Description

Espíritu Santo Island - 7 Day Sea Kayak Circumnavigation

An experience that must be lived at least once in a lifetime. Our most iconic expedition is a 7-day journey in which we paddle around the island in sea kayaks.

During this week of adventure, you will venture into one of the most beautiful islands in Mexico. Each day, we’ll paddle to a different beach, where we’ll set up camp and enjoy hikes, snorkeling, and learn about the local flora and fauna. Every afternoon, there will be a happy hour with regional and national dishes.

This experience can be done in Fully Catered mode, with the support of a motorboat that will transport our gear and supplies, and the presence of a chef who will delight you with the island’s most exquisite dishes.

It can also be done in expedition mode, where we will load all our equipment, clothing, food and kitchen in our kayak and we will cooperate with each other to set up camp and prepare delicious local dishes.

Itinerary - Espiritu Santo Circumnavigation

DAY 0 This day, you will check in at the hotel and enjoy the city of La Paz during the day. In the evening, you’ll meet your guide(s) in the hotel lobby to clarify any doubts and prepare for the next day.

DAY 1 After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll pick you up, make a quick stop in our offices to gear up, and then head to Playa Pichilingue, where we’ll board a motorboat (panga) to cross to Espíritu Santo Island. Upon arrival, the guides will explain safety measures and how to properly use the equipment and kayak. Before starting our first paddle, we’ll have lunch, and then begin our adventure. We’ll paddle under spectacular volcanic cliffs, ultimately reaching the first of many beaches where we’ll set up camp and enjoy the evening and sunset with a margarita in hand.

DAY 2 We’ll continue paddling, exploring more corners of the island. Among the bays, we’ll encounter colonies of seabirds and other wildlife that inhabit the island. We’ll reach a new beach to have lunch and rest. In the afternoon, we can explore the area with a hike or go snorkeling in the coral reefs. We’ll end the day with a delicious dinner and our traditional Happy Hour. DAY 3 Today, we’ll paddle to the north section of the island, passing by white sand bays, crystal-clear waters, and cliffs with unique rock formations. Each paddle connects us to the island’s unique geological history. As every day, we’ll have time to explore the sea and enjoy a sunset with a good book and a glass of wine in hand.

DAY 4 Today, we’ll take a well-deserved break from kayaking, spending 2 nights on the same beach to enjoy other activities. One of the highlights of our trip will be visiting La Lobera, a rocky formation that is home to over 400 sea lions residing in the Espíritu Santo Archipelago. We’ll have the opportunity to snorkel with these magnificent animals, and surely the pups will come close to swim and play with us.

DAY 5 Recharged, we’ll continue paddling toward the goal of completing the circumnavigation of the island. Today, we’ll paddle along the eastern side, where the magnitude of the cliffs will take your breath away. At the end of the day, we’ll camp on a beach that separates the Espíritu Santo Archipelago. From here, we’ll enjoy views of the channel that connects the two islands. DAY 6 Today, we’ll face the longest paddle of the trip, covering the eastern side of the island. This journey, approximately 4.5 hours long, will take us through a remote and solitary landscape, offering a unique experience. We’ll pass by stunning sea caves that we can explore, before reaching a 3-km long white sand beach, where we’ll set up our final camp of the trip.

DAY 7 On our final day of paddling, we’ll complete the circumnavigation of the island and return to our starting point. After a well-deserved lunch, we’ll head back to La Paz, where we’ll finally be able to shower at the hotel. In the evening, we’ll gather for our final dinner with the entire group and guides to share stories and bid farewell with a toast.

Last Day Breakfast at the hotel. See you on your next adventure!

What makes Espiritu Santo Island unique?

Espiritu Santo was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1995 and is one of several islands that make up the Gulf of California Islands National Park. The Espíritu Santo archipelago is made up of several smaller islands, several of which are important nesting sites for the region's seabirds. When viewed on Google Maps, one can't help but notice the long fjord-like bays that lie deeply sunken into the west coast and provide us with perfect camping beaches. “Los Islotes”, located off the north coast of the island, forms the jewel in the crown, where a magnificent permanent colony of sea lions resides.

What kind of fauna might we observe?

You will be able to observe a wide variety of wildlife, such as: California sea lions, tropical fish, endemic ring-tailed cat (Babisuri), whales (seasonal), dolphins, manta rays, pelicans, blue-footed boobies, ospreys, frigate birds, herons, and egrets.
