Description
South Bears Ears Mountain Biking Trip - 4-Day Guided Trip
Explore the remote and stunning Cedar Mesa region within the famous Bears Ears National Monument on this four-day guided mountain bike trip. Rich with history and natural beauty, this area was once home to over 10,000 Ancestral Puebloans and features some of the most remarkable archaeological sites and dramatic geology in the Southwest. From ancient cliff dwellings to sprawling desert vistas, you’ll experience an “off the map” adventure cycling through varied terrain, hiking to sacred ruins, and immersing yourself in the cultural and natural wonders of southeastern Utah.
Each day combines scenic dirt-road biking with engaging hikes, including some scrambling to reach cliffside dwellings that tell stories from over a millennium ago. Remote campsites nestled beneath towering pinyon and juniper trees offer peaceful evenings under the stars, while the nearby canyons and mesas provide unforgettable views and a deep sense of connection to the land.
Trip Details
RIDING TYPE | Intermediate
TRIP DURATION | 4-Days
SEASON | April – May / September – October
Itineraries are subject to change due to weather, road conditions, rider safety and other factors which may affect the logistics of the adventure.
- Road Surface: Dirt roads. Hard packed sediment. Sandy sections and some short steep, rocky sections.
- Overall Rating: Biking is introductory, hiking is intermediate due to some scrambling.
- Technical Difficulty: Easy to moderate.
- Physical Difficulty: Moderate, some strenuous climbing.
- Altitude: 4,100 - 6,500 feet
Ages & Requirements
This trip is best suited for riders with a moderate level of fitness who are comfortable with both biking and hiking over multiple days. Daily riding distances range from 13 to 25 miles on dirt roads with some sandy and rocky sections, and include steady climbs as well as flowing descents. Technical biking skills are not required, but participants should be confident riding on unpaved surfaces.
In addition to biking, expect several hikes of 2 to 4 miles, some involving moderate scrambling and exposure on uneven terrain to access cliff dwellings and viewpoints. Participants should be comfortable with sustained physical activity in a remote environment and able to handle occasional short, steep ascents on foot. The support vehicle is available for rest breaks and gear transport, providing flexibility to accommodate individual pacing.
While there’s not a specific minimum age for this trip, it’s important that all participants meet the physical requirements and are confident riding intermediate mountain bike terrain. Because this is a group tour, riders should be able to keep pace and not impact the overall group experience. If you’re considering bringing a younger rider, please include their age and biking experience in your booking request form. We’re happy to assess whether the trip is a good fit or discuss the option of a private tour better suited to your family’s needs.

FAQs
Itinerary
DAY 1
From Moab, Utah we begin by heading south to Cedar Mesa. Our trip starts with a visit to the Edge of the Cedars State Park Museum, which will introduce us to the Native Peoples that used to call Southern Utah home. Here we will get to see ancient artifacts, learn about indigenous cultures and understand how to interact with the dwellings we will visit this week. Once we finish up at the museum, we will hop back into the van and shuttle down to the Cyclone Flat Road for lunch and the beginning of our biking journey. Our ride will take us along a couple of roads as we head to Sheiks Flat, where we start our walk to see the Yellow House Dwelling. Once back to our bikes, we will ride to our camp. Find a great spot as this will be our home for the duration of the trip! TOTAL MILEAGE: 15 miles riding, 2 miles hiking
DAY 2
Today, we will ride out of camp following the roads that will bring us to our hiking destination, the Moon House dwelling. After lunch, we will have a hearty scramble into the canyon, and have the ability to climb up to this ancient structure. This multi room cliff dwelling is so unique a special recreation management area has been created to protect it. This site dates back to 1200 A.D. and is named for the pictographs in one of the rooms that are believed to be of the half and full moon. There is also an interesting white band painted along the walls—what could it possibly signify? After seeing it all we will head out of the canyon to finish our ride back to our camp. TOTAL MILEAGE: 25 miles riding, 3 miles hiking *intermediate hike due to some scrambling and exposure.
DAY 3
After waking up in the sagebrush, we will ride our bikes up to our next hike of the trip; a large cliff dwelling situated way out on a peninsula of rock, overlooking a deeply carved canyon. Even without the dwelling, the Cedar Mesa Sandstone of red and white layers deposited in the Permian period over 200 million years ago is incredible. We leave our bikes to hike along the canyon rim and then begin down through the gently curving sandstone. Arriving at our destination, you can just imagine how it might have been to call this place your home. It is breathtaking. After exploring, we will retrace our steps and bike back to our camp for an evening of star gazing and listening to the yipping of coyotes in the distance. TOTAL MILEAGE: 20 miles riding, 4 miles hiking *intermediate hike due to some scrambling and exposure.
DAY 4
Today we will have the option for some extra credit riding as we head out to Muley Point. From this incredible viewpoint we will look down to the San Juan River and out to Monument Valley and the Valley of the Gods. After eating a yummy lunch we will ride back to the pavement and get ready for our final adventure on dirt. Check your brakes as we get ready to descend the amazing Moki Dugway! On our last descent we will get a few more views into the Valley of the Gods before we finish our adventure. We will load up and shuttle back to Moab to say our goodbyes. TOTAL MILEAGE: 13 miles with an optional 9.5 mile addition.
Packing List
Be sure to bring everything on this list. We have carefully developed this list to ensure your comfort on the tour regardless of the weather. If you are prepared for extreme weather, it is an adventure. If you are not prepared it can be a serious problem. We recommend the layering system, including a wicking or long underwear layer, an insulating layer and a weather barrier for wind and rain. This list reflects that philosophy. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable so be sure to bring all the warm clothing and rain gear listed!
