Alcatraz Visit & Self-Guided Electric Bike Rental — San Francisco Combo

Two of San Francisco's most iconic experiences, packaged together. In the morning, take the official ferry out to Alcatraz Island for a self-guided audio tour of one of America's most infamous prisons — the crumbling cellblocks, the escape-attempt lore, the views of the bay from the yard. Then pick up an electric bike and spend the rest of the day exploring the waterfront and beyond at your own pace.

The e-bike rental comes with a recommended self-guided route that follows one of San Francisco's best cycling corridors: from Fisherman's Wharf along the waterfront past Aquatic Park, Fort Mason, the Marina District, and the Presidio, through Crissy Field to Fort Point at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, and then up and across the bridge itself. Most riders cross the bridge and come back, or continue downhill into Sausalito, where the ferry can bring you and your bike back to the wharf. The e-bike makes the hills effortless — the Presidio climb that would exhaust most casual cyclists is a non-event on a pedal-assist bike.

This is the most flexible of the Alcatraz packages: no fixed group tour departure, no guide to keep pace with. You manage your own time on the island, then collect your bike and go wherever the day takes you.

Important scheduling note: The date you book is your Alcatraz date. Your e-bike rental is typically booked for the same day. If you want to do both on the same day, call the shop directly after booking to confirm the timing — same-day logistics require coordination.

Duration

1. Day 1 (or same-day): Alcatraz Island — approximately 2 – 3 hours on the island; ferries return approximately every 30 minutes so you can stay as long as you like
   
2. E-bike rental — all day (9:00 AM – 7:00 PM); available the same day as Alcatraz or the following day.
   
3. Total self-guided biking distance: 5 – 25 miles (8 – 40 km) depending on your chosen route
   
4. Arrive at the shop at least 15 minutes before your intended ride start for bike fitting and route briefing
   

Location / Where to Meet

Alcatraz: Ferries depart from Pier 33, 2 The Embarcadero, San Francisco, CA 94105. This is operated by the official Alcatraz concessionaire; report to the pier at the time listed on your ticket.

E-bike pickup: 2661 Taylor Street, San Francisco, CA 94133 — located at Fisherman's Wharf, approximately a 10-minute walk from Pier 33.

Restrooms are available at the shop. There are multiple paid parking garages and metered street parking throughout the Fisherman's Wharf area; parking is not validated.

2. Alcatraz Island involves uneven terrain, hills, and stairs; the self-guided audio tour is available in multiple languages
   
3. Children's equipment available for the bike rental including tag-alongs, child seats (front handlebar), bike trailers, and independent kids' bikes; staff will fit you at check-in
   
4. Electric bikes available for ages 13 and older with parental consent
   
5. Guests should be comfortable riding a bike independently

What to Bring / Wear

1. Comfortable, layered clothing — SF weather changes quickly and Alcatraz Island is exposed and often windy; Sausalito (if you ride there) is usually warmer and sunnier. Rear bike racks with bungee cords are included to stow extra layers
   
2. Closed-toe shoes suitable for both walking on uneven terrain (Alcatraz) and pedaling
   
3. Sunglasses and sunscreen
   
4. Small daypack or bag for personal items — useful for both Alcatraz and the bike ride
   
5. Rain jacket or light poncho — both activities run rain or shine
