FAQs
What does Coral Sands Canyon look like? What's the scenery like?
Coral Sands Canyon is a winding, labyrinthine slot canyon with soaring walls of red and orange sandstone that twist and narrow as you descend. In the narrowest sections, the walls create a natural corridor that amplifies sound and light in remarkable ways — sun shafts filtering down from above create an ethereal play of light and shadow. The canyon floor alternates between sandy sections, polished rock, and the occasional water pocket.
What fitness level is required?
A high level of fitness is required. Guests must be able to hike 4 miles (6.4 km) over uneven terrain including steep sections, scramble over rocks, and complete five rappels with some rest between each.
Do I need prior experience to go canyoneering?
No prior experience is necessary. Your guide provides a full safety briefing and teaches all required techniques — rappelling, rope management, and canyon navigation — before you enter the canyon. Canyoneering tours are designed to be accessible to first-timers with the right level of fitness.
What does the guide teach me before we start?
Your guide will walk you through how to put on and adjust your harness, how to use the rappelling device, proper body position for descending, and how to communicate with the group in the canyon. The safety briefing is thorough, and your guide stays with you through every rappel.
Is canyoneering safe? What safety measures are in place?
Your guide is certified and trained in both canyoneering techniques and wilderness first aid. All technical gear — harnesses, helmets, ropes, and rappel devices — meets industry safety standards and is inspected regularly. Guides assess conditions in real time and have the authority to modify routes or turn back if conditions become unsafe. The weight limit of 250 lbs (113 kg) applies to all canyoneering tours and is a safety requirement related to harness and anchor load ratings.
Why is there a weight limit?
The weight limit is 250 lbs (113 kg). This limit is set for participant safety and is related to the load-rated capacity of the harnesses, rappelling devices, and anchor systems used. It is strictly enforced.
Will there be water in the canyon?
It depends on the canyon and recent weather. Some canyons regularly have standing water or pools, particularly in spring and after rain. Others are typically dry. Your guide monitors conditions and may take alternate routes if water levels are unexpectedly high. Wearing quick-drying clothes and bringing waterproof gear for your camera is recommended regardless.
What is the best time of year for canyoneering Coral Sands Canyon?
Late spring through early fall (May–October) offers the most comfortable temperatures and the most reliable dry conditions. Summer is warm and canyons provide welcome shade. Fall is a favorite for cooler temperatures and beautiful desert colors. In spring, winter, and fall, canyon temperatures can be significantly colder than outside, especially in wet sections — dress in warm, non-cotton layers accordingly.
Are photos taken during the tour?
Your guide will help you capture great moments throughout the tour. Bring your own camera or smartphone. A waterproof case or housing is recommended for any canyon that may have water. Selfie sticks or long poles are generally not practical inside narrow slot canyons.
Who are the guides and what are their qualifications?
Our guides are local experts with deep knowledge of the geology, history, wildlife, and ecology of southern Utah. Guides are trained in safety protocols and first aid, and are dedicated to providing both educational and entertaining experiences tailored to each group.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance, and several months ahead for large groups or peak season visits to ensure availability.
What is your approach to sustainability and conservation?
Our guides follow Leave No Trace principles on all tours. Guests are asked to pack out all waste, stay on designated paths, and respect all plants, wildlife, and rock formations. We operate in and around federally protected lands and take stewardship of those landscapes seriously.
What wildlife might I encounter on tours in the East Zion area?
The East Zion and southern Utah region is home to mule deer, coyotes, jackrabbits, lizards, hawks, eagles, ravens, and a variety of desert songbirds. Mountain lions are native to the area but extremely rarely encountered. Rattlesnakes are present in the region but generally avoid human contact — wearing closed-toe shoes and watching where you place your hands is good practice.
Do tours run in bad weather?
Most tours run rain or shine. However, if severe weather creates unsafe conditions, we will offer guests a different date or a full refund. For tours involving dirt road access (such as Candy Cliffs and White Pocket), road conditions after rain may require rescheduling.
