Description
Take Your First Breath Underwater in the Waters of Maui!
Before entering the ocean, you'll complete a short PADI eLearning session and receive a simple introduction to scuba equipment, underwater communication, and the basic skills you'll use during your dive. Once at the shore dive site, you'll practice a few easy skills in shallow water with your instructor until you feel comfortable and confident. From there, it's time to begin your first real scuba adventure.
As you glide effortlessly beneath the surface, you'll discover an entirely new perspective of Maui's marine world. Swim alongside Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu), colorful tropical reef fish, coral formations, and other fascinating marine life while experiencing the incredible sensation of weightlessness underwater. Because groups are kept private or limited to no more than four participants, your instructor can move at a comfortable pace, provide plenty of individual attention, and ensure your first scuba diving experience is both safe and unforgettable. Most guests spend approximately one hour underwater, air consumption permitting, making this an incredible way to discover why so many people fall in love with scuba diving after just one dive.

FAQs
How important is it to book in advance?
Booking in advance is the best way to avoid the disappointment of a sold-out day, especially during peak season. The sooner you reserve your spot, the better your chances of getting the date and time you want.
Do I need to complete a medical form before diving?
Yes. All divers complete a PADI/DAN medical questionnaire at check-in, though it's best to fill it out ahead of time. Answering "yes" to certain questions requires a physician's clearance before you can dive, and cancellations due to a "yes" answer aren't refunded within 48 hours of the dive.
Can I fly after diving?
Flying directly after scuba diving is incredibly dangerous and could result in a life-threatening illness called the Bends/Decompression Sickness. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines for flying after diving include:
- A single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000 ft (305 m) interval of 18 hours suggested.
- Multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000ft (305m) interval of 24 hours is suggested.
- Dives requiring decompression stops are recommended to have longer than 18 hours.
Please discuss with your dive guide ahead of time what is suggested!
Can I go hiking or visit Haleakala after diving?
Any activity that brings you above 1000 ft (305 m) can trigger the Bends/Decompression Sickness. Please check your hike elevation to ensure that at no time you will be going up in elevation. If the hike does go to elevation, you must treat it like a preflight interval as listed above in the flying FAQ.
Do I need any previous scuba diving experience?
No. Discover Scuba Diving is specifically designed for people who have never scuba dived before. Under the direct supervision of a certified PADI Professional, you'll learn the basics of scuba equipment, underwater communication, and essential safety skills before entering the ocean. Every step is explained clearly, and your instructor stays with you throughout the entire experience.
Will I receive a scuba certification?
No. Discover Scuba Diving is an introductory experience rather than a certification course. It allows you to experience a real scuba dive under the direct supervision of an instructor without completing the full PADI Open Water certification.
If you decide you love diving, your instructor can explain the next steps toward becoming a certified scuba diver through a PADI Open Water Diver course.
What marine life might I see during my first dive?
Maui's reefs are home to an incredible variety of marine life. Depending on the dive site and conditions, you may encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu), colorful tropical reef fish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, moray eels, octopus, nudibranchs, and many other fascinating reef creatures. Every dive is different, making each underwater adventure unique.
