Description

Guided Snorkeling Tour at Blue Heron Bridge – Riviera Beach, Florida!

Snorkel the world-famous Blue Heron Bridge, voted one of the best snorkeling spots in the world — and you don't even need a boat to get there! Located just south of Phil Foster Park in Riviera Beach, this iconic shore snorkel trail sits a mere 200 ft (60 m) from the beach, tucked inside the calm, protected waters of the Lake Worth Lagoon. No ocean swells, no boat rides, no complicated logistics — just walk in and start exploring.
The Blue Heron Bridge Snorkel Trail is an 800-ft (240 m) artificial reef system made up of limestone boulders, concrete reef modules, mini wrecks, and even a trio of hammerhead shark sculptures — all draped in coral growth and teeming with life. Water depths along the trail range from 5 to 20 ft (1.5 to 6 m), making it ideal for snorkelers of all experience levels. Because the site sits inside the Lake Worth Lagoon and is shielded from ocean conditions, it remains calm and accessible even when the open ocean is rough.
Your guide from — all of whom are passionate freedivers and freediving instructors — will lead you along the reef trail, pointing out hidden creatures, sharing stories about the site, and teaching you simple breathing and equalization techniques to help you feel more at ease in the water.

FAQs

What marine life can I see when snorkeling at the Blue Heron Bridge?

The Blue Heron Bridge is famous for its extraordinary biodiversity — over 300 species have been recorded here. On a typical tour you may spot parrotfish, spadefish, angelfish, barracuda, moray eels, pipefish, sea robins, flying gurnards, frogfish, nudibranchs, starfish, stingrays, and seahorses. Guests regularly report seeing octopus tucked into rocks and reef crevices. Rarer encounters include green sea turtles, manatees, spotted eagle rays, nurse sharks, and Goliath grouper. The site is widely regarded as a macro photographer's dream, and even the hammerhead shark sculptures on the reef trail are home to colorful coral and fish.

When is the best time to snorkel at the Blue Heron Bridge?

Timing your visit around high tide is essential for the best experience. The ideal window is approximately 1 hour before to 1 hour after high tide. During this period, clear Atlantic Ocean water flows into the lagoon, bringing excellent visibility — sometimes up to 100 feet (30 m). Low tide brings murky water and stronger currents, so entering the water at low tide is not recommended. We schedule all tours around optimal tide windows, so you don't need to worry about this — they handle the timing for you!

Is this a boat tour or a shore snorkel?

This is a shore snorkel. No boat is involved. The reef trail begins just 200 feet (60 m) from shore, and you will enter and exit directly from the sandy beach at Phil Foster Park. This makes it accessible for all levels and eliminates the need for seasickness medication.

Is this beginner-friendly?

Yes! The Blue Heron Bridge is one of the most beginner-friendly snorkel sites in the world, thanks to its calm, protected waters, gradual sandy entry, and shallow depths. Guides take extra care with first-timers, and many guests cite this tour as their very first snorkeling experience. That said, guests must be comfortable swimming at least 200 feet (60 m) with fins. If you are brand new to snorkeling or cannot swim 200 feet, please book the Private Snorkel option so your guide can give you one-on-one attention.

How big are group sizes?

We keep groups intimate — a maximum of 4 guests per guide ensures you receive personalized attention throughout the tour.

Are private tours available?

Yes! When booking the "Private Snorkeler" option, the tour will be limited to your group only. This is also the recommended booking for guests with children under 12 or anyone who would prefer a one-on-one experience.

What are the guide credentials?

Our guides are PADI-certified freediving instructors with deep local knowledge of the Blue Heron Bridge reef system. Co-founders Keke McBride and Farrell Tiller hold credentials including PADI Instructor Trainer, PADI Master SCUBA Instructor, PADI Advanced Freediving Instructor, Emergency First Response Instructor, U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain certifications, and more. The team also includes a guide with a degree in Fisheries and Wildlife (specializing in fish biology) and a PADI Divemaster.

Can I bring a camera?

Yes! A waterproof camera is welcome, and your guides are also skilled underwater photographers who will capture high-quality images and video throughout the tour. A photo package can be added at checkout for an extra fee. The company is not responsible for any damaged or lost items.

Can I snorkel with a mustache or beard?

You can snorkel with a beard or mustache, but facial hair can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before snorkeling. If you'd prefer not to shave, bring petroleum jelly or chapstick — coating your mustache may help create a seal and reduce leaking.

Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?

You can't wear glasses with a snorkel mask, but contacts are totally fine and often the best option for seeing clearly underwater. If you have a prescription mask, feel free to bring it — rental shops typically don't carry them. Fun fact: everything appears about 25% larger and closer underwater, which helps visibility a bit even without correction.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs — the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest. Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as an alternative. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled 'non-nano.' Reef-safe SPF is also available as an add-on at checkout.

What is the minimum number of guests needed to run the tour?

A minimum of 2 participants is required. If the minimum is not met, you will be contacted 24 hours in advance and given the option to rebook, pay a $75 continuation fee to proceed with a smaller group, or cancel for a full refund.