HOW TO PACK: The bulk of your gear and clothing will ride in the Western Spirit support vehicle (preferably in a large duffle bag) and will not be accessible during the day.
For this trip, you will need a riding pack and optional day bag:
Your riding pack may be a hydration pack, but needs to carry 2-3 liters of water, rain gear, other warm clothing, and food for the day. You may be away from camp and the support vehicle all day and need to be self-sufficient.
A small day bag is optional and may be used to store things you’d rather not ride with, but would like to have access to during the day. This day-pack will remain with the support vehicle and may not be accessible, depending on the day.

What's included in the trip price?
The trip price includes food and drinks for the trip, guides, support vehicle, campsites, permits, and any entry fees into national parks and public lands.
Not included are: rental fees (bikes and camping gear), alcoholic beverages, gratuities for your guides, and applicable sales tax. If you would like to bring alcoholic beverages we will store them for you at the appropriate temperature.
Your total tour cost will include your trip fee, appropriate rental fees and applicable sales tax
Are drinks included?
We provide water, coffee, teas, electrolyte drinks, and assorted soft drinks. We cannot provide alcohol. You are welcome to bring your favorite alcoholic beverages and our guides will store them at the appropriate temperature. We’ll keep the beer cold while you’re out riding!
Is food included?
Yes! From lunch on the first day to lunch on the last day, we’ve got healthy and delicious food to fuel your fun. Food is one thing we take pretty seriously and we get rave reviews from our guests.
Our guides are amazing backcountry chefs and will prepare all your meals. All snacks are included. We’re sponsored by Clif Bar, and provide you with plentiful bars, snacks and electrolyte drinks. If you have specific favorite riding snacks, however, please bring them with you.
Can you accommodate my dietary restrictions?
Yes, no problem! We are happy to accommodate dietary restrictions, and we do it frequently. Our guides are masters at making sure everyone is satisfied. Please let us know when you fill out your forms so our guides can accommodate you and your needs. It is good to be specific (e.g., vegetarian but prefer tempeh over tofu) to help the guides with meal planning.
What will the weather be like?
We wish we could tell you exactly, but Mother Nature is quite unpredictable as you may know. Our trips are designed with the best weather in mind, and follow the seasons—desert trips in spring and fall, and mountain trips in the summer. By sticking to our packing list that we’ve designed for you, you’ll be prepared for whatever comes our way (bringing rain gear almost assures it won’t rain, right?).
How many people are on a trip?
Most of our permits allow us to take 13 guests and 2 guides, although many trips are smaller than our maximum allowed. Our Maze permit in Canyonlands National Park is more limited with only 7 guests and 2 guides to maintain the remote wilderness experience.
What type of bikes do you rent? What do I need to know about renting bikes?
For mountain bikes, we use the Specialized Stumpjumper ST 29ers. For road bikes, we use the Specialized Diverge E5 Elite. All our rental bikes come with flat pedals, a helmet, and one water bottle cage. We provide the water bottle and all the bike repair gear.
If you’re renting a bike from us, you do not need to show up early. Please meet at the scheduled time and we will fit you to your rented bike then.
What pedals come on your rental bikes?
All Western Spirit rental bikes come with flat pedals. If you have clipless pedals (e.g., SPD, Crank Brothers, etc.), you’re welcome to bring them along with your shoes. We swap out pedals all the time!
How should I pack my things?
The packing list will tell you how to pack, since it depends on which trip you are on. Overall, we use a 3-bag system:
Camping gear and personal items for camp (gets packed away in the morning and is inaccessible throughout the day), Small daypack (stays in vehicle and is accessible throughout the day, e.g., extra layers, prescription medications, extra snacks, etc.), Hydration pack you wear (all things you readily need, right there on your back). We recommend a 2-liter hydration system (e.g., Camelbak) to carry the things needed during the day (water, snacks, lunch, rain gear, extra layer, sunscreen, camera, etc.), and to easily hydrate without stopping.
Do I need to bring bike repair gear?
Nope! We provide spare tubes (for 26”, 27.5” and 29” wheels), lube, tool kits, and pumps.
Can I bring my own bike and camping gear?
Certainly! If you bring camping gear, please bring a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. We’ll provide everything else you need. Don’t worry about the camp chairs—we bring those too!
Please make sure all your gear is in excellent, working condition before you head out on your trip. If you’re bringing your own bike, please make sure it has been tuned up and is in excellent riding condition before the trip.
Do you rent camping gear?
Yes! We rent tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads. Sleeping bags are thoroughly washed between trips. The following prices are for the whole trip:
2-person tent – $40 Sleeping bag – $35 Sleeping pad – $15 Total $90
Will I be able to take a shower?
We offer solar showers which are a nice way to rinse off and refresh yourself, but it is not enough water to take a full-fledge shower. The showers are not private, so please bring a swimsuit and your own towel. Showers are dependent on water resources, which may be restricted if it’s a hot desert trip. Some campsites have streams and lakes available for swimming. We also recommend wet-wipes to refresh after a fun day on the bike.
When I'm camping, where will I go to the bathroom?
It’s not a glamorous topic, and we know this can be a subject of concern and embarrassment for some. We make it as easy and sanitary as possible! If we’re camping in designated campsites, we use the pit toilets available in the campgrounds. If we’re camping in the backcountry, we obey by the pack-it-in-pack-it-out rule. We set up a portable toilet lovingly called “the groover,” and put it in a private location with a stunning view. We provide a hand wash system for clean up.
What if I'm traveling by myself?
Please join us! We get solo travelers all the time and going on a bike trip is a great way to meet like-minded people. Many of our guests end up as lifelong friends after a Western Spirit trip.
