Description
Exclusive Alaska Bear Viewing & Hiking Experience – Kenai, Alaska
Most Alaska bear tours put you on a platform above the river and hand you a pair of binoculars. This one puts you in the bears' world. From the moment you lift off from Kenai in a bush plane and the coastline of Cook Inlet unfolds below you, you know you're in for something different.
This is a full-day fly-out bear viewing experience in remote coastal Alaska, with bear habitat in the Lake Clark National Park area as your destination. After a scenic bush flight over glaciers, volcanoes, and wild coastline, you'll land and spend the day on foot, walking 1-2+ miles, with a professional guide — exploring beaches, estuaries, and tidal flats where Alaska brown bears fish, forage, and move through the landscape entirely on their own terms. There are no crowds, no platforms, and no crowds waiting in line behind you. Just a small group of 4–8 guests, your guide, and one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife experiences Alaska has to offer.
The terrain here is dynamic and beautiful — soft sandy beaches, lush coastal vegetation, and tidal sloughs fed by the same glacial ecosystems that define the Kenai Peninsula. Bears are observed at a respectful distance, which your guide manages throughout the day. The experience is as much about the place as the animals: the sounds, the scale, and the feeling of being genuinely remote in wild Alaska.

FAQs
Where exactly does the tour take place?
The bear viewing takes place in remote coastal habitat in the Lake Clark National Park area, across Cook Inlet from Kenai. The specific location varies by season — early season trips typically access Wolverine Creek in the Redoubt Bay Critical Habitat Area, while later season trips head to Crescent Lake in Lake Clark National Park. Both locations offer exceptional brown bear viewing in wild, uncrowded settings.
What is the best time of year to see bears on this tour?
The tour operates from mid to late June through mid-October, with two distinct seasonal windows that offer different experiences. Earlier season (mid to late June through August) typically offers views of bears foraging on sedge grasses, clams, and early salmon runs. Later season (late July through mid-October) often features bears feeding heavily on salmon in preparation for winter, which can mean dramatic viewing of bears fishing in rivers and streams. Your guide will always plan the day around current bear activity and conditions.
Are bear sightings guaranteed?
Brown bears are wild animals and sightings can never be 100% guaranteed. That said, your guides are Alaska wilderness professionals who know these habitats intimately and position groups based on current bear activity. The remote coastal areas accessed on this tour are among the most reliable brown bear viewing locations in Alaska, and the vast majority of trips result in multiple close-range sightings. If conditions are significantly unfavorable, the team will discuss options with you.
How close will we get to the bears?
Your guide manages all distances and approaches based on bear behavior and safety. Bears are observed at a respectful distance — close enough for excellent viewing and photography, but always with the animals' wellbeing and the group's safety as the priority. Bears in coastal Alaska are often accustomed to the presence of respectful human observers and may approach quite close on their own terms.
Is this trip good for wildlife photographers?
Yes — this is one of the best bear photography experiences available in Alaska. The small group size, time spent on the ground in actual habitat, and access to remote coastal locations all contribute to exceptional photographic opportunities. A camera with a zoom or telephoto lens is strongly recommended, as bears are always observed at a safe and respectful distance. A dry bag for your camera gear is also advisable given the wet coastal environment.
What terrain should I expect?
The coastal bear habitat involves a mix of soft sandy beaches, tidal flats, muddy estuaries, and lush riparian areas. Footing can be soft, wet, and occasionally slippery. Rubber boots or hip boots are provided when needed. Participants should be comfortable on uneven, variable terrain and prepared for the possibility of small creek or slough crossings.
How much walking is involved?
Expect to walk up to 1–2+ miles during the bear viewing portion of the day. The pace is relaxed and determined by bear activity and group comfort. The farther and more comfortably you're able to walk, the more of the area your guide will be able to show you — but guests of moderate fitness levels participate successfully on every trip.
Aren't bears dangerous? What safety measures are in place?
Alaska brown bears are powerful wild animals that deserve deep respect — but with proper guidance and protocols, viewing them in the field is a safe and transformative experience. Your guide is WFR-certified, trained in bear behavior and bear safety, and carries appropriate safety equipment. All decisions about proximity and movement in the field are made by the guide. Guests are briefed on bear safety protocols before the tour begins and are expected to follow guide instructions at all times.
What is the passenger weight policy for this fly-out tour?
Because this tour involves a bush plane flight, every guest's weight directly affects aircraft safety and balance. You will be asked to provide your accurate current weight — including clothing, footwear, and personal gear — at the time of booking. This information is kept strictly confidential and used solely for flight planning.
Before every flight, the team reviews the full passenger and gear manifest to confirm the load meets certified safety standards. When a group's combined weight is within limits, everyone flies together as scheduled. If the total weight approaches or exceeds limits, adjustments may be required — such as redistributing passengers, reducing gear, or arranging an additional aircraft rotation.
If you are unsure of your exact weight at the time of booking, you may still reserve your spot — just update the team as soon as possible, and no later than 14 days before departure (or immediately if your trip is within two weeks). Providing inaccurate weight information can result in delays, reconfiguration, or additional aircraft costs on the day of travel.
In the rare event that a group's combined weight exceeds the aircraft's allowable limit, an additional aircraft rotation may be required. Current rates are $2,499 per additional rotation for wheeled aircraft and $4,299 per additional rotation for float planes. This cost may be shared among the group or applied to individual bookings depending on the situation. Rates are subject to change — confirm the most current pricing at the time of booking.
Do you have luggage storage?
Yes — secure luggage storage is available at the Seward office at no charge. This is particularly convenient for cruise ship passengers and travelers checking out of their lodging on the day of their tour.
What safety measures are in place for your tours?
All guides hold Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification and are trained in swift water safety and river-specific emergency protocols. Guides carry professional communication equipment and make all route decisions based on current river conditions.
What is your weather policy?
Tours run rain or shine. Alaska weather is part of the experience! If conditions require a trip to be cancelled by the operator for safety reasons, guests receive a full refund of booking payments made. Rescheduling is offered whenever possible, subject to availability.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes — tours fill up quickly during the summer season. Booking as early as possible is strongly recommended to secure your preferred date and departure location.

Weather-related delays, shortened itineraries, interrupted trips, missed trip days, delayed pickups, extended stays, minimum participation issues, or inability to operate according to the planned itinerary are not considered guest cancellations and do not entitle guests to reimbursement, compensation, damages, or payment for outside expenses.
Guests are responsible for expenses arising from delays, interruptions, cancellations, or trip modifications, including lodging, meals, transportation, airline changes, missed connections, gear purchases, travel insurance premiums, and other incidental or consequential expenses.
Travel delays, weather holds, missed connections, minimum participation requirements, and schedule disruptions are inherent risks of travel in Alaska and are risks assumed by the guest.

- Online booking fees, processing fees, TripSafe fees, and other non-refundable third-party charges are non-refundable.
- Refund calculations apply only to booking payments made directly to KBA.
