. Seeing the bats from the lake offers one of the best and most memorable perspectives.

What time of year do the bats come out in Austin?

The bats are typically in Austin from around March through early November. They migrate to Austin each spring and stay through the warmer months before heading south for the winter. The largest and most reliable bat flights usually occur between May and September, when temperatures are warm and the colony is at its peak size.

Do I need paddleboarding experience?

Not at all. This tour is beginner-friendly and many guests are paddleboarding for the first time. Your guide will give a quick lesson at the start, and most people feel comfortable paddling within just a few minutes. The water on Lady Bird Lake is typically calm, making it a great place to learn.

Are the bats scary or will they fly into us?

Not at all! The bats fly high overhead as they leave the bridge to feed on insects and have no interest in people. From the water you’ll see them stream across the sky in huge swirling patterns—it’s fascinating and surprisingly peaceful to watch.

Is this tour good for families and kids?

Yes! This is a great experience for families with kids who enjoy being outdoors. The bat emergence is exciting for all ages, and watching the city transition from sunset to nighttime on the water is something kids and adults both remember long after the trip.

What is the nighttime paddle like?

The paddle back after the bats emerge is one of the most magical parts of the tour. Downtown Austin lights up, reflections shimmer across the lake, and the water becomes calm and quiet after the excitement of the bat flight. It’s a peaceful way to end the evening.

Will we definitely see the bats?

The bats emerge most evenings during the season, and our guides monitor their patterns closely to position the group at the best viewing spot. While wildlife is never 100% predictable, sightings are extremely consistent during peak season and most guests get an incredible view of the emergence.

Will we get photos during the tour?

Yes! Your guide will take photos throughout the experience so you can focus on enjoying the moment. High-quality photos from the tour are shared with you afterward so you can remember your time on the water and the incredible bat flight.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are welcome on Giant Paddleboard tours! The large, stable boards can easily accommodate pets. Bring a leash and make sure your dog is comfortable around water.
