Description

Snorkel with Sea Turtles at the Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve!

Your day begins with a scenic ferry ride to Culebra, where our certified tour guides will make sure you learn all about the island, its history, sites, culture, climate, ecosystems, and wildlife. Your aquatic journey starts at unspoiled Tamarindo Beach located on the west coast of Culebra and within the Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve. Following complete pre-ride instructions; join your KPR guides as you kayak over the calm, turtle frequented waters of the Reserve.
Along the way, enjoy the breathtaking views of Culebra’s deserted cays, and the vast marine fauna. Concluding the 30-minute paddle across the Marine Reserve, get ready to explore the underwater world as you jump out of your kayaks to discover some of the most amazing marine life in the Caribbean!
After the first snorkel, get back in the kayak, grab a snack, and prepare to paddle to our second and favorite spot; the calm sea grass beds of the Reserve. This area is home to beautiful Green Sea Turtles in their natural habitat. Our guides will lead you through this experience in a responsible manner as you explore their gardens and take beautiful pictures! Concluding your kayak & snorkel adventure, enjoy a wonderful break for lunch and relax with a Piña Colada at Culebra's World Famous Flamenco Beach!
After exploring the underwater world, you’ll head to the world-famous Flamenco Beach to relax on the soft sand, take a dip in the warm, clear waters, or sip a refreshing piña colada while soaking in the views of this Caribbean gem.

Please also be respectful of any marine animals including but not limited to turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins. Please never chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. Enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path.

FAQs

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing with swimwear underneath, and bring water shoes or flip-flops.

What if the ferry is delayed?

Ferry schedules can change without notice. We recommend allowing extra time for unexpected delays.

Do I need to bring my own snorkeling gear?

Snorkeling gear is provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if preferred.

I don’t know how to swim, can I still go?

Since this tour includes snorkeling, we do recommend that you know at least the basics of swimming. However, you will be provided with a US Coast Guard approved life jacket, so no expert knowledge of swimming is required.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.

Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’

Are there sharks?

Shark incidents in Puerto Rico’s waters are extremely rare, and serious injuries are even rarer. When you enter the ocean, it’s important to remember that it’s a natural, wild environment with many types of marine life, including sharks. Although the chances of a shark-related injury are very low, they are still part of the ocean’s ecosystem, and the ocean should be approached with respect. By learning about sharks and following safety guidelines, you can minimize even this small risk.

Can I snorkel if I wear glasses?

Standard eyeglasses can’t be worn with a snorkel mask, but prescription masks are available for those who need vision correction while snorkeling. If you’re interested, consider looking into a prescription mask option before your tour. Alternatively, contact lenses can be worn under a snorkel mask, though it’s best to close your eyes if water enters to prevent losing a lens.

Can you go underwater with a snorkel?

Yes, snorkels allow you to breathe with your face in the water at the surface. If you’d like to dive down, though, water will enter the snorkel, so you’ll need to hold your breath until you resurface. Once back at the surface, you can clear the snorkel by blowing out the air in your mouth hard. That should clear the snorkel, but if it doesn’t, tread the water, remove the snorkel from your mouth and dump the mouthpiece out.

How long is the ferry ride to Culebra?

The ferry from Ceiba to Culebra takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on weather conditions and the type of ferry. High-speed passenger ferries are usually faster than cargo ferries.

STANDARD POLICY*

We have a 48-hour cancellation policy for all of our excursions. Up until 48 hours before check-in time, you may change your reservation or cancel it for a full refund. Cancellations made in less than 48 hours before check-in time, late arrivals, and “no-shows” will maintain a full charge. All cancellations must be made directly with Kayaking Puerto Rico by telephone or email. If you booked through a Third Party (TripAdvisor, Viator, Expedia, Get Your Guide, Airbnb, etc.) you should contact them to ensure your reservation is properly changed or canceled.

This policy also applies to cruise ship passengers and guests flying into Puerto Rico. Plan your schedule accordingly to avoid any potential for missing the start time.

*GROUPS OF 10 OR MORE GUESTS

Groups of 10 or more guests must cancel at least 2 weeks prior to the date of the excursion in order to receive a full refund. Cancellations of groups made in less than 2 weeks prior to the excursion date will maintain a full charge on any spaces we are unable to resell. Guests that are no-shows or late arrivals will receive the full charge.

WEATHER CANCELLATIONS

Rain is very common in the Tropical region our tours take place in. These tours go out rain-or-shine! That being said, KPR Operations Team makes the decision to cancel a tour due to weather if necessary for safety reasons. Please do not make the mistake of deciding not to attend due to weather as you will still be charged if the excursion goes out. If you ever have a question about the weather conditions, please call us before making a decision.

In the case of a canceled tour we will notify you as soon as possible with alternatives such as rescheduling to another date, booking another tour, or full refund.

Due to the sometimes unpredictable weather in the Caribbean, cancellations may be done the same day on site.
