FAQs

What makes Chiliboats unique?

Chiliboats are catamaran-style waterbikes, designed for comfort, stability, and easy pedaling. Thanks to our human anatomy, pedaling feels natural and effortless, using your legs at all times. They also feature an ergonomic saddle with a rigid backrest, providing extra comfort throughout the ride. All tours are conducted on double Chiliboats.

What marine life can I see when waterbiking at Condado Lagoon, Puerto Rico?

Condado Lagoon is a protected coastal ecosystem, so even though it’s right in the city, it’s surprisingly full of life. While pedaling on your waterbike, you may see a variety of fish species swimming near the surface or among the mangroves, including snappers, mullets, and small tropical fish. Occasionally, you can spot juvenile tarpon or rays gliding beneath the water. The lagoon is also home to several bird species, including herons, egrets, pelicans, and ospreys that hunt along the shoreline. With some luck, you might even see a sea turtle coming up for air or, in rare instances, a manatee in the deeper protected channels. The calm, shallow waters and surrounding vegetation make this a surprisingly rich area for wildlife spotting, offering an unexpected nature experience right in San Juan.

What is special about the 4 bridges (Guillermo Esteves, El Ferrocarril, San Antonio, and Dos Hermanos) and the San Jerónimo Fort?

The four iconic bridges you pass under during the waterbike tour are both functional and historical landmarks of San Juan.

  • Guillermo Esteves Bridge – A modern bridge that connects key neighborhoods, offering a sweeping view of the lagoon from above.
  • El Ferrocarril Bridge – Historically part of San Juan’s old railway network, it’s a reminder of Puerto Rico’s industrial past and transportation evolution.
  • San Antonio Bridge – Known for its architecture and strategic location, this bridge links communities while framing scenic water views for your ride.
  • Dos Hermanos Bridge – Often photographed for its picturesque urban setting and as a gateway into the calmer lagoon area.

San Jerónimo Fort is a small but significant historical structure along the lagoon. Built during the Spanish colonial era, it served as a coastal defense point, helping protect San Juan from invasions. The fort is a cultural and architectural gem, and from your waterbike, you get a unique perspective that combines history with a natural waterfront view—something that’s impossible from land alone.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.

Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’
