Description

Alcatraz Visit & Guided Bike Tour from Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito

Two of the most compelling things you can do in San Francisco, spread across two days. On day one, the official ferry carries you out to Alcatraz Island for a self-guided audio tour of the famous federal penitentiary — its haunting cellblocks, the five famous escape attempts, and the unobstructed views of the city skyline from a place its inmates could see but never reach. On day two, a guided bike tour takes you from Fisherman's Wharf across the Golden Gate Bridge and down into Sausalito, with a knowledgeable guide bringing the route to life every pedal of the way.

Together, they cover the two iconic landmarks that define San Francisco's waterfront from opposite ends — one the city's most notorious former prison, the other its most celebrated feat of engineering — and they do it at a pace that lets you actually absorb both.

The bike tour follows the waterfront past sea lions, Crissy Field, and Fort Point to the bridge's south tower, then across the "International Orange" span 220 feet (67 m) above the bay. After a long coast downhill into sunny Sausalito, the guided portion ends — and you keep the bike for the rest of the day.

Both standard and electric (pedal-assist) bikes are available for the bike tour. E-bikes make the uphill sections effortless and are highly recommended for riders who don't cycle regularly.

Important scheduling note: The date you book is your Alcatraz date. The bike tour is automatically booked for the following day at 10:00 AM. If you need same-day or different timing, call the shop directly.

FAQs

Do both activities happen on the same day?

This is a two-day package. The date you book is your Alcatraz day. Your guided bike tour is automatically scheduled for the following morning at 10:00 AM.

Can the Alcatraz date or time be changed?

No — Alcatraz ticket dates and times are fixed and cannot be changed. The bike tour day and time can be adjusted depending on availability, so contact the shop as soon as possible if your plans change.

How long should I plan to spend on Alcatraz?

The self-guided audio tour takes most visitors about 2 – 2.5 hours, but you're free to stay as long as you like — ferries return approximately every 30 minutes. Plan for some extra time to explore the grounds, gardens, and views.

Where does the bike tour go and what will I see?

The tour begins at Fisherman's Wharf and follows the waterfront through some of San Francisco's most beautiful stretches. You'll pass sea lions at the piers, the restored wetlands at Crissy Field, and the old Civil War-era military fort at Fort Point before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. After the bridge, you coast 2 miles (3.2 km) downhill into Sausalito, where the guided tour ends and your free time begins.

How far is the bike tour and is it difficult?

The guided route is 8 miles (12.9 km) one way. The terrain is mostly flat to gently rolling, with two notable uphill sections before the bridge. These are manageable for most casual riders and entirely effortless on an e-bike. The tour is rated beginner to intermediate and suits all ages.

How do I get back to San Francisco after the bike tour ends in Sausalito?

Most guests take the Sausalito–Fisherman's Wharf ferry, which carries bikes on board and runs multiple times daily. The ferry ride offers stunning views of the city skyline, Alcatraz, and the bridge. Ferry tickets can be purchased at the shop before Day 2 departure, online, or on the boat. Note: purchase tickets through the app or on the boat rather than at the kiosk to avoid any ticketing confusion.

Will the bike tour run in the rain?

Yes — tours operate rain or shine unless there are dangerous weather conditions. If a cancellation is necessary, you will be notified up to 30 minutes before departure. Ponchos are available for purchase at the shop.
