Door County Cave Point Kayak Tour

Experience majestic Lake Michigan from a unique point of view. Kayak crystal blue waters while exploring Door County's stunning coastline caves.  Join our professional guides as they take you above, alongside and into Cave Point County Park. Constantly changing over the past 400 million years Cave Point has taken its time to look this good. It's your adventure, let us be your guide!

Kayak Tour Overview

Join us for a beautiful kayak trip along Door County’s pristine Lake Michigan coastline.  The trip will take you along Cave Point County Park, and Whitefish Dunes State Park.  With the unique vantage point of your kayak, you’ll be able to experience the beauty of the dolostone caves and and observe the beautiful karst landscape on crystal clear Lake Michigan.   These dolostone rock formations are what is known as the Niagara Escarpment, and Door County's band of rock goes from Wisconsin around the north end of Lake Michigan and Huron all the way to Niagara Falls. We venture into a couple of the accessible caves, and spend some time relaxing with our feet in the water, enjoying the natural beauty and soaking up the sun before kayaking back to the launch point at Schauer Park.

What to expect

The water is generally calmest in the morning, so it is best to book earlier in the day. The kayak seating area does tend to get a little wet so dress accordingly. Flip flops and water shoes are highly recommended, but you can also jump in barefoot!  We also highly recommend shorts or leggings made of materials other than cotton (synthetic fabrics) for wicking moisture away from your body, as you will get wet. On calm days there is ample opportunity to view the submerged caves all along the coast. The conditions are always subject to change, but as long as you arrive with a smile the trip will only brighten your day.

Itinerary for a Cave Point trip

We like all of our guests to show up at our location 15 minutes prior to their tour. We start with the waiver and then you will get fitted for your life jacket. Then we will leave from our shop at the departure time and drive 10 minutes to the boat launch where all of our guest will be given a paddle and receive an orientation on the most effective methods for maneuvering a kayak. Once the tour will kayak alongside Cave Point County Park to the edge of Whitefish Dunes State Park. This trip is an out and back, meaning that we will then return to the boat launch where we began before driving back to the shop. On the water will take 2 hours and cover roughly 4 miles of some of Door County's most popular coastline.

Kayak Tour FAQs

What should I bring?
You will want to bring water, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, shoes that can get wet, extra dry clothes for colder days and some positive energy. GoPros, cameras and cell phones, with a proper case and lanyard, are a great way to capture your experience.
What kind of kayaks are we going to paddle?
Our guests normally paddle in sit-on-top tandem kayaks. The exception is when a group has an odd number of people. Groups will odd numbers will have to decide amongst themselves which guest will be paddling in a single sit-on-top.
Will I get to go inside any of the caves?
With the continuously rising lake levels most of the caves at Cave Point County Park are now submerged. There are still two caves that we can kayak into but they do require calm conditions and we are not always able to safely to get into them. On calm days Cave Point does offer immense clarity and you will have the best seat to see the submerged caves.
Where do we meet?
All Cave Point County Park trips leave from our shop in Jacksonport, WI. The address is 6300 Highway 57, Sturgeon Bay WI 54235. Although it is a Sturgeon Bay mailing address we are located  about 20 miles north on the lake side of the highway. It is about a 5 minute drive to the boat launch  before our adventure to kayak Cave Point can begin!
When Should I Arrive?
You will want to arrive at least 20 minutes prior to your trip starting. Allow for time to use the restroom, sign the waiver, get fitted for your life jacket and get some water.
Is there an age or weight limit?
Because the carrying capacity of the life jackets and kayaks we must place restrictions to be able to operate safely. The minimum weight limit is 40 lbs and the maximum is 250 lbs. Age is not as important as size and we can take anyone over 4 years of age.
How much experience do I need?
NONE! Our goal is to get everybody capable out on the water and showcase some of Door County’s beauty.
Can I bring my own kayak?
Absolutely! If you have a kayak and would like to join us in your equipment you are more than welcome.
What are your policies for cancellations and inclement weather?
If your trip is canceled because of inclement weather you will be given a full refund. If for some reason you book a trip and are unable to make it you must notify us within 24 hours to get your full refund.
