Wildlife Guidelines
The bioluminescent lagoon at Laguna Grande is a delicate, protected ecosystem. Swimming is prohibited in Laguna Grande per regulations enforced by Puerto Rico's Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) — swimming disturbs sediment and can harm the dinoflagellates. Guides are authorized and regulated by the DRNA, and all guests must follow their instructions.
The bioluminescent intensity depends on natural factors including rain, tide, moon phase, sunlight, water temperature, and other conditions beyond anyone's control. Puerto Rico Eco Tour is not responsible for natural variation in bioluminescent intensity on any given night.
Please do not use flash photography or bright lights in the lagoon — artificial light reduces the visibility of the bioluminescence and disturbs the ecosystem. Keep devices and lights minimized once you reach the open lagoon.
While paddling through the mangrove channel, you may encounter fish, birds, and other local wildlife. Please do not touch, feed, or disturb any animals or plants in the reserve. The mangrove roots and trees are alive — please avoid banging into them with paddles or grabbing onto branches.

FAQs
What is bioluminescence, and why does the water glow?
Bioluminescence in Laguna Grande is caused by microscopic plankton called dinoflagellates (Pyrodinium bahamense). When their water is disturbed — by paddles, hands, or waves — they emit a bright blue-green glow as a defense mechanism. These tiny single-celled organisms exist in enormous concentrations in the lagoon, which is why the glow effect is so vivid. Every stroke of your paddle, every fish swimming past, every splash of your hands will light up in the darkness. It is one of the rarest natural phenomena on Earth, and Laguna Grande in Fajardo is one of only a handful of places on the planet where it occurs.
When is the best time to see the bioluminescence?
The bioluminescent intensity depends on several natural factors that are beyond anyone's control:
- Moon phase — the darkest nights around the new moon produce the most vivid glow. Even a partial moon can significantly reduce visibility. Cloudy overcast nights can also help by blocking moonlight.
- Season — warmer months (summer) typically produce brighter bioluminescence than cooler months (winter), as the dinoflagellates are more active in warmer water.
- Recent rainfall — heavy rain can temporarily dilute the lagoon and reduce the glow.
- Sunlight — hotter, sunnier days tend to correlate with brighter nighttime glow.
If possible, plan your tour around the new moon for the best experience. Even on nights when conditions are not ideal, the bio bay still glows — just with less intensity. The mangrove paddle and stargazing are beautiful on any night.
Can we take pictures of the bioluminescence?
Yes, but capturing it on camera is genuinely challenging. Standard smartphone cameras and DSLRs in auto mode will struggle to photograph the glow — it requires long-exposure settings and ideally a waterproof camera with manual controls. If photography is a priority, research your device's long-exposure or night mode settings before the tour. For most guests, the best approach is to put the camera away once in the lagoon and simply experience the moment — the guides at Laguna Grande often joke that the best camera is your eyes. Do not use a flash, as it significantly reduces the visibility of the glow for everyone on the tour.
Why can't I swim in Laguna Grande?
Swimming is prohibited in Laguna Grande by regulations enforced by Puerto Rico's Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA). Entering the water disturbs sediment, introduces body oils and sunscreen, and can harm the delicate dinoflagellate organisms that create the bioluminescent glow. The ban on swimming, in effect since 2007, has had a measurable positive effect on the health and brightness of the lagoon. Your tour guides are authorized operators under the DRNA — please follow their instructions and respect the regulations to help preserve this rare ecosystem.
Why can't I use DEET insect repellent?
DEET-based repellents and lotions are harmful to the dinoflagellates that create the bioluminescent glow in the lagoon. These chemicals can damage the fragile ecosystem if they enter the water. Tour operators recommend using DEET-free balms or creams instead, and applying them at least 30 minutes before your tour to reduce transfer to the water. Do not apply any repellent once you are at the launch site or on the water.
I've never kayaked before — is this tour appropriate for beginners?
Yes — no prior kayaking experience is required, and a safety and paddling briefing is given before every tour. That said, the tour involves moderate physical activity: paddling 1.5 miles (2.4 km) each way through a mangrove channel, in the dark, in a tandem kayak. First-time kayakers may find it more challenging to steer than they expect, especially in the narrow mangrove sections at night. If you are a first-time paddler, experienced guests recommend booking an earlier departure time (if multiple slots are available) so there is a bit more light during the first portion of the paddle through the channel. The guides are helpful and experienced with all ability levels, and if someone struggles on the return paddle, guides have occasionally assisted exhausted guests.
What happens if I have an odd number in my group?
No single kayaks are available — all kayaks are tandem (2-seater). If your group has an odd number of participants, the single person will be paired with another solo participant from a different group. Minors may not be paired with guides or with guests from other groups — all minors must ride with an adult from their own group in the same kayak.
Cancellation Policy
All sales are final and non-refundable.
