Description

Explore the Tanamá River, Kayak the Portillo Cave, and Hike Through Cueva del Arco!

Step into the wild heart of Puerto Rico on the River Caving Tour and explore a landscape shaped by centuries of natural forces. Over four hours, you’ll navigate unspoiled river and forest trails that echo the paths of the island’s ancestors. Your guide leads you on an interpretive journey, connecting you with the history, ecology, and raw beauty of the Northern Karst region.
The adventure begins with kayaking through Portillo, a 1,000-foot (305 meter) long underground river cave where sunlight filters through openings and the sounds of nature surround you. From there, trek through boulder-strewn canyons and natural pools carved from limestone, arriving at Cueva del Arco (Arch’s Cave). Here you can bathe under crystal-clear spring waterfalls, take in the panoramic canyon walls, and experience one of the most unique underground landscapes in Puerto Rico.
The tour continues with forest hiking across moderate-to-semi-intense terrain, crossing a 150-foot (46 meter) suspension bridge over the Tanamá River, and jumping and swimming in natural pools framed by breathtaking vistas. Every step combines adventure with education, from the geological formations to the local flora and fauna, giving you a full ecotourism experience that’s thrilling, immersive, and unforgettable.

FAQs

How do your tours support the environment and local communities?

Our Ecotours and daily practices promote a minimal impact on the environment and encourage the involvement with adjacent communities. Only locals are our guides and the ones who have worked on the development of our course. A very important part of our tours is the interpretation of cultural, historical and ecological facts for the benefit of all our visitors, including social projects, school and university students and teachers.

That’s the M.E.T.A. (GOAL) of Batey Zipline Adventure:

  • Minimal impact on the environment,
  • Educational experience on natural and cultural heritage,
  • Tourism that doesn’t disturb the natural settings,
  • Active involvement with local communities.

BZA is also a proud supporter of many community groups and provides a wide variety of local employment opportunities.

What kind of wildlife might I see in the caves and along the river?

In the caves and along the Tanamá River, you can encounter freshwater shrimp, freshwater crabs, and small river fish. Bats often roost in the ceilings of Portillo Cave, particularly fruit-eating species and insectivorous bats, which help control local insect populations. Along the forested riverbanks, you may hear or see coquí frogs, native birds like the Puerto Rican tody and tanager species, and various small reptiles and lizards. In the pools and slow-moving sections of the river, freshwater snails and microinvertebrates are common, reflecting the area’s clean, oxygen-rich waters.

Are the caves historically significant?

Yes. The caves were used by Taíno people, Puerto Rico’s indigenous inhabitants, for centuries as shelters, ceremonial sites, and temporary river crossings. Some rock surfaces show natural formations that resemble symbols or markings used for orientation or ritual purposes. Archaeological studies in the Northern Karst region indicate that these river corridors were vital for transport, freshwater access, and subsistence activities, making the caves both culturally and historically meaningful.

What makes the Tanamá River and Northern Karst region unique?

The Northern Karst region is defined by limestone formations shaped by millions of years of water erosion, resulting in underground rivers, caves, and vertical canyons. Tanamá River is unusual because it flows through subterranean tunnels like Portillo Cave, emerges into open canyon sections with boulder-strewn riverbeds, and forms natural pools and waterfalls such as those at Cueva del Arco. This combination of underground rivers, limestone walls, and forested surroundings is rare, creating a complex ecosystem that supports endemic amphibians, fish, and plants while offering dramatic scenery unique to Puerto Rico.

Are the caves lit or do we use natural light?

Portillo Cave and Cueva del Arco rely mostly on natural light entering from cave openings, which highlights the river’s clarity and the limestone formations. In Portillo, light penetrates from the entrance and occasional ceiling fissures, creating dim but navigable areas for kayaking. Guides carry handheld LED lights or headlamps for safety in shadowed or narrow sections, but the experience emphasizes seeing the caves as naturally illuminated by the environment, preserving the underground atmosphere and allowing visitors to hear the river and local wildlife without artificial interference.

Is there a maximum age to do the adventure?

Although we have received a lot of grandparents who have done the complete tour, we recommend that older people participating meet our physical requirements and are used to doing physical activities.  The tour is not recommended for people with serious conditions on the back, knees, or ankles. People with recent surgeries should not take part in the tour.
