Durango Nordic Center - Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing near Purgatory
Get ready for an epic day in the San Juans at Durango Nordic Center - your basecamp for classic and skate skiing or snowshoeing through scenic alpine terrain. Just a few minutes from Purgatory Resort, the Nordic Center offers the gear rentals and passes you need to enjoy groomed trails surrounded by pine forests and killer views of Engineer Mountain. The trails are groomed regularly, and there’s a cozy warming hut for breaks between laps.
The Durango Nordic Center offers rentals, lessons, day passes, and programs designed for every age and skill level. Rentals are beginner-friendly, and staff will help dial in your gear. If you're new to Nordic skiing, you can add a lesson (just book ahead). Snowshoeing does not require experience and is a fun option for those wanting an easier and more relaxing adventure.
Rental Gear
You can rent full setups for both adults and kids for:
- Classic cross country skiing
- Skate skiing
- Snowshoeing
The rental gear is for on-site use only, so plan to explore the 25 km of ski trails or 8 km of snowshoe loops that crisscross this peaceful winter playground.

Location of Rental Pickup
Durango Nordic Center 49786 US-550, Durango, CO 81301 Located just 1/3 mile north of Purgatory Resort, rentals are picked up at the Nordic Center’s main lodge. Trails start right from the center - no transport needed.
Ages & Requirements
- Minimum age: 5+ for skis, depending on size and ability
- No experience required for snowshoeing. For skiing, it's recommended to know the basics or book a lesson
- No pets allowed at the Nordic Center
- Equipment must be returned before the center closes at 4pm

FAQs
Can I take the rental gear off-site?
Nope! All rentals are for on-site use only on the Nordic Center trails.
Do I need a day pass if I’m renting gear?
Yes - gear rentals don’t include a trail pass. Be sure to grab one when you reserve or arrive.
Do I need experience to rent ski gear?
Not at all. The crew will help fit you, and you can book a lesson if you’re new to Nordic. Snowshoeing is easy and doesn’t require instruction.
Is there parking at the Nordic Center?
Yes! Free parking is available onsite. Be prepared for snowy conditions.
Do I have to rent a full package of gear?
Nope - the Nordic Center also rents boots, poles and skis separately!
Cancellation Policy
- 50% refund if you request a cancellation (for any reason) more than 24 hours prior to your visit. Request a refund by contacting the nordic center by email and include your order number in the request.
- In lieu of a 50% refund, we offer a postponement policy, where you may request to have your lesson, rental, or clinic rescheduled for a later date at no cost. These requests must be made more than 24 hours prior to your visit.
- No refunds will be provided if requested within 24 hours of the scheduled visit. At this point, we have scheduled instructors and reserved gear and cancellations incur losses for us. Durango Nordic reserves the right to offer the postponement policy in these cases at our discretion.
- Any refunds will be credited back to your original payment method.
