What are some safety tips when kayaking in Condado Lagoon?
Safety is simple and easy in Condado Lagoon, but it’s still important to stay aware of your surroundings. Always wear the provided life jacket, stay within the designated lagoon area, and keep clear of motorized boat traffic near the marina entrances. Winds can pick up in the afternoon, so stay closer to the shoreline or mangroves if you’re newer to kayaking. Keep an eye out for swimmers, paddleboarders, and snorkelers—this lagoon gets busy. Hydrate well, apply sunscreen often, and never paddle under the influence. If you cross under the bridge between the marina and the lagoon, be mindful of currents and stay in the center channel for stability.
What is the best time of year to kayak in Condado Lagoon?
Condado Lagoon is paddle-friendly year-round, thanks to warm tropical temperatures and generally calm waters. The best conditions usually fall between December and April, when skies are sunnier, humidity is lower, and winds are lighter. Summer and early fall are still great for kayaking, but expect hotter weather and occasional afternoon showers. No matter the season, mornings typically offer the calmest water and the clearest visibility—perfect for spotting wildlife and enjoying smooth paddling.
What wildlife can I see while kayaking in Condado Lagoon?
Condado Lagoon is a protected marine reserve, so wildlife sightings are one of the highlights of kayaking here. You might see manatees (the lagoon’s most iconic residents), along with starfish, small fish schools, needlefish, sea cucumbers, crabs, and occasional rays gliding along the bottom. Near the mangroves, you’ll spot herons, egrets, pelicans, and other coastal birds resting or hunting. The water can be crystal clear on calm days, making it easy to look down and see the lagoon’s vibrant ecosystem as you glide through.
