Description
Aialik Bay Ultimate Overnight Expedition – Guided Kayak Camping in Kenai Fjords National Park
This trip is all-inclusive, fully guided, and truly unforgettable — and once you experience it, it's easy to understand why. The Aialik Bay Ultimate Overnight Expedition takes you deep into the heart of Kenai Fjords National Park for one or more nights of guided kayak camping among tidewater glaciers, calving icebergs, and some of the most dramatic coastal wilderness in Alaska. Everything is taken care of: your guide, all meals freshly prepared in the on-site certified café, all camping gear, all kayaking equipment, and a fully customized float plan built around your group.
The adventure begins with a scenic ~2-hour water taxi ride aboard a private US Coast Guard-inspected 36-foot landing craft from Lowell Point into the fjords, passing Steller sea lion rookeries, tufted and horned puffins, Dall's porpoises, and regularly stopping for humpback whales and orca. Once in Aialik Bay, you'll paddle among the massive Aialik and Holgate glaciers — two of the largest tidewater glaciers in the park — watching immense blocks of ice calve thunderously into the water as harbor seals bob on ice floes just offshore. Black bears are regularly spotted along the forest edges, and the entire fjord coastline is rich with birdlife, waterfalls, and hidden sea caves to explore.
Days on the water cover 8–15 miles (13–24 km) at a comfortable, unhurried pace, with frequent breaks for beach walks, snacks, and photography. Evenings are spent around a campfire or tucked into a warm sleeping bag after a hearty guide-cooked meal, listening to the sound of glacier calving echoing across the water. Trips can be run as a light-and-fast moving camp — exploring new ground each day — or from a comfortable base camp, entirely based on what your group prefers. A brief survey after booking captures your food preferences, kayaking experience, and trip goals so your guide can build the ideal experience for you.

Do I need kayaking or camping experience?
None at all. Your guide handles all logistics — float planning, meal preparation, camp setup, and safety. The trip is fully customized to your group's skill level and preferences, and a brief survey after booking helps the guide plan everything around you.
What glaciers will we see?
The trip explores the Aialik Bay area of Kenai Fjords National Park, home to Aialik Glacier, Holgate Glacier, and the stunning Pederson Lagoon. Both Aialik and Holgate are among the largest tidewater glaciers in the park — expect dramatic calving events, icebergs floating at eye level, and harbor seals hauled out on ice floes directly in front of you.
How far do we paddle each day?
Expect to cover 8–15 miles (13–24 km) per day at a comfortable, leisurely pace with frequent rest breaks, beach walks, and time to explore. Trips are customized — if you want more or less time on the water, let your guide know.
Will we stay in one camp or move each day?
That's entirely up to you and your guide. The trip can be run as a light-and-fast moving camp — exploring new terrain and beaches each day — or from a comfortable fixed base camp. You'll discuss this preference with your guide at the pre-trip meeting.
When do I meet my guide?
All overnight guests must meet their guide the evening before departure. You'll go over your float plan, gear, packing, and any last-minute questions at the front office at a time arranged with your guide. This ensures an early, smooth departure the next day.
Is camping gear provided?
Yes — tents, sleeping bags, bag liners, inflatable sleeping pads, cookware, bug nets, and all necessary camping equipment are provided. If you'd like to bring your own sleeping bag or personal gear, just let your guide know in advance.
Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?
Yes. After booking, you'll receive a survey to capture all dietary restrictions and food preferences. The team prepares food fresh in the certified on-site café and does their best to accommodate everyone. Please communicate any medical or allergy needs clearly.
Do you practice Leave No Trace?
Yes, strictly. Wag bags (human waste disposal bags) are provided and used on all overnight trips to protect the park's pristine beaches and coastline. Campfires are only built in pop-up fire pits. Lightweight stoves are used for cooking. The team follows all National Park guidelines and Leave No Trace principles throughout every expedition.
Can I bring alcohol?
Yes, you're welcome to bring your own alcohol. Please drink responsibly — backcountry conditions can change rapidly, and it's important for everyone in the group to remain safe and aware at all times.
What happens with valuables and my car?
Leave excess cash and valuables secured at your lodging or the office. Bring only what you need in waterproof, unbreakable containers. Bring $40–$50 for any incidental expenses, though you won't need much in the backcountry.
