Description
Commuter E-Bike Rental — Explore the Pinellas Trail & Beyond
The commuter-style Pedego is a lightweight, efficient hybrid e-bike that covers ground quickly and confidently — perfect for riders who want to push further along the Pinellas Trail, cover more stops in a day, or simply prefer a more responsive, sporty feel underfoot. With a slightly more forward-leaning position than the cruiser, it's built for riders who want to feel connected to the ride while still having all the comfort and ease of a premium electric bike.
From the shop at Curlew Road, the Pinellas Trail runs in three directions: west along the Dunedin Causeway to Honeymoon Island, north through Palm Harbor and Wall Springs County Park to the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, and south through downtown Dunedin toward Clearwater. On the commuter, the 24-mile (39 km) round trip to Tarpon Springs is a relaxed morning ride. The full length of the trail from here to St. Petersburg and back is achievable in a day.
Bringing the family? Add the Burley child trailer at checkout and the kids ride along in comfort on any duration.

FAQs
What is the Pedego Commuter and who is it best for?
The Commuter is Pedego's hybrid city e-bike — lighter and more nimble than the Cruiser, with a slightly forward-leaning position that feels more athletic and efficient on the trail. It's the better choice for riders who want to cover more distance, move at a brisker pace, or simply prefer a bike that feels responsive and connected to the road. It's available in 26" and 28" wheel sizes to fit different heights, and staff will fit you to the right size at check-in.
Can I bring my kids?
Yes — add the Burley child trailer at checkout. It attaches to the Commuter and carries children safely while you ride the trail. See the Burley Child Trailer listing for full specifications.
Which model should I choose?
It depends on how many people are riding and what kind of experience you're after:
Cruiser E-Bike — The most comfortable and relaxed option. A wide padded saddle, upright seating, and a step-thru frame make it easy to mount and ideal for a leisurely pace. Best for riders who want to settle in, take in the Gulf views, and stop whenever something catches their eye.
Commuter E-Bike — A lighter, more responsive hybrid with a slightly forward-leaning position. It feels nimble and efficient on the trail, especially on longer runs like the Tarpon Springs round trip. Best for riders who want a more active feel or plan to cover serious distance.
Tandem — One bike, two riders. The pilot steers and controls the motor; the stoker just pedals and enjoys the ride. Best for couples or friends who want to share every mile of the experience rather than riding separately. Both riders need to be able to pedal independently.
What is a Pedego electric bike and how does it work?
Pedego electric bikes use a pedal-assist system — as you pedal, the motor kicks in to amplify your effort. You can dial the assist level up or down depending on how much help you want, and most models also have a throttle for effortless cruising whenever you like. On the flat, sun-soaked Pinellas Trail, the result is pure Florida fun — you can cruise farther than you'd ever ride on a regular bike, arrive at the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs without breaking a sweat, and still have energy to explore when you get there.
How far can I go on a single charge?
Most Pedego bikes are rated for 20–60 miles (32–97 km) per charge. The Dunedin to Tarpon Springs round trip is approximately 24 miles (39 km) — well within range. Riders who added a side trip to Honeymoon Island on the same outing report returning with battery to spare.
Do I need experience riding a bicycle to rent an e-bike?
You must be able to ride a bicycle independently before renting. Staff will walk you through a thorough tutorial, have you practice in the parking lot, and ensure you feel confident before you head out — multiple reviewers specifically praise the patience and thoroughness of the pre-ride orientation.
Are helmets required?
Florida state law does not require helmets for adult e-bike riders. Helmets are included with every rental and are strongly recommended. Riders under 16 are required by Florida law to wear a helmet.
Do I need to be physically fit?
Not at all. The Pinellas Trail is predominantly flat — it follows a former railroad bed through Pinellas County with virtually no elevation change. The e-bike's pedal-assist makes the riding effortless for all fitness levels. Reviewers in their 60s and 70s consistently describe covering 20+ miles without difficulty.
What is the weather policy?
Florida's weather is generally excellent for year-round riding, but summers are hot and humid. Morning start times are strongly recommended from June through September. The Pinellas Trail has limited shade on some sections — extra water is essential in warm months. Rentals go forward in all but severe weather. Contact the shop directly if a storm is in the forecast on your rental day.
What happens if I get a flat tire or the bike has a mechanical issue?
Contact the shop directly. Lock bikes securely whenever you stop at a restaurant or attraction along the trail.
Can I bring my camera or phone?
Absolutely. The Dunedin Causeway to Honeymoon Island, the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, and the Gulf views from the trail offer excellent photography throughout. The shop is not responsible for lost or damaged items.
Is parking available at the shop?
Yes — free on-site parking at 924 Curlew Rd. The shop is right off the Pinellas Trail at Curlew Road, also the start of the spur to Honeymoon Island.
Do I need to book in advance?
Booking in advance is recommended, especially for multi-day rentals and peak season weekends (October through April). Walk-ins are welcomed based on availability. The shop is open daily, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM.
What time does the shop open and close?
Daily, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. All bikes must be returned by 5:00 PM unless on a multi-day rental.
Where can I ride from the shop?
The shop sits directly on the Pinellas Trail at Curlew Road, with three great directions to explore:
West — Honeymoon Island (4 miles / 6.4 km each way): The Dunedin Causeway spur runs west from Curlew Road along the Causeway to Honeymoon Island State Park — one of Florida's most popular state parks, with 4 miles of beaches, a nature trail, and a ferry to Caladesi Island. The ride along the Causeway offers panoramic views of St. Joseph Sound and the Gulf beyond. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a relaxed out-and-back with time at the beach.
North — Tarpon Springs and the Sponge Docks (12 miles / 19 km each way): Head north on the Pinellas Trail through Palm Harbor and Wall Springs County Park to Tarpon Springs — a historic Greek-American community famous for its working sponge diving industry. The Sponge Docks district on the Anclote River has waterfront restaurants, sponge shops, and Greek bakeries. The round trip is approximately 24 miles (39 km) — comfortable on an 8-hour rental at a relaxed pace with a lunch stop.
South — Downtown Dunedin and Clearwater (6 miles / 10 km to Clearwater): Head south through downtown Dunedin's charming Main Street, past Weaver Park and along the waterfront, continuing south toward Clearwater's downtown and the Courtney Campbell Causeway trail connection.
Is the Pinellas Trail flat?
Yes — the trail follows a former railroad bed and is essentially flat throughout. There are 10 overpasses over busy streets and a few gentle hills between Miles 37 and 40 near Tarpon Springs, but the overall character is flat, wide, and easy. The Pinellas Trail is 15 feet (4.6 m) wide and paved with asphalt throughout.
Is Honeymoon Island State Park entry included?
No — Honeymoon Island State Park charges a per-person entry fee for cyclists and pedestrians (currently $4 per person; confirm at the park entrance). The fee is not included in the rental.
Is parking free at the shop?
Yes — free on-site parking at 924 Curlew Rd.
How does a 24-hour or multi-day rental work?
The bike goes with you. A charger is included — plug in at your accommodation each evening for a full battery every morning. Return the bike by 5:00 PM on your final rental day.
