Description
Avalanche Rescue Course - Salt Lake City
The AIARE Avalanche Rescue or AAA accredited curriculum is a one-day course intended to teach the current best practices in rescue techniques and gear. Taught by highly experienced ski and splitboard guides who are both AIARE providers and AMGA certified, this course ensures you learn from instructors with real-world expertise and teaching experience.
This course is ideal for both new participants looking to learn the basics of companion rescue and returning students seeking to practice advanced rescue scenarios. You’ll gain professional coaching on your skills and receive a rescue card acknowledging your completion. Your instructors will cover everything from companion rescue to multiple burials and evacuation considerations. With hands-on practice in Big & Little Cottonwood Canyons, you’ll leave the day prepared to respond effectively in avalanche situations.
By the end of the course, you should be able to describe what to do if someone is caught in an avalanche, identify and use essential rescue gear, set up realistic practice scenarios, improve your response times, and develop a plan for ongoing skill practice.
Avalanche Rescue Course Learning Outcomes

FAQs
Which avalanche education course should I choose?
Choosing the right avalanche course depends on your background and goals. For a detailed breakdown of which course is right for you, check out our blog:Backcountry Education Guide: Choosing the Right Avalanche Course
Do I need previous avalanche training to take this course?
There are no course prerequisites, but you should be comfortable using your ski/splitboard setup.
What kind of fitness level do I need?
These are full days outside in the winter. The Avalanche Rescue Course is a low-exertion day focused on skills.
Do I need backcountry skiing or splitboarding experience?
Yes. All courses take place in real backcountry terrain, so you need to be comfortable moving on skis or a splitboard in variable conditions.
What if the weather is bad?
Courses run in most winter conditions. Only truly unsafe weather (such as road closures or avalanche warnings that prevent safe access) would delay or reschedule a course.
Do I need to take Avalanche Rescue before AIARE 1?
No. You can take it before or after AIARE 1. Many people return to Rescue multiple times to refresh their skills.
Can I retake Avalanche Rescue if I’ve already done it once?
Absolutely. Rescue skills are perishable, and each time you take the course you’ll get more practice with realistic scenarios and updated best practices.
How often should I refresh my rescue training?
We recommend retaking Avalanche Rescue every year or two, especially if you don’t practice beacon drills regularly.
Can snowboarders take the course?
Yes! Splitboarders are welcome and encouraged to join.
