Description
Pedego Avenue Commuter E-Bike Rental — Explore Boothbay Harbor, Maine
The Pedego Avenue is a sleek, lightweight hybrid commuter e-bike built for exactly the kind of riding that makes Boothbay Harbor's coastal roads so rewarding. Its upright-but-sporty geometry makes it equally at home on the smooth pavement of the Ocean Point route, the narrow lanes of the Southport Island circuit, and the village streets of downtown Boothbay Harbor. If you want a bike that feels quick and responsive without sacrificing comfort, the Avenue is your ride.
Boothbay Harbor sits on a peninsula jutting into Midcoast Maine's island-studded waters, surrounded by scenic byways that wind past granite coastline, working harbors, historic lodges, and some of the most beautiful water views in New England. The Avenue's pedal-assist handles the peninsula's rolling hills with ease, so you can spend more time looking at the scenery and less time working to reach it. Staff will fit the bike to your height and provide a map and personalized route recommendations before you head out.

FAQs
What is the Pedego Avenue and who is it best suited for?
The Avenue is Pedego's hybrid commuter-style e-bike — lighter and more nimble than the cruiser Interceptor, with a slightly forward-leaning position that feels more athletic and efficient on the road. It's ideal for riders who want a responsive, road-oriented ride on the Boothbay Peninsula's smooth coastal byways. It's also the most versatile model in the fleet — equally comfortable on a quick harbor tour or a full-day peninsula loop.
Which model should I choose?
The right bike depends on your riding style and how you want to experience the Boothbay Peninsula:
Pedego Interceptor Cruiser — The most comfortable and accessible option. Upright seating, a wide saddle, and a step-thru frame make it easy to mount and ideal for a relaxed, scenic pace. Best for riders who want to cruise the coastal roads without any athletic effort — just settle in and enjoy the view.
Pedego Avenue Commuter — A lighter, more responsive hybrid with a slightly forward-leaning position. It feels quicker and more nimble on the road than the Interceptor, without sacrificing comfort. Best for riders who want a bike that feels lively and efficient, especially on longer routes like Ocean Point or the Southport Island circuit.
Pedego Element Hybrid Adventure — The most capable bike in the fleet. Wider tires, a more confident feel on varied surfaces, and a geometry suited for active riding. Best for riders who want to explore beyond the main roads, handle gravel shoulders and back lanes with assurance, or simply prefer the most capable and planted feel on the peninsula's rolling terrain.
Not sure? The staff will fit you to each model and let you practice in the parking lot before you decide.
What is a Pedego electric bike and how does it work?
Pedego electric bikes use a pedal-assist system — as you pedal, the motor kicks in to amplify your effort. You can dial the assist level up or down depending on how much help you want. Most models also have a throttle for effortless cruising on flat stretches. On the hilly coastal roads of the Boothbay Peninsula, that assistance makes all the difference — riders consistently describe flying uphill with little to no exertion and arriving at every viewpoint without breaking a sweat.
How far can I go on a single charge?
Most Pedego bikes are rated for 20–60 miles (32–97 km) per charge. The Boothbay Peninsula's signature routes — the 16-mile (26 km) Ocean Point route, the 17-mile (27 km) Southport Island circuit, and the Spruce Point and Linekin Bay loops — are all well within range on a single charge.
Do I need experience riding a bicycle to rent an e-bike?
You must be able to ride a bicycle confidently and independently before renting. The roads on the Boothbay Peninsula are narrow and hilly in places — comfortable bike-handling skills matter here. Staff will fit your bike and walk you through the controls before you head out, and will suggest routes matched to your experience and fitness level.
Are helmets required?
Maine state law requires riders under 16 to wear a helmet. Helmets are strongly recommended for all riders and are available at the shop.
Do I need to be physically fit?
The Boothbay Peninsula's coastal roads are rolling — there are real hills here. The e-bike's pedal-assist makes them very manageable, but riders should be prepared for an active experience rather than flat cruising. Staff will recommend routes to match your fitness level and comfort.
What is the weather policy?
Midcoast Maine weather can change quickly. Coastal fog is common in the mornings and rain is possible any day of the year. Rentals go forward in all but severe weather — a light waterproof layer is always recommended regardless of the morning forecast. Contact the shop if severe weather is expected on your rental day
Is parking available at the shop?
Yes — there is a private parking lot on-site at 185 Townsend Ave.
Do I need to book in advance?
Booking in advance is strongly recommended, especially for weekly rentals and peak summer weekends. Boothbay Harbor is a popular Maine destination and bikes fill up quickly during peak season (June through September). The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 AM–6:00 PM and Sunday 10:00 AM–5:00 PM; closed Monday.
What time does the shop open and close?
Tuesday–Saturday 10:00 AM–6:00 PM; Sunday 10:00 AM–5:00 PM; closed Monday. All bikes must be returned by closing time unless on a 2-day or weekly rental.
Where can I ride on a half day or full day rental?
Staff will tailor a route based on your time and interests, but these are the Boothbay Peninsula's signature rides:
Ocean Point Route (16 miles / 26 km round trip): Head east from the shop into East Boothbay along a narrow coastal road with constant ocean views — waves crashing against granite ledges, working harbors, and the kind of intimate Maine coastline scenery that defines this region. Ocean Point itself is a dramatic rocky promontory at the tip of the East Boothbay peninsula.
Southport Island Circuit (17 miles / 27 km): Cross to Southport Island via the Townsend Gut Swing Bridge for a loop that takes in a beautiful beach, picnic areas, hiking trail access, and views of the historic Hendricks Head Light — one of Maine's most photographed lighthouses.
Spruce Point Loop (shorter): Ride along the historic byways of Spruce Point, passing the iconic Spruce Point Inn (once host to the Kennedy family and Ernest Hemingway) and America's longest wooden footbridge, with sweeping coastal water views throughout.
Downtown Boothbay Harbor and Linekin Bay: A shorter, more leisurely option following the Linekin Bay coastline through quaint neighborhoods and along the working waterfront, with stops at galleries and seafood spots in the village.
Is the terrain hilly?
Yes — the Boothbay Peninsula has genuinely rolling terrain. Some sections of the Ocean Point and Southport routes involve real climbing. The Avenue's pedal-assist makes the hills very manageable, but riders should expect an active experience rather than flat cruising. Staff will advise on which routes are best matched to your fitness and comfort level.
Are there restrooms along the routes?
The Boothbay Region YMCA, where Maine DOT's mapped routes originate, provides restrooms during regular business hours. Restrooms are also available at various points along the routes in village centers and state park areas. Confirm availability for your specific route at pickup.
How does a weekly rental work?
For multi-day rentals, the bike goes with you. A charger is provided — plug in at your accommodation each evening for a full battery every morning. Return the bike to the shop by closing time on your final rental day.
