The experience starts on the beach, where your instructor introduces the basics of paddling, wave timing, ocean awareness, and how to stand up on the board. Then it’s time to head into the water. Your instructors stay close throughout the lesson, helping you find waves, improve your technique, and build confidence with every ride. Ages & Requirements
- Minimum age: 10 years old for group lessons. Children 9 years and younger are required to book a private session.
- No prior surfing experience required — this lesson is designed for first-timers and beginners.
- Participants should be comfortable in the water. Swimming ability is not strictly required, though it is highly recommended.
- Group lessons must have two students minimum, and a maximum of five students. In the unlikely event of only one student confirmed into a group lesson, we will try to reschedule that student into another group lesson time slot, or the student can choose to pay an extra fee for a private class instead.

Yes. This school has been Hawaiian-owned and operated since 1998 and is one of the oldest surf schools on Maui. The founder's family has deep roots in Hawaiian surf culture — the family lineage connects directly to King Kalakaua's inner circle, and the school's heritage in He'e Nalu (surfing, "The Sport of Kings") spans generations.
Do I need prior experience to join a group surf lesson?
Not at all — this lesson is designed for first-timers and complete beginners. No experience is necessary. Your instructor will cover everything you need to know on the sand before you enter the water.
What are the waves like for the group lesson?
Lessons take place at a beginner-friendly break south of Lahaina that offers consistent, manageable waves suitable for first-timers and those still building confidence. The waves are forgiving enough to practice on while still giving you the genuine thrill of surfing.
How many people will be in my group?
A maximum of 5 students per instructor. Group lessons require a minimum of 2 students. If you're the only student at the time of your session, the team will offer to reschedule you or upgrade you to a private lesson for an additional fee.
Will I be able to stand up on my first lesson?
Most students stand up and ride waves on their very first lesson! Your instructor's goal is to get you up and riding as many waves as possible. That said, surfing is a skill that takes practice, and every person progresses at their own pace.
What sunscreen should I use?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that harm coral reefs. Please use a reef-safe, mineral-based, non-nano sunscreen. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as an alternative or complement to sunscreen.
Cancellation Policy
Customers will receive a full refund with 48 hours notice of cancellation. Customers will also receive a full refund in case of operator cancellation due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances, such as medical or an emergency with presenting required documents. Contact us via phone or email to inquire about a cancellation/rescheduled reservation. No-shows will be charged the full amount of the scheduled reservation.
