Description

Congaree National Park – Kayak through Cedar Creek

Paddle through one of South Carolina's most stunning landscapes on a guided kayak tour along Cedar Creek, a slow-moving black-water stream winding through the heart of Congaree National Park. This 3-hour out-and-back trip takes you deep into an ancient floodplain forest, where towering Bald Cypress, Tupelo, Pine, and Willow Oak trees rise from the dark, mirror-like water — some of them record holders for their species.

Your expert guides bring the park to life with fascinating stories about the area's history, ecology, and wildlife. Congaree National Park is teeming with life: keep your eyes peeled for river otters, white-tailed deer, wild boar, barred owls, and an array of birds and reptiles. The morning light reflecting off the creek is nothing short of magical.

FAQs

What wildlife might I see on Cedar Creek?

Cedar Creek and the surrounding floodplain are home to an impressive variety of wildlife. Guests commonly spot barred owls, great blue herons, various songbirds, river otters, white-tailed deer, turtles, water snakes, and spiders. During summer, you may see 1–2 alligators along the creek — they tend to mind their own business. Wild boar, raccoons, and vultures are also occasionally spotted. Wildlife varies by season, and your guides are experienced at spotting and identifying what's out there.

When is the best time to kayak Cedar Creek?

Spring and fall are widely considered the best seasons — the weather is comfortable, the foliage is stunning, and wildlife activity is high. Morning trips (9:30 AM start) are preferred as animals are most active early in the day and the light reflecting off the water is particularly beautiful. Summer trips are warm and lush, while winter trips can be surprisingly enjoyable on calm, mild days.

Is this trip good for beginners?

Absolutely. Cedar Creek is a slow-moving, calm black-water stream — perfect for first-time kayakers. Your guides will give you a full orientation before you launch and paddle with you the entire time. No prior experience is necessary.

What kind of kayaks do you use?

Sit-on-top kayaks with an elevated seat and adjustable backrest — among the most comfortable way to paddle. Both single and tandem (two-person) kayaks are available at the same per-person price.

What is the weight limit for the kayaks?

Single kayaks have a weight limit of 300 lbs (136 kg) and tandem kayaks have a limit of 500 lbs (227 kg).

What experience do your guides have?

Lead guides have over 20 years of combined kayaking experience in Congaree National Park. All guides are trained in on-water rescue, CPR, and first aid. They regularly attend classes and seminars focused on Congaree National Park and are passionate, knowledgeable naturalists.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes! Dogs are welcome, but they must have their own properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD / life vest). Please note that dogs can affect kayak stability. We ask that dogs weigh no more than 40 lbs (18 kg).

Are there alligators in the park?

Yes, alligators may be seen along Cedar Creek, particularly during summer months. They are typically not aggressive and tend to keep their distance. Your guides are experienced in navigating wildlife encounters safely.

Does the trip run in the rain?

Yes — trips generally run rain or shine. Some guests find a rainy paddle through Congaree especially atmospheric. Dress appropriately for the weather and bring layers if needed.

Is there parking at the launch site?

Yes, parking is available at the South Cedar Creek Canoe/Kayak Launch inside Congaree National Park.

Do you offer a Full Moon Paddle?

Yes! A Full Moon version of the Cedar Creek paddle is offered several times per year. Check the booking calendar for upcoming dates. The nighttime experience offers a completely different and magical perspective of the park.

Do you give back to the park?

Yes — 3% of every booking is donated to Congaree National Park. Booking this trip is a small way to support the preservation of this incredible place.
