Description

Private Full-Day Guided Multi-Pitch Rock Climbing on Castleton Tower

Standing over 400 feet above Castle Valley, Castleton Tower is one of the most recognizable and celebrated desert towers in the world. This full-day guided trip takes you up the legendary Kor-Ingalls Route—a four-pitch crack system that earned its place among the 50 Classic Climbs of North America. Known for its steep Wingate sandstone walls, perfect splitter cracks, and dramatic summit, Castleton Tower is a must-do for any climber looking to experience desert tower climbing at its finest.

The climb involves sustained crack climbing, chimneys, and wide sections, demanding good movement skills and confidence on the rock. While not overly technical, the route is physical and exposed, requiring a solid base of outdoor climbing experience. For many climbers, this is their first “big” desert tower—and the reward is worth it. Topping out on Castleton provides a sweeping view of the La Sal Mountains, Fisher Towers, and the vast canyon country of Moab.
This is a true all-day adventure, with a strenuous approach hike, four pitches of climbing, and multiple rappels to return to the base. Your guide will provide the technical expertise, route management, and safety oversight needed for success, allowing you to focus on the climbing and the experience of standing on one of the most famous summits in the Southwest.

Duration of Adventure

  1. Approximately 8 Hours
  2. Trip length is highly dependent on crowds and individuals' climbing comfort. Plan for a full day.

Location / Where to Meet

Castleton Tower is located in Castle Valley, about a 40-minute drive from Moab. The approach hike begins from the Castleton campground and climbs steeply up a well-marked but strenuous trail through a desert wash and rocky terrain. The hike typically takes around an hour and gains significant elevation before reaching the base of the tower.
While the approach can be demanding, it adds to the sense of adventure and remoteness. Once at the base, the striking Wingate sandstone walls rise overhead, making it immediately clear why Castleton is considered one of the most iconic desert climbs in the world.
Exact meetup location will be provided by your guide prior to the trip. For planning purposes, here's a link to the general location of the Castleton campground.

FAQs

Do I need prior climbing experience for Castleton Tower?

Yes. Castleton Tower is best suited for climbers with previous outdoor crack climbing experience. While your guide will handle leading and technical systems, comfort with climbing cracks and managing exposure will make the day much more enjoyable.

What route will we climb?

Most guided ascents follow the Kor-Ingalls Route (5.9), one of the 50 Classic Climbs of North America. Depending on experience, conditions, and goals, other classic routes may be possible.

How long is the approach?

The approach hike is about 1 hour and fairly strenuous, with steep sections and loose terrain. Good fitness is important to enjoy the day.

How difficult is the climbing?

The Kor-Ingalls Route is rated 5.9 and involves multiple pitches of crack climbing, including chimney and wide sections. Climbers should be comfortable following trad routes at this grade.

How exposed is this climb?

Very. Castleton Tower provides one of the most dramatic desert summits, with sweeping views in all directions. The exposure is part of the experience and what makes topping out so rewarding.

Which guided multi-pitch climb should I choose?

Here’s how our classic Moab-area multi-pitch climbs compare, from most approachable to most challenging:

  • Looking Glass Arch: A great intro to multi-pitch climbing. This moderate climb tops out on a massive sandstone arch, followed by a thrilling rappel through the span—perfect for beginners or those new to desert towers.
  • Ancient Art: Famous for its wild corkscrew summit. Shorter and less committing than the bigger towers, but with a dramatic and unforgettable finish. A great next step up from Looking Glass.
  • Independence Monument: A historic desert tower in Colorado National Monument. This is a longer, full-day climb with more pitches, offering a mix of history, scenery, and adventure for climbers ready for a bigger objective.
  • Castleton Tower: One of the most iconic desert climbs in the world. More physically demanding and committing than the others, it’s best suited for climbers with prior outdoor experience looking for a true bucket-list achievement.

Where and what time is the meeting location?

Your climbing destination and starting time is determined when you book your trip through our office. Your guide calls you prior to your trip to establish your meeting location and confirm your meeting time.

You should plan on arriving to your meeting location five minutes prior to the start of your trip unless your guide instructs you to meet earlier.

Your guide gives you more detailed directions to your exact meeting location when you talk on the phone.

I have my own harness, helmet, and shoes I want to use. Should I bring and use them?

Please let your guide know prior to the trip. Your guide inspects your gear at the start of the trip to determine if they would rather you use company-provided equipment for the trip.

Do I need previous climbing experience to take a guided outdoor rock climbing trip in Colorado?

There is no climbing experience needed at all. Our guided outdoor rock climbing trips are great for every climber, from the first-timer to the very experienced. Our guides tailor each trip to the needs of the climber and/or group.

What if it rains or the weather is bad?

We reserve the right to cancel for any reason, including rain and hazardous weather conditions. If rain or severe weather is forecasted for your day we will notify you the day before to cancel and reschedule if possible. There is no penalty to you if we cancel your trip due to rain or hazardous weather. You are welcome to a full refund or to reschedule if possible.

My friend or family member wants to climb but I only want to watch. Is that okay?

If you are only along for viewing purposes and do not wish to participate, that is not a problem. If you are planning on having people who wish to “just watch,” please be sure to inform your guide of this before the trip. Climbing guides are responsible for managing the climbing site and everyone who is there, no matter if you are climbing or watching. For this reason, it is important for the guide to know how many people to expect on the trip. It is possible that the guide may ask those “just watching” to complete the Assumption of Risk form prior to setting out on the trip.

Should I tip my guide?

Gratuities are always appreciated, but never required. If you are unsure what to tip, think about what you would tip a waiter. 15-20% of the total trip cost is a good place to start.

How much of the day is spent climbing?

One of the goals for every trip is to get you climbing as soon as possible, meaning most of the day takes place at the climbing site. To start the trip, you meet your guide, get outfitted with gear, then head to the climbing site. Actual climbing time comes down to the size of the group and your willingness to participate. You can maximize your climbing time by completing the Assumption of Risk form for each climber beforehand, and bringing them with you for your guide.

I do not like heights. What if I get scared while climbing?

This is very common. Your guide is more than happy to help you relax and keep going, or lower you if you have reached your limit. Just stop, breathe, relax, and enjoy the scenery around you. Take your time and you’ll feel better.
