Description

Private Full-Day Guided Multi-Pitch Rock Climbing on Ancient Art, Fisher Towers

For climbers seeking one of the most unique and exhilarating summits in the desert, our full-day guided climb at Ancient Art delivers a bucket-list experience. This six-hour adventure takes you high into the Fisher Towers to ascend the world-famous Stolen Chimney route, culminating in the dramatic corkscrew summit—one of the most iconic (and improbable-looking) summits in the climbing world.

Ancient Art’s sandstone spires rise like sculptures from the desert floor, and the climb involves multiple pitches of moderate desert trad climbing. Along the way, you’ll experience chimneys, airy traverses, and fun juggy moves, all with excellent protection for a desert tower. While no single move is especially difficult, this is a committing outing that rewards climbers with adventurous spirits. The final corkscrew summit—perched atop a swirling sandstone tower—is an unforgettable moment, offering 360-degree views of the red rock desert and Colorado River corridor.
This trip is best suited for climbers with some outdoor climbing experience or those comfortable with exposure and eager for a challenge. Our expert guides provide the technical instruction, safety oversight, and encouragement to help you reach the top of Moab’s most exciting summit.

Duration of Adventure

Approximately 6 Hours

Trip length is highly dependent on crowds and individuals' climbing comfort.

Location / Where to Meet

Ancient Art is located in the Fisher Towers, about a 30-minute drive northeast of Moab. The approach hike is roughly one mile on a well-maintained trail, followed by a climber’s path that ascends a gully between Ancient Art and Cottontail Tower.
While the Fisher Towers feel remote and otherworldly, the trailhead is easily accessible by standard vehicles. The combination of accessibility and wild desert scenery makes Ancient Art one of the most sought-after climbs in the Moab area.
Exact meetup location will be provided by your guide prior to the trip. For planning purposes, here's a link to the general location of the Fisher Towers National Recreation Trail.

FAQs

Do I need prior climbing experience to join this trip?

Yes, we recommend that participants have some prior outdoor climbing experience or feel comfortable following a guide on multiple pitches. While the Stolen Chimney route is well-protected and moderately graded, it is still a committing climb with significant exposure.

How difficult is the climb?

The Stolen Chimney route is considered a moderate desert trad climb (rated around 5.8). Climbers will encounter chimneys, face climbing, and traverses. While not technically difficult, it does involve multiple pitches, exposure, and the unique corkscrew summit finish.

What makes Ancient Art special compared to other Moab climbs?

Ancient Art is unlike any other climb in the desert. Its corkscrew summit is one of the most photographed climbing objectives in the world. While our half-day climbing trips introduce you to local walls and single-pitch routes, the Ancient Art climb is a full-day, big-objective adventure that rewards climbers with one of the most exciting summits anywhere.

How long is the approach?

The approach to the tower takes about 30–45 minutes on a well-marked trail, followed by a steeper climber’s path to the base.

What happens if there are crowds on the route?

Stolen Chimney is a very popular climb. Your guide will manage timing and strategy to minimize delays, but wait times are sometimes part of the experience. Patience is key—and the reward is absolutely worth it.

Which guided multi-pitch climb should I choose?

Here’s how our classic Moab-area multi-pitch climbs compare, from most approachable to most challenging:

  • Looking Glass Arch: A great intro to multi-pitch climbing. This moderate climb tops out on a massive sandstone arch, followed by a thrilling rappel through the span—perfect for beginners or those new to desert towers.
  • Ancient Art: Famous for its wild corkscrew summit. Shorter and less committing than the bigger towers, but with a dramatic and unforgettable finish. A great next step up from Looking Glass.
  • Independence Monument: A historic desert tower in Colorado National Monument. This is a longer, full-day climb with more pitches, offering a mix of history, scenery, and adventure for climbers ready for a bigger objective.
  • Castleton Tower: One of the most iconic desert climbs in the world. More physically demanding and committing than the others, it’s best suited for climbers with prior outdoor experience looking for a true bucket-list achievement.
