Description

Mississippi River Kayak Tour to the Great Blue Heron Rookery – Minneapolis, MN

Minneapolis may be called the City of Lakes, but the Mississippi River holds treasures all its own. This 2.5–3.5-hour guided downriver paddle winds through a dramatic stretch of the river that shifts from wild national park shoreline to iconic urban skyline — and culminates at one of the most unexpected wildlife spectacles in the Twin Cities.

Your adventure begins at Boom Island Park, where your guides will shuttle you upriver to Anoka County Riverfront Regional Park in their bus. After a paddling skills introduction on land, your group sets off downriver, drifting past wooded islands and under a series of historic bridges — from old to new — toward the old Port of Minneapolis and the former Upper Harbor Terminal.

The tour's highlight is a close-up float past the great blue heron rookery: two river islands that are home to over 100 nests. Your guides affectionately call it the "City of Birds," and for good reason. In addition to great blue herons, the rookery is also home to great egrets, cormorants, and turtles. The noise, the movement, and the sheer scale of this urban wildlife colony make it a truly unforgettable stop.

From there, you'll ride the river's current back toward Boom Island while your guide shares the layered history of the river — stories written, washed away, and sometimes still visible on the banks. Depending on conditions, the tour wraps up with either a visit to the scenic Bassett Creek lagoon or a straight shot back to the Boom Island marina. Either way, you'll finish with one of the most distinctive skyline views in all of Minneapolis.

FAQs

What is the City of Birds / Great Blue Heron Rookery tour route?

You'll meet at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis, where your guides will shuttle you by bus upriver to Anoka County Riverfront Regional Park in Fridley. From there, you'll paddle approximately 5–7 miles (8–11 km) downriver past wooded islands, historic bridges, and the old Port of Minneapolis, before pausing at the great blue heron rookery — two islands hosting over 100 active nests. Depending on conditions, the tour ends with a visit to Bassett Creek lagoon or a direct return to the Boom Island marina.

How long is the route?

The route and duration are subject to flexibility depending on weather conditions, water level & flow rate, and group dynamics. Distance will be reflected accordingly, but averages 6 miles on this stretch.

What makes the great blue heron rookery so special?

The rookery is home to a remarkable urban wildlife colony spread across two river islands. Over 100 nests are visible in the treetops, and the islands are shared by great blue herons, great egrets, double-crested cormorants, and turtles. Floating up to the rookery by kayak offers a completely unique vantage point that you simply can't get from shore. It's one of the most unexpected and memorable natural experiences in the Twin Cities.

Do I have to paddle, or does the river do the work?

The river's current carries you naturally in a downstream direction, so the paddling effort is relatively low — most guests find this tour quite manageable. That said, you will be paddling and steering throughout, so a moderate level of physical activity is involved. Your guide will teach you everything you need to know before you launch.

Will photos be taken during the tour?

Yes! Your guide carries a waterproof camera and will take photos of your group during the paddle. You're also welcome to bring your own waterproof camera. A dry bag and cell phone cases are provided for items you want to keep close but protected from the water.

Where can I leave my personal belongings during the tour?

A dry bag is available to store small personal items you'd like to keep with you on the water. Leave larger items and valuables in your vehicle at Boom Island Park.

What is the best time to see the heron rookery?

The rookery is most active in the nesting season, which typically runs spring through mid-summer. Nesting birds tend to leave by late July or early August, so tours earlier in the summer season offer the best chance to see active nesting activity and the full colony in the trees.

What is your season length?

We start guide training at the end of April and offer tours from May through mid-October, weather and river conditions permitting.

What if the weather turns bad?

The route and duration of all our tours are subject to flexibility depending on weather conditions, water level, flow rate, and group dynamics. Our guides take all of these elements into account to make everyone’s experience enjoyable and safe. We will be in communication at least 24 hours before a trip if we foresee needing to adjust, reschedule, or cancel.

Do your guides accept tips?

Our guides always appreciate tips. Guests typically do 15-20%. Cash is generally easiest and many guides also accept e-payment methods like Venmo or PayPal.

Are your guides certified?

Your guides are all certified by the American Canoe Association (ACA), trained in water rescue and first aid, and bring years of experience leading paddlers of all abilities on the Mississippi. Founded in 2018, this locally owned guide collective is deeply passionate about the river, its ecology, and its history — and that shows in every stroke.

Cancellation Policy

Guests must notify staff within 12 hours of trip to be offered a full refund. All of our trips follow weather safety guidelines, so if cancellation is due to weather concerns, we will offer to either refund or rebook.
