Clear Kayak Reef Tour at Olowalu

Description
See the Reef Beneath Your Feet—Without Ever Getting in the Water!
Explore Olowalu Reef without ever putting on a mask or getting into the water. The transparent bottom of your clear kayak creates a window into the ocean below—and even magnifies the view—as you paddle above coral heads and lava formations searching for Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu), tropical reef fish, and other marine life. You can stay comfortably aboard the kayak for the entire experience while still getting an incredible look beneath Maui’s surface.
Your guide leads the way across the reef, helping spot wildlife and pointing out details that are easy to paddle past on your own. Pontoon attachments provide additional stability and buoyancy, making the kayaks extremely difficult to tip and creating a steady platform for sightseeing and photography. Beginners are welcome, and tours are kept intimate with no more than 10 guests per guide. Quality equipment is provided, including individually sized life vests, rash guards, reef-safe sunscreen, and dry bags.
Your adventure also gives back to the island you're exploring. Every seat booked helps support UH Maui College (UHMC) through the outfitter's kayaking-for-charity mission. Whether you simply prefer staying dry, don't want to snorkel, or want a completely different way to see Maui's marine world, this clear kayak tour lets you experience Olowalu Reef from the comfort of your seat with the underwater scenery directly beneath you.

FAQs
What marine life might we see while clear kayaking?
As you paddle over Olowalu Reef, the transparent bottom of your kayak gives you a window into the marine life below. Keep watch for Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu), tropical reef fish, sea urchins, and other reef residents moving among the coral and lava formations. Your guide will help point out wildlife that can be easy to miss from the surface. Because these are wild animals, specific sightings are never guaranteed.
Do I need previous kayaking experience for this tour?
No! Beginners are welcome, and no previous kayaking experience is required. Your guide will provide instruction and help you get comfortable before heading out. The clear kayaks are also equipped with pontoon attachments for additional stability and buoyancy, making them extremely difficult to tip and providing a steady platform for exploring the reef.
Why do the clear kayaks have pontoons?
The pontoons provide additional stability and buoyancy, making the clear kayaks extremely difficult to tip and helping create a more comfortable platform for sightseeing. This is especially helpful when you're looking down through the kayak, taking photos, or paddling with children or family members. The outfitter specifically designed the experience around creating a stable, confidence-inspiring way to explore the reef.
What makes a clear kayak different from a regular kayak?
Instead of looking over the side of an opaque kayak, the transparent bottom creates a window into the ocean directly beneath you. As you paddle across Olowalu Reef, you can look down at coral formations, tropical fish, sea turtles, and other marine life without even getting into the water. The clear bottom also magnifies the reef below, creating a unique perspective before you later explore the same underwater environment while snorkeling.
Do you have any tips for getting the best clear-kayak experience?
Yes! Wear reef-safe sunscreen, but try to apply sunscreen, lotions, and body oils before your tour and allow them time to fully absorb before getting into the kayak. Oily residue, fingerprints, and sunscreen can leave smudges on the clear surface and make it harder to see or photograph the reef below. Polarized sunglasses can also help reduce glare when looking through the kayak and across the water. And of course, clearer, calmer ocean conditions generally provide the best underwater views.
What safety measures are in place?
Your guides are hand-picked, safety-trained, and stay close by throughout the excursion. Life vests are individually fitted (sizes small through XXXL) with under-leg straps and a whistle, and every vest meets Coast Guard standards.
