FAQs
Do I need to book in advance?
Booking in advance is strongly recommended, especially during peak season. Trips can and do sell out, and walk-up availability is not guaranteed.
Can I bring my own snorkel gear?
Yes, you are welcome to bring your own mask and snorkel. Rental gear is also included with your ticket.
Do I need to know how to swim to snorkel?
While formal swimming ability isn't a hard requirement, it is strongly recommended that you are comfortable in open ocean water. Flotation devices are available if needed. Please inform your guides if you are not a confident swimmer.
How do we get in and out of the water?
The boat is equipped with two large ladders deployed from the back. Getting in and out is straightforward. For those who want a more exciting entry, there are also spots to jump in.
Can I snorkel with a beard or mustache?
You can, but facial hair can prevent a tight mask seal and allow water to leak in. It's recommended to shave at least your mustache before the trip. If you'd prefer not to, bring petroleum jelly or chapstick to coat your mustache and improve the seal.
Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?
Contacts are perfectly fine and often the best option for seeing clearly underwater. Glasses cannot be worn under a snorkel mask. If you have a prescription mask, feel free to bring it — rental shops typically don't carry them. Fun fact: everything appears about 25% larger and closer underwater.
What sunscreen should I use?
Please use reef-safe, non-nano mineral sunscreen. Common sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens are harmful to coral and banned in many Florida Keys areas. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as an alternative.
What marine life can I see when snorkeling at Key West's reef?
The Florida Keys Barrier Reef is home to over 500 species of marine life. On a typical snorkel you might encounter parrotfish, queen angelfish, French angelfish, sergeant majors, blue tangs, yellowtail snapper, hogfish, trumpetfish, spotted trunkfish, bluestriped grunts, mangrove snapper, green moray eels, southern stingrays, spotted eagle rays, grouper, barracuda, and tarpon. Sea turtles are frequently spotted and always a highlight.
When is the best time to snorkel in Key West?
Snorkeling is excellent year-round in Key West, thanks to warm, clear water and consistently mild temperatures. Visibility tends to be best in the calmer summer months, though the reef is active and beautiful in every season.
Where exactly does this trip go?
Your guides monitor conditions daily and select the best available reef location. Common sites include Sand Key Reef and other sections of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary — typically a 20–40 minute sail from the marina.
What kind of boat is this trip on?
The trip runs aboard the "Sandie Cat," a 65-foot triple-deck catamaran — Key West's newest and largest snorkeling vessel. It features a top sun deck, a fully stocked bar, 2 above-deck modern restrooms, an illuminated dance floor area, state-of-the-art sound system, and ample seating and standing space for up to 149 guests.
Is this trip good for beginners?
Absolutely. Your guides provide expert snorkeling instruction on the way to the reef, covering how to clear your mask, breathe through the snorkel, and navigate in the water. The reef conditions at Key West are generally calm and well-suited for first-time snorkelers.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Your captain assesses sea conditions on the day of departure. If the trip is deemed unsafe, it will be cancelled and a full refund issued. Trips run through light rain — weather delays or cancellations are only for genuine safety concerns.
Where do I park?
Street and paid public parking is available near the William St marina. There is no private lot at the departure point.
Are there restrooms available?
Yes — all boats are equipped with above-deck modern marine restrooms.
