FAQs

What class of rapids are on the lower Animas River?

You’ll paddle through Class II and III rapids, which are ideal for families, beginners, and anyone looking for fun and excitement without extreme difficulty. Rapids include Smelter, Sawmill, Santa Rita, and Ponderosa.

Do you have a weight limit?

Nope! But if you’re concerned about your health and safety, please consult with your doctor first.

How far in advance do I need to make a reservation?

We recommend planning your trip as far in advance as possible. Without a reservation, we can’t guarantee that we will have the capacity to accommodate your group same-day due to guide and equipment availability

What is the difference between the ¼ day, ½ day, and ¾ day rafting trips?

All three trips run the same exciting Class II and III whitewater sections of the Animas River. The main difference is time on the water:

  • ¼ Day Trip: About 1.5 hours on the water – a quick, splashy adventure perfect for busy schedules.
  • ½ Day Trip: About 3.5 hours on the water – the classic Durango rafting experience with time to enjoy scenery and rapids.
  • ¾ Day Trip: About 4.5 hours on the water – includes extra time to float between rapids and a mid-trip snack.

Do I need prior rafting experience for the Animas River?

No experience is needed. Your professional guide will provide a full safety briefing and paddling instructions before launching, and they’ll be with you every step of the way.

What is the best time of year to raft the Animas River?

Rafting season typically runs late spring through early fall. Water levels are highest in early summer, offering bigger waves, while late summer provides a more mellow ride that’s great for families.
