The hike to Charco Prieto Waterfall is considered moderate to challenging due to its uneven terrain, river crossings, and sections that require scrambling over rocks and fallen trees. The trail is about 40-60 minutes each way, depending on your pace and fitness level. While no advanced hiking skills are needed, good balance and endurance are helpful, especially after heavy rain when the trail can become muddy and slippery.
Why should I hike with a guide for this trail?
Hiking with a guide ensures a safer and more enjoyable experience, especially since Charco Prieto is a remote and unmarked trail. A guide provides local knowledge, helps navigate tricky areas, and ensures you take the safest route to the waterfall. Plus, guides share insights about the area's history, ecosystem, and wildlife, making the adventure even more rewarding.
What kind of wildlife might I see along the way?
As you hike through the rainforest, you may encounter colorful birds, lizards, and a variety of tropical plants. Listen for the calls of Puerto Rico’s endemic birds, such as the Puerto Rican Tody (San Pedrito) and the Puerto Rican Woodpecker.
